  • There are so many variations of the clouser minnow, its hard to keep track of them all. One of my favorites though is this sparkle clouser. Especially when I have fish that are super aggressive, looking for shiny and fast moving lures.
    Being tied with all flashabou, this will shimmer and shine in the water, attracting fish from far away. It also moves quite quickly and sinks very quickly as well. Its a great little fly which I have used to catch smallmouth and largemouth bass, barracuda, crappie, redfish, sea trout, striper, and even trout. They were tied with different sized hooks though for each of those species. Also, there are other fish this fly would catch well, just I haven't actually fished for them with it yet.

    love these quick tie flies. I am going to have to try that Solarez, seems the... ummmm... "other brand" :) product I use refuses to always dry without a bit of tackiness.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, yeah I like quick and simple flies as well. Its less depressing when you loose them to a tree. When you spend a half hour tying a complicated fly, its just depressing to loose it.
      So, the bone dry from solarez literally cures in a few seconds man, its so quick. It also cures really really hard, and literally no tackiness. Their other resins do take a little longer to cure. The "thin hard" formula cures in about double the time as bone dry, and will not be tacky. However their flex formula and "thick hard" formula do take quite a while to fully cure, and unless left in the sun for a while, will be a bit tacky. But seriously, the bone dry is the best "head cement" type of curing resin I've ever used. Works really well.

      Any fish that likes flashy flies. I have caught striper, smallmouth and largemouth bass, speckled trout (sea trout) and many other species with it. I am sure they would work really well with barracuda as well. Anything that likes shiny and flashy baits.

      Thanks! The home is good, we have had a few pest problems, the latest is that we had a spider hatch in the house, with 1000's of spiders crawling on us while we slept on the 3rd. We woke up to a horror story! HAHA But, we took a quick shower, and fled to my parents for two nights until Orkan could take care of it. But other than that, its a great place.

  • @GainingDespair
    @GainingDespair 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could you make one of these with the flash towards the opposite direction (long end towards the eye of the hook) I kinda wonder if this would give it a pulse like effect under water while it's moving slow it may stick out and look bushy but on a more moderate retrieve causing the flash to fall over and face the normal direction. I've seen bass fishing stuff (like jigs, or spinner baits) do this causing a more life like movement to the flash.
    I'm mostly just wondering if it will give off more action in the flash.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not seen flies like that necessarily, but maybe it could. I know traditional tenkara flies use this technique with soft hackle...

      @@McFlyAngler are they usable for Crappie and Bream fishing by casting from a boat and reeling them back?

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Conventional fishing rods? Unless you have a super light spinning rod no... these are light. All flies are generally too light for conventional gear. I mean maybe if you tie them super heavy yeah. But that might require large lead dumbbells. They technically are a fly fishing thing not a “lure”.

    • @genesloan3175
      @genesloan3175 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@McFlyAngler hey thanks for that.... Well, when on the boat casting is more with a 12' light panfish rod that typically is swung out over and into a spot where the fish (hopefully) are setting on the beds. So a light-weight "lure" is best to have a slow fall. The Crappie or Bream will usually strike a jig (lure) on the fall.
      Based on your comment, these are typically used in a stream fly casting method? And as I'm sure you figured out, I know nothing about that type fishing. I look at some videos but really don't have a real idea of how to go about it.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok so maybe it would work, but I’m not sure. With fly fishing, you are casting the line, not the lure. The weight is in the line, and the line pulls the fly with it. In conventional, the lure is what’s casted. Now they sell lead dumbbells, and if you get the large ones, you could see it sink quick enough to jig for crappie. Otherwise, the materials make it sink super slow. As for fly fishing use, you could actually use this in a lake. We don’t really “jig” with fly. It’s more of a cast and strip when fishing still water. They make sinking lines as well for fly fishing that get lighter flies down deeper. But never as deep as some go with conventional. It’s more of a site sport. As in you more than likely are gonna fish where you either see fish, or know where they are at. With conventional you can actually find fish while fishing, they can come to you like with bait. I do both, I used to work on the ocean fishing boats in California and in Texas. I would take people out and help them fish on the party boats. I enjoy both kinds of fishing. But I will say, something about catching fish on a fly rod is magical. Lol!

    We've been using "Flash Clousers" i.e. sparkle clousers, to catch speckled trout, i.e. spotted weakfish, in the marshes of Louisiana for about 30 years...

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kyle Moppert yes It's a common fly... We used this for specks in the TX gulf as well. Basically the same thing as a flash Clouser, I called it a "sparkle Clouser" cause the material I used is not actually flashabou, but something sold by fly tiers dungeon that has clear pearl strands mixed with colored tinsel. But basically the same exact thing...

    • @kylemoppert3105
      @kylemoppert3105 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Big Papi they were tiny spiders actually, just thousands of them. Baby spiders.
      We would rather deal with baby spiders than live in an oven of 110 degrees that the inside of the last house was. We're quite happy here still.

      +steve fuhrman what weight rod are you using?

    7-8 and 8-9

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +steve fuhrman oh well what weight dumbells are you tying these Clousers with? I usually can cast these ones I tie pretty well on a 5wt, but do use a 6wt more often with them.
      I don't have any casting tutorial videos, but maybe search on TH-cam for a few that teach some double hauling. You need to get some higher line speeds with heavier flies. You can't cast a Streamer like a dry fly, you want to get the fly moving fast. However don't try to add line speed by just casting harder, doing a proper double haul will allow a relatively smooth and soft cast to give you more speed.
      Also, make sure your using a good WF line. One that can turn over heavier flies. I've purchased a new line recently that I will be testing over a few weeks. I'll do a review and let you know about it. I'm told it will cast big and heavy flies with ease.

    1/36 to 1/24 weight small to x-small

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, like I said, just look up how to double haul. I usually have absolutely no trouble casting a larger weighted clouser than your describing even with a 5wt. And I don't always double haul with it. But look up some info on how to double haul (if your not able to already) and see if you can get the higher line speeds. If all else fails, maybe look into some casting lessons. They helped me tremendously many years ago. I am still not perfect with it, but it did give me a big advantage with casting larger and heavier flies.
