I loved the way The Deep's sexual assault was handled as well. In addition to everything you said, I felt like another show could have written it like, "see, now he's being abused. He's not so bad!" But instead it was more like, "he's part of a system that victimizes him in some ways, but he also makes the choice to participate in that system and victimize others." I think all the members of the Seven are like that, and I appreciate it. It's nuanced without making excuses.
Lane Brown At first when I saw that the scene was going in THAT direction I was worried they were going to use it as a “Karma Got You!” moment which would have been baaaaaaaaaad but once it was all finished, I was glad the tone of the scene wasn’t like that. However, I will feel weird if they never revisit it for him. Annie had to work through her trauma and I think people need to see that it has a lasting effect on men too.
This is a perfect paragraph summarizing that specific pool of people. Also have you noticed how even the A-hole characters hate each other and aren't just A-holes who are hated by morally good characters? I loved that Maeve is selfish but she finds Homelander absolutely abhorrent and finds Translucent to be a creepy pervert who doesn't deserve any kind of reverence. She didn't even care that he was missing and she was the only other person they brought that topic up to about his absence. I love that Butcher is hated by The Boys but they look up to him for initiative when they need to take on the 7. I love that both Annie and Hughie are two young lovebirds who have a naive outlook with 0 resolve. Then get mistreated by pretty much anyone older with a more realistic outlook on life. It's a good contrast. I think this sort of element is missing in a lot of shows and movies nowadays.
When the deep got assaulted i was really worried that it would be a "the foots on the other table now" type thing but they really made it so we understood that he started to finally understand how he has hurt others while he is now dealing with his own trauma from the situation. I think this might be the best ive ever seen assault on an attacker handled
Shannon T I just like that it seems as though they’re going to explore his layers more. I think he’ll stay a villain, but I think it would be cool to explore if he can have some shades of grey. 😂
LadyJenevia I’m skeptical, I think he is rotten to the core. Like saving Butcher wanting to make him suffer. Pushing his son off the roof reminded me of how my cousin in law almost drowned when he was little. He was thrown in to “learn” and almost died, but somehow I wonder if he will learn this is wrong.
Shannon T We haven’t seen the full context of that yet, only the trailer, so I’m waiting to see what he does in season two. At least in the season finale when he meets his son for the first time, the way they’re having him emote was very different from how he’s been for the entire season. It’s really only episode eight where you start to see more typically human emotions, vulnerability, etc. It would be very flat if he doesn’t have more nuance than just being “The Big Bad”.
Shannon T Why it didn’t occur to anyone else sooner to make Aquaman be a badass with ancestry from the Pacific Islands is beyond me. Zack Snyder is a genius because Jason Momoa is a PERFECT Aquaman.
empathy is a learned skill, if it is not taught and experienced at least in some capacity, one can not develope it. but you are right, it is an explanation, no excuse, same with the deep and pretty much everyone
@@kalystaortiz3701 alas they still learn it, they just learn it by themselves, empathy is still their choice in the circumstances they were put in, not natural ocurrence to such circumstances.
@@kalystaortiz3701 kinda, while inate talent for it is varying, that does not change, that it needs practice and vitnissing. Like an amazing artist most likely has a special talent for his chosen craft, said talent only developed further if they actualy engaged in it. Talent only gets you so fare and you need some typ of teatcher and initial exposior to get started.

I am not sure if Homelander has it in him to become a decent human.

Thank you! I have had unintentional online debates, but I agree that Jason Momoa made Aquaman next level cool!
Shannon T Why it didn’t occur to anyone else sooner to make Aquaman be a badass with ancestry from the Pacific Islands is beyond me. Zack Snyder is a genius because Jason Momoa is a PERFECT Aquaman.
LadyJenevia Exactly! That was my point, he made Aquaman the badass of the group. I was attacked by suggesting he wasn’t always the cool one 😂

Homelander is my favorite super hero…and villain. What a great show!!
Fantastic essay. Subbed! 💯
Oh boy, you just wait till you see season 2 :))))))
I already have.
Amazing essay.
Hi where to you get your clips for all of your the boys episodes?
I love the social commentary in The Boys, its so bloody accurate and not in an obnoxious annoying MCU kinda way
