I posted a comment some 4 years ago, but I come back here from time to time, it is so fresh a score, giving some kind of "pastoral" peace to our soul. On a more technical point, polytonality is indeed here (as often in Milhaud's works, with a tonal underground), but it is by no ways aggressive and sounds "quasi-consonant". Roussel's language, for instance, sounds usually more harsh.

Thank you very much for all that you do to help promote fine music, and for providing this gorgeous work for us to enjoy. It is so important that classical music be listened to and shared in order for more people to get to know and love it, and your posting it on here greatly helps that to happen.

Polytonality is so cool, its a shame that nearly 100 years later we still hardly hear it in any modern day music.

@@lorenzopone869 Anyway, the poly-tonality here is all but aggressive, and in spite of many comments including from the composer himself, this poly-tonality is always very close to tonality and can be herd as long appogiaturas or decorative features. We can find similar techniques in a quite different mood and context in Debussy or Stravinsky's scores, and also in Ravel after WW1, or even in some "advances" scores by Prokofiev (symphony 2), and even Albert Roussel or Britten. .

Milhaud uses an section of woodwinds without bass. The piano bears the harmonic structure of the whole, so Milhaud can play freely with the tunes of the flute, the oboe, the clarinet. The resullt is quite fresh, with some touch of pastoral mood. Like his friend Poulenc, Milhaud loved the acid sonority of the woodwinds instruments. Nevertheless, he was a violonist and gave us masterworks for strings (sonatas, conceertos ....). I must confrssrhet I love this sonata.

So I think this is amazing, but why are they playing the triplets as if they were an eighth and two sixteenths? I can't imaging the performers not being able to execute a triplet. Was Darius known for revising his scores, hence maybe there are different versions of the same score? In my score, the opening theme in the obe is a triplet and it repeats itself as another triplet in the fourth measure...just curious if anyone knows. Excellent performance though I would say.
