The real world isn’t woke it’s just the cruel reality of capitalism and greed, that’s the villain in this story, not Homelander or butcher, but peoples greedy morals doing whatever they can too ‘boost numbers’ and gain more control and power
I know it's a tv show but if antony starr showed up at my house in his Homelander costume, I'd be sweating bullets talking to him. That's how good he portrays his character.

I wasn’t sure I liked Antony Starr at first, loved homelander but not the actor behind it. Boy was I wrong. S2 finale had his best acting yet, and the mirror scene in herogasm could only be portrayed by him.
If Anthony Star doesn’t get a Emmy well… I never watch the Emmys anyway.
But if he wins, I would pay attention.

The main thing is the casting. They picked the perfect actors for all the characters which takes the show to another level
They also picked very unpopular actors. There was only one main character who actually had a good acting career before the boys, other than that, all of the were practically unknown

I feel that the satire in the boys is super important, i love how blunt it is. The stormfront fan radicalisation scene was incredible, but depressingly realistic.
I found the store clerk scene to be good but a little simplified. Most radicalizations today are not done by ''actual'' Nazis like Stormfront, it's more by conspiracy theorists in general. He might have killed the store clerk because he was an immigrant ''taking his job'', not because of some eugenic plan to promote the Aryan race.
@@acadianalien In the context of the show, Stormfront was not yet revealed or really even seen as a nazi by the general public.
What made it special was the emphasis on echo chambers. It was a 2 minute scene yet it managed to convey the alt right pipeline so well.
People need to overcome the constant paranoia and toxic ideas that are spread online. 1st through touching grass, and then through genuine empathy and forming human connections.

What I love most about butcher is that he is one of the only people in the show who isn’t scared of homelander, the only change that happens with him is that butcher gets pissed when he’s around
And the fact the 2 biggest characters in this show are both faking their accents and doing it seamlessly while acting unhinged and in control at the same time just is perfect display of their acting
Urban's accent definitely isn't seamless - those Kiwi vowels are very prominent throughout. But it kinda works for the character - it makes his past seem more mysterious.

Karl Urban is definitely NOT doing a flawless accent. I am English and I couldn't tell whether he was supposed to be an Englishman or an Austrailian or a Kiwi. His Kiwi accent slips through way too often, at least once in every sentence. It doesn't ruin his performance or anything but it's still kind of distracting.

I'd respectfully argue the show is very much taking a side, which is anti capitalist and corporatism. The satire of virtue signalling isn't having a go at left wing people, it's aimed at corporations that see social causes as nothing but a marketing tool to make more money, while happily supporting the other side of politics.
Vought goes all out with LGBT marketing, but is also bankrolling Ezekiel's church which is very homophobic. The show isn't making fun of a social cause, it's examining how capitalism can co opt it in the goal of making more money. That said, the show itself does have actual good LGBT representation with Maeve, and her sexuality serves way more than too simply act as a satire, hell the show even touches on a real issue within the community, how outing someone can be incredibly harmful and take away their agency
Agreed with all your points. It does lean more left-wing by painting Vought (an evil, money-hungry corporation) as the villain from the first episode.
But I still think it captures the ridiculousness of poorly substantiated discourse between both sides. E.g. anytime there's blowback and/or civil unrest in the show to either side, it's because of information that's been circulated on TV and/or social media. Like clockwork, the side whom the information benefits will use it as "proof" that the other side is wrong, while the other side will just claim it's deepfaked or dismiss it as a fabrication. And as always rallies will devolve into name-calling and violence. I think it's amazing how accurate these scenes are - a truly brilliant satire of modern misinformation.
But yes, agree with you that my wording was a bit dismissive of the clear criticism of capitalism, and I didn't touch on corporations social-jacking important causes for public approval.
There's a lot more that can be said about the show (and I'm sure lots have) - I just couldn't stomach making a 30 minute video haha.

Her character did become illogical to the point she defies the rules stated by the show.
She should be dead, or in any case in a wheelchair.

@@mochi8632 soldier boy's power stripping ability might not instantly remove them, could wear off over a matter of minutes letting Maeve keep her powers long enough to survive the fall. Makes sense as she's one of the strongest supes out there
The thing I REALLY like about the show is that every main character has a strength, flaw, and motive. They're characters which are perfectly written to be flawed people.
The actor that plays Homelander has also stated that he doesn't believe that the character can or should be redeemed, so I think he definitely recognizes the humanity of the character, but also the despotic truth about him.
2:36 one little correction homelander killed the mayor on his own without permission or order, he spied on the meeting and heard the mayor threatening Stilwell with the knowledge of compound V. Which made him feel threatened about being exposed.

It also came at the right time to be adapted. The modern day satire just works so well which is rare whenever a show adapts other media from 20 years ago
My favourite character in this show will always be Hughie, watching someone so blatantly mediocre constantly push in any and every way they can to be and do more whilst also doing what he believes to be good is something I can personally relate to on many levels
Intellectually I can understand this and appreciate it...but it's just his douche bag face and submissiveness of character that just bothers me enough to not want to be invested with his character to much. I guess that just makes me an asshole or something, IDK.

I haven't been this invested in a show since Breaking Bad and the first 4 seasons of GoT. This show is phenomenal. I hope season 4 is absolutely bonkers for all the good reasons.

From a PR and Marketing stand point, they still kill it. If me a viewer will go out of my way to watch the ads they post and see the commenters *all* go with the bit of them being real. Its amazing
I kind of wish more people were talking about what happened to Frenchie in season 3. He got a really bad concussion in ep 1 and went through a very real, yet unspoken, struggle many people with concussions go through.

I have never seem a movie or show that got me that much on edge when a character enters the scene. Literally every single time Homelander is interacting with any other character I have no idea what he is about to do and I can never be sure that him being calm and composed can turn to him lasering someone to death in an instant. There is not a single other character that caused that much tension and suspense for me and I personally believe that Anthony Starr is deserving an award and a lot more roles for it.
The most underrated character in this show has got to be Hughie. He is way better than people give him credit for. He's a shy awkward dude who finds trouble standing up for himself and I relate to that so much. And there are only a small handful of dating relationships in tv that i actually give a shit about and Annie and hughie are one of those.
Anthony Starr is a gem in this show.
this is a great video, but the political satire is less “centrist” and more of a leftist satire of the fake corporate liberalism that you see within companies. its actually a pretty anti capitalist show and has some pretty awesome references, such as M.M taking some inspiration from the Black Panther party.
Yeah it'll gladly display extreme conservatives and right wingers but rarely if at all discusses extremism and violence on the other side. I don't personally have a party I align with but the show's political bias is blatantly on display.

I thought it was interesting when you mentioned how they make Homelander sympathetic/empathetic. I agree but I feel like they did a good job because just as you learn more to him and the humanization of him, you remember the horrible acts he committed like the Flight 32 incident. You know why he’s the way he is and understand why he is the way he is while also having fear and hatred for him. He is THEE BEST written villain in my opinion.
Thx for shouting out Black Noir, who may just be the most important character in all of fiction. I would sell a kidney to see his version of Beverly Hills Cop. Great video and breakdown of the show, I feel like when it comes to superheroes on tv, this and Netflix’s daredevil are at the top of the list.
haha the Beverly Hills Cop reference. And agreed, Daredevil had the same grounded realism, although the later seasons dropped off in a quality a bit quicker than this.

The fact they made Black Noar such a great character with so much emotion, despite the fact he has no face and is mute, it just shows how good of an actor he is, and how well written the show is.
Most actors out there cant express much emotion without their face, and even less can do it without their voice, but robbing Black Noar of both of those, and still having him become such an endearing character is a master stroke.
Right and it was all portrayed by cutesy little cartoon characters. It was sad and weirdly funny at the same time.
Always make me laugh when people say the boys "attacks both sides". Technically it does attack both side of american politics, but that just means its attacking the right in both instances

Mate, you nailed it. This is such a great show…and the reason I got into it is because I hate the super hero genre. I mean, really? Give me a break! The Boys is so gripping because it’s so “real”. Homelander is an amazing character and Antony Starr is incredible.His ability to go from jovial to truly terrifyingly menacing in the space of 2 seconds is outstanding!
You dont even need to hate the superhero genre. I still like the mcu, but damn i do need a breath of fresh air and The Boys, altho still involves supes, is the perfect series to watch.
The Boys is easily on my top 10 best shows, this show was just perfect for me.
They can't have it THIS good forever right? I'm glad we had a good run for three seasons now but I hope season 4 delivers just as well compared to the other three. Also, the spinoff show Gen V is in the works which I'm a little iffy about but we'll see
i’m pretty sure s4 will be the last season, since butcher only has 12 months to live. the ending of s3 also kinda suggests that homelander is done giving a fuck abt trying to look like the good guy, with him murdering that dude in front of a crowd. all they need to do is stick the landing on the 4th season

I will live and die on the hill of Anthony Starr having the best villain performance I've ever seen contending only with Javier Bardem's Anton Chigurh.
I can count on one hand the number of scenes he's in where I don't feel uneasy or that everyone present is in genuine, mortal danger. I wouldn't need all those fingers, either.
This performance is almost matched by Urban doing a role that's by far and away my favourite he's ever done, pipping Dredd by a slight margin.
Between the pair of them I am completely engrossed when they are on the screen but Starr? Man, I couldn't fathom someone would be so goddamn unnerving whenever you see his face.
The last scene with him, Ryan and the killing of the Liberal guy in that Homelander crowd was just perfect.
Anthony Starr is an incredible actor. He was really good in Banshee as well.

This is spot on with the exception of it criticizing Far Left as well as Far Right and the Middle.
The show doesn't really show any 'Left' much like reality there isn't a Far Left to satirize.
The Bi Erasure of Maeve, the Woke Brand Names, etc. that's all criticism of Liberals (Capitalist Centrists) not Leftists.
The only Leftist feeling characters (and this is a stretch) are those people protesting the Extra Judicial killings by Blue Hawk, and the show depicts them unsatirically as a vulnerable marginalized population.
I agree. People say the "woke wok, BLM BLTs etc." were examples of the show making fun of the left, meanwhile everything making fun of the right is thrown in your face over and over to the point where you audibly say, "Alright, I get it!"
It isn't a very equal level of satire.
IMO: it feels like less of cleverly placed satire and more like a bunch of liberal/leftist writers were trying to throw punches at every chance given.

My favourite characters are Frenchie and kimiko. Two genuinely good people.
Its great because it's a social commentary that does not push any concept to the viewers, very refreshing indeed. Plus the lack of filter on the comedic scenes also adds to the show's charm.
Don’t forget Better Call Saul for best shows on tv rn. I can’t choose between that and Succession. But those three are the trifecta rn no doubt.
Homelander has a very similar feeling to Vader, you know that their presence causes fear into anyone around them
I've been reading the comics recently, and while I am enjoying them, its actually crazy how they turned what is essentially an entire book just meant for shock value where every character can be summed up in 1 sentence into an amazing story with well crafted characters and shock value moments that actually feel like they mean something (tho I will say the Godolkin mansion standoff twist from the book shocked me more than any moment from the show yet, I dont know how they'd fit that into the show but I hope they do). It's rare that a show/movie is better than the source material its based on, but The Boys did it, and they did it well.
I started watching this masterpiece of a show after watching the cast read 1* reviews video, and i immediately fell in love with it!
The Boys is what Marvel and DC want to be but don't have the balls for it.

I loved Anthony Starr so much in this I actually watched the entire Banshee series to get me from season 2 to season 3. (Which is also a fantastic show, especially if you love Anthony Starr, which if you're writing on here, you totally do).
My other favorite actor on here right now in a cast filled with amazing actors is Soldier Boy. Now do I like him enough to watch all 40 seasons of Supernatural... I may get desperate enough.
Television shows always go deeper into characters and their development . I liked season 1 and 2 but season 3 felt like the same thing I’ve been watching. Kinda didn’t feel like I was watching something new.
Fair. Some of them stagnated. But I thought Kimiko, MM (and obviously Soldier Boy) all had really strong character arcs in S3.
Honestly, Antony Star as homelander has surpassed the level of Heath Ledger's joker. Mainly due to the fact of longevity and continous story. Overall, the comparison is not fully compatible due to the different nature of 40+ hours of TV plot vs. 3 hours at most of movie plot. Heather Ledger is and always will be fantastic and leading the way in realistic fiction. Homelander grows on that idea while being a completely different character, with the same care and love for the role.

Not a super hero fan but took a look since I'm a Jason Ackles fan. OMG, I love the show. Anthony Starr is incredible. Homelander is awful, hate him and love him at the same time. Just hope we see a lot more Soldier Boy. Can't wait for the new season.
Season 1 is a masterpiece
Season 2 was a bit of a step down which really concerned me, I thought like many shows it would continue to trend down until it sucked, but thankfully I was wrong
Season 3 was thrilling! Maybe not as perfect as the first season, but completely exceeded my expectations and kept it together as a top show out

To say that the propaganda and the virtue signalling are being done by opposing sides is a misunderstanding of the message of the show. Virtue signalling is not an act exercised by the left, but a business venture by the corporations who also pay for the same right wing propaganda to air, both acts in effort to gain more leverage over the layperson.
Agreed, poor choice of wording by me as the in-show virtue signalling is by Vought. They’re playing both sides by piggybacking socially relevant causes. Additionally, Stormfront in S2 manipulating leftwing virtue signalling with the #HeroesSoWhite hashtag to destabilise Homelander in the media. But I think the show does a great job highlighting the lack of trust in media/evidence based on one’s preconceptions. Because even though WE know Starlight and Co are releasing accurate information (I.e when Starlight baits Homelander into threatening her on IG Live), normal people wouldn’t be able to distinguish if THAT, or Vought’s propaganda is the ‘real truth’. Therefore people on either side are just going to flock to the piece of information that already matches their preconceived ideas. And instantly refute the other information. It’s terrifying really.

Bruh I’m right along with you I’ve not watched many of the MCU movies just iron man 1&2 but when I saw this show I was like gtfo I won’t watch it. Then season 3 dropped so I decided to dip my toes in and my god this is exactly what the super hero genre needs. Amazing how brought down to earth the hero complex is.

I'm also not a big superhero guy. My type of shows are usually apocalypse or something along those lines. Hell i watched all 11 seasons of the walking dead and i really enjoyed it. But man, i have to say The Boys has that something that other superhero shows don't have.

The satire for the show is what makes it for me. From the first episode theres jokes about someone else or themslves in every part of the show the action the writing everything. Which is awesome because the show is awesome so all the clever shit on top just makes it that much more awesome
another reason the casting so so good is because they didn't get really big movies stars, Will Smith could've been A Train, Tom Holland could've been Hughie, those actors have talent but they used the cast they had through there skill and not people clicking on it going," hey look, Brie Larson and Chris Pratt are in this."

The LGBTurkey Legs is a comment on how minority identities are commercialised and sold for profit, there are no LGBT satirisations. As for the far left... again, no? The Boys are, by almost every possible measure, a far left guerrilla group, Kimiko is an escaped Communist, but not from any Communist group that actually reflects the modern day reality of leftist movements, the commentary there isn't even about Communism, it's about Authority, the same as the rest of the show. Thematically a huge chunk of the show is about how power is inherently corruptible and as such any attempt to claim power for change will only result in becoming part of the system of oppression that you're fighting to begin with.

A massive thing you got wrong here. The show is not neutral and it doesn't make fun of every side. It makes fun of conservatives and virtue signalling liberals (liberals are not leftists) who don't actually care about the issues they talk about. They also criticise the rich and talk about how powerful corporations. They even say explicity that the goverment manufactured the war on drugs to marganalise ethnic minorities. The third season was all about toxic masculity and the second was about radicalisation. The show does not criticise leftists, and constantly uses leftist arguments. The show has a very left leaning and anarchistic message (the boys are anarchists pretty much) all the way through.

Yeah as soon as I finished the vid I regretted not covering MM haha. His S3 arc was one of the best things about the show.
