These pieces have stayed with me throughout my life, definitive chamber music, light, fluttering, beautiful, expressive

Here is a work of Milhaud which is among his most known (at least when I was jounger). It is obviously a masterwork. Milhaud was violonist, but like his friend Poulenc, he loved the acid sonority of woodwinds. The polytonality does not appear at all as artificial here, but only as a way to underline the melodic lines. The score is fresh and optimistic; "La cheminée du roi René" must be understood by 'the travel of king René'. 'Cheminer' has the same origin as 'chemin' in old French, which means 'path'.

He called his autobiography "My Happy Life". This piece seems to prove he meant it.

I had never heard of the composer :) I was looking for Good King René... and I end here. A chance meeting, indeed! The music is wonderful.

Shame Classical in the conventional sense (basically everything sake for cinematic classical which I do love tbh despite what purists of the genre will say, just wasn't as relevant after WW2) didn't last long enough to see Funk and Soul influenced composers. Much prefer those genres to Jazz although I verymuch love this piece (although tbf The Jazz Influence doesn't really stick out to me). I guess you could argue Progressive Rock was that to a degree but nonetheless.

This quintet must be one of the 20th century woodwind quitents. I love this quintet!

I don't recall when I first heard this piece, but loved it immediately. Some years later after my son was born I had enrolled in a film class. He was 3 at the time and I decided to make a film about him at 3 and to use parts of this as background music. This was 46 years ago. A great piece, and beautifully played here - great control and balance thoughout. Time for our quintet to dust this one off again, methinks!

Although he wasn't much found of Ravel's music, they have their similar moments.I think it is because of their interest in old french music. Particularly the melodies are really striking.

This is probably the most conventionally pleasant Modernist Composer I've heard other than The Australians. I love the creepy shit too but that's not a bad thing either. Really sinks into your soul on this one.
