Pat, this is the best breakdown of the bottom turn my man. You rip and your style is sick, surfing since I was six, now 30 and like yourself perfecting it everyday, the feeling of a really good bottom turn is best feeling in the world. Keep it up and I will do my home work. 🤙🙌🇦🇺
I was trying hard to fix technical issues on my frontside top turns only to realize that I had created some bad habits on my bottom turn that was making it hard for my body to uncoil during my top turns. Now that I have been focusing hard on my bottom turns with these techniques, my top turn feels "unlocked". Thank you.
@DadiusPrime I’m 💯 with you brother. Same here 😅 I kept trying to kill my top turns and on some small waves o even lost speed. Thanks to this video and your comment. Proof is in the pudding. I CANT WAIT TO START PRACTICING THE BOTTOM TURN THAT I TOOK FOR GRANTED ALL MY LIFE 🤦🏻♂️
Currently rehabbing an ACL reconstruction, and losing my mind not being able to paddle out. Your advice, attitude, and stoke are helping me to not feel like I'm losing all of my progress. Thanks for always being a positive force in the scene.
@maxreediii STAY POSITIVE MY MAN!!! WHAT SEEMS FOREVER! WILL ONLY BE A BLUR LATER IN LIFE!!! I’ve blew out my ACL & MCL while Performing an Ariel Maneuver. I was depressed and sad in those moments. All my life I’ve been an athlete and for once it was like someone clipped my wings and I couldn’t fly no more. I told myself I would never surf again. Specially because Surfing is what did it. I was wrong man! I came back stronger and quicker than ever. Throwing Airs On Hydro Foils With Top Speed. Take Rehab Seriously. YOULL BE BACK IN NO TIME. ALOHA BROTHER
I took the bottom turn for granted all my life man 🤦🏻♂️ I’m in my 40s still Ripping it up!!! But damn! Some thing that came natural to us! Never ever put thought into it!!! It’s so crazy that you will never stop being a student in life 💯. Shit! I can’t wait to work on bottom turns!!! And I would always jump on a wave a kill the shit out of it and with a long board I would do those long laying cruiser faded take offs. Never would have thought to chill more on my short board. Center my feet positions. Then go for the kill. Damn! I’m so stoked!!! Put me in the game coach!!!! I can’t wait bro. Mad Aloha Cheeeee 🤙🏽 🌎🏄🏽♂️
I hi mate,I surfed for ripcurl as part of the seach team right through the nineties, always stayed with Frankie ,on the sth coast of Durban ,spent a week surfing with Tom while there, was so inspirational surfing with him, you've nailed everything you said in this vlog,my surfing improved dramatically, just surfing with him, also managed to get one of his 6'10 pipe boards of him ,shaped by Greg Clough..love your work mate..
Hi from Aus! Best frontside bottom turn tutorial I’ve seen. I have much more trouble on frontside than backside strangely. Especially getting back up the wave without bogging the rail. Some coaches say to use back foot pressure while others say focus on twisting and unweighting the board. I’m curious know what you mean by the mini surfboard over the fins which is a nice explanation and definitely how Tom is doing it. When you make the mini surfboard are you saying that the arm should be in line with the fins? So towards the back of the board? Or should you be reaching towards the front of the board with the mini surfboard arm. Love that you used Tom Curren as the template . One of those turns in your clip was unreal. He’s pure class.
Bit late for the reply, but yes he's saying keep it in a way that is centering your weight distribution more towards the fins and the inside rail. While decompressing and twisting is equally important, you don't really want to use that same slow jump-like motion that you do while doing sharp, stally bottom turns or pump up the face, but to keep as much weight on your front foot to engage the rail but to keep the front hand back, down low and planted out towards the wave. This way, you'll have your rail AND fins fully engaged, lots of stability and drive (and style!).
Hey Pat Happy I have seen this video Thanks for sharing your knowledge This is gold And it makes me happy to watch tutoriel from good surfers I have exactly the same vision It’s kind reassuring 😅
This was incredible. This is the most thoughtful legit "how to" I've seen. So many surfers cant/ dont do solid bottom turns. Did your channel make more of these?
@@alohavisuals yeah this is the most useful bottom turn tutorial I've ever watched. If you could get Pat to do backside bottom turn that would be incredible.
Thanks so much! That was super insightful and helpful. Can't wait to get out in the water and try. You've also changed the way I'll watch surf videos from now on. Yew!
Thanks pat Great tips I find sometimes my bottom turn feels really good and i get insane turns But other times i feel like i use too kuch front foot.. it really comes down to speed Sometimes when i have a good face but not enough speed i tend to try to "skate" instead of use the rail.. No substitute for speed in surfing But ill try this The most important thing i found is really keeping your back foot way back Every inch makes a huge difference in that regard
Awesome content and tips! Please do one on blowtail revs and how/when to get the freakin front foot to move forward. I cannot for the life of me scrape it up and always end up too far back. I always seem to miss that split second of weightlessness to move it in... 😵🔥
So good! Thanks for this great insight, there countless little nuggets of wisdom here.. You've got great style, I can see loads of Curran in your surfing just smooth and powerful flow with a solid rail game. The best kind of surfing to watch all day for me. Thanks again!
“Stand up and take a second to breath and assess….” Hahahaha! The beach break I surf gives you exactly ZERO seconds to “assess” anything. If you are not up and racing down the line like a mad man, you will simply be left with a wall of water crashing down on your head. 🤷♂️

Rock on!
Andy Irons, Rob Machado keep there front arm relaxed down by the knee pretty much all the way through a turn..Style/flow/balance...
I fr keep coming back to this video

The fate of your ride depends on your first turn and in some cases the best part of your ride.
This is ridiculous. World record best How To or something
Shitty waves, check. That's my signature. Let's see how this goes.
