What a satisfying crunching sound to the ears! Those old maple trees put roots out like some sea-monster off of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Ive seen them as big around as my leg (and Im a sizable hossy)! I have had a ripper that had somewhat of a cutting edge alone the entirety of the shank that helped. I've seen some folks that bolt a cutting edge along the side of the shank - and even one who welded a piece of angle-iron across the face of it to form an angle. But as long as you can catch it at an angle, then your shank will cut into it anyway. By the way, your right front tire looks a little on the low side. Thanks for sharing, Ben👍🏻

I haven't seen a ripper in use, been thinking that it might be nice to have one, now I know I need one! I prefer the 3pt connection you put on it over the pins too, nice workmanship. This was my first video of yours and I think I heard you say students helped build the ripper... if so, thank you for sharing your knowledge with the younger generation! TIM from Canada.. watching your video here and I see you’re ripping out roots with your new route pick … suggestions… when you were going ahead.. and you feel your hook on the root…. adjust your pick. when you feel like grabbing. lift up and drive away at the same time.. you might need to do this two or three times. as you feel that hooking. Drive away and adjust your hooks as you were pulling away. Just search gestation doesn’t mean a lot but I like someone always… A little bit of help is good too much help is bad..
Hey Ben, how about a small holesaw and an extention and attach that to a cordless drill and drill some holes at an angle down at the bottom of the stump. The fill the hole with gun powder and use a few long wires to from each hole to connect to long leads going to an electronic fence charger and blow that stump out of the ground

I did use diff lock some but it’s uncomfortable trying to hold that pedal and twist around to see the ripper at the same time. I normally just would hit the brake on whatever wheel spun to shift pulling power to the opposite side. Thanks for watching and for the compliments!
I used a Miller 252 mig, part of it was done with dual shield wire and some with solid wire. The Miller 252 is one of the best mig welders out there. Thanks
Where are you folks? Are you going to make more of these to sell? Sure looks sturdier than the Tractor Supply types. Agree with other posters I'd like to see a longer shank but thats for subsoiling, not just busting roots.
We are in southwest Virginia, Dickenson County. If it had a longer shank it wouldn’t clear the ground, it only has about 4” of clearance raised up now. Thanks

Tremendous job, K&H. I have to do the exact same thing in an area I cleared a year or so ago to make a food plot. The entire area is laden with loblolly pines and gum tree roots. I just haven't gotten off my duff to do anything yet. I bought a sub-soiler which is a version of the ripper tool you made. I hope my tractor is strong enough to break through roots. i have a 60hp Massey and it does not seem as stout as your massive Kubota. What hp is that Kubota beast? Enjoyed a full-watch. You have a very nice tractor and the ripper looks great but you would have spent a whole lot less time using a backhoe and you could have removed the whole stump and all the big roots then passed through with your ripper to clean up any leftover roots. Another option would be to have built a stump bucket instead of a ripper. Just ideas for the future.
It’s already like that plenty thick, it’s not breaking. Plenty of curl to hook under roots too. I was lifting to break the roots but some were close to 8” in diameter and the pump would bypass when I tried it on them. Thanks for watching!
Try taking chainsaw run it down in middle about 2ft. Put lighter fluid in it to top let sat for 2 days then light if fluid has sunk in that way it will burn from inside out for me this work great
I agree it would help some, but have you ever put an edge in 1” thick plate? It’s labor intensive when all you have to use is a torch and grinder. I don’t think it would have helped enough to justify the extra labor unless this was something being used on a daily basis. Thanks for watching!

We thought about tannerite but the house is about too close for that.

Install the front bucket, load it with a half ton or so of dirt, and you'll be amazed at the difference of what you're tractor will pull.

Your diff lock pedal is your friend, would've had a much easier time if you were using it more IMO. Good vid though.

Why not sharpen the leading edge of that ripper instead of being flat? Seems like it would cut through the roots a little bit easier
