    Kale! Thanks for getting us these videos in such crazy times we're living in!! Being a natural footer, going left is very awkward for me, but I want to get better at it. Your tutorial is SICK, best tips and in depth explanations on TH-cam.
    The one tidbit I personally observed in both Filipe's and Johanne's surfing is that when they have fully torqued their backside bottom turn, before they snap the turn at the lip, they lift their leading arm from down to UP really fast. They almost whip the arm. I think this really helps to get those insane backside hacks they are known for. Just my thoughts on it.
    Can't wait to use this in the surf this week, yew!

    • @KalesBroccoli
      @KalesBroccoli  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes for sure!! I describe it to clients almost like a punch down with the leading arm to really generate the torque! Thanks champ!

    In my experience the most difficult part is bend the knees properly and do the perfect chair position.
    I have always seeing myself turning perfectly my shoulders against the lip but my body straight as a stick and my board pointing the beach ha ha ha .
    Congrats for this video. Spot on.

    Thanks Kale,
    You’ve done it again, another excellent surf training video tutorial !!.
    It compliments your “Which Surf Skate is Better?” episode.
    Definitely the smoothstar training is fast tracking our surf foundation for improvement. The penny is certainly dropping!!
    Whilst I love surfing,, I know that I will never catch as many waves to improve as quickly as I can, than with the correct training, using the smoothstar.
    I have no affiliation with smoothstar & was skeptical that I could ever ride any sort of skateboard.
    Now I love it and surfskate with my son & daughter on the flat ground, along with training on quarter pipes
    You have given us plenty to work on but would love any more smoothstar training. Possibly some turns on a half or quarter pipe would also be wonderful.
    Cheers, Happy Days, Thanks🤙🏄🏿‍♂️

    Thanks for your video pretty helpful!

  • @doublestrokeroll
    @doublestrokeroll 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    As soon as I was good enough to catch waves out the back, I always preferred going backside. Even now that I've improved my front side surfing, backside still feels more "natural" for me. With backside I could just get up to the high line much easier. It took me a much longer time to get up the wave face front side, and I'm still better at it back than front. (goofy foot)
    I think it comes from growing up skateboarding ramps and bowls. For me personally I instinctively prefer facing the way I might fall. So facing down the ramp seeing the concrete rather than having my back to the ground. It's the same surfing. Going front side means I can't see where I will fall and that makes it more difficult.
    I spent a lot of time working on front side and now I'm really enjoying it but it sounds like my experience is opposite to most. Interesting.

    Toledo has a very dramatic "windshield wiper" movement on his backhand, much like Dane. The left arms sweeps a ton over the range of motion from 270 degrees to 90 degrees, beginnign with that external rotation you mention. Yours is much more truncated, Kale. Of course, Toledo was surfing bigger waves that were much more lined-up while you were surfing beach break. Excellent video.

    I live in France and I've been watching your videos for only a month and I already have the feeling that I've made huge progress on my surfing. Especially thanks to surf skate practicing :)
    I've noticed that Johanne and Filipe tend to almost completely stretch their leading leg at the beginning of their turns. I tried doing that along the opening shoulder thing and I noticed it helped me backside pumping as well as backside truning. Is that a good or a bad thing to do ?

    Great tips, have been working on this on a smooth Star for a few months, I found I made a big jump in the speed I carried up to the lip when I got my weight distribution right for my bottom turn, I’ve always had too much on the front foot. When practicing on the smooth Star I find I get the weight distribution right when my back foot is over the trucks rather than all the way back and I push by back knee in towards my front... not sure why, but otherwise I seem to end up practicing overloading my front foot when I skate. Cheers for the vid

    • @markoconnell6679
      @markoconnell6679 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe a way to visualise it would be to imagine you're stood with your arms by your sides thumbs pointing forwards and pinkies back. Externally rotating would move you thumbs away from your body and your pinkies towards the body leaving your palms facing forward. Hope that helps

    Great clip, Kale. I noticed Johanne straightened her front leg on the bottom turn. Other pros like Freddy Patachia do this as well. Is there an advantage for doing that other than for shifting the weight onto the back foot and style? I also noticed that they don't do it on every single bottom turns, only for some. Is there a certain section where you can do that vs others where you don't?

    • @KalesBroccoli
      @KalesBroccoli  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For lip line turns generally the bottom turn is more extended as you’re not trying to explode on the lip but just maintain speed in order to project with it

    Kale, how do you gauge how aggressively to turn/cut-back on the top-side turn backside? I just got comfortable with the mechanics of the backside bottom turn and some of the top turn (still working on it), but I have a hard time knowing how far ahead of the break/peak I am. What cues do you look for, and what adjustments do you make for each of them?
    Thanks for all the videos so far, they've been instrumental in my progression.

    Hey Kale! Maybe you can help here. I am goofy for everything, even for sliding with my socks on a slippery floor or sliding trying to reach a short shot during a tennis match . But I've been surfing for 3/4 years and always poped up regular and it actually feels good and got to a solid intermediate level, but it feels like now that I need to move more my board , maybe surfing goofy would be better. Even practicing with a smoothstar doesn't help cause I'm 100% goofy there. Any thoughts??

    I've been surfing since I was a kid but I've always been dogshit at surfing backside. If I was rated 5/10 surfing forehand, I'd be a 2/10 backside. Thing is I'm goofy and all except one of my local spots are either left-handers or peaky beach-breaks with lots of lefts and rights, and since there's lelss competition for the lefts I've had almost no motivation to get better at back-hand. The hardest part of going backside for me isn't even the bottom turn, its keeping my shoulder open to the face of the wave as I pop up. If the wave is soft and crumbly I can take my time and get going gradually but when it's a faster wave I'm so slow to project down the line that it's closed out on me before I even bottom turn. So frustrating. Ideally I'd go practice at the nearest wave pool but last time I tried surfing one backside it just felt like a waste of 50 bucks because I'd only manage to surf the full wave a couple of times, plus it's emabarassing as hell to have surfed for as long as I have and then to repeatedly miss waves in front of a crowd of people lol

    Left after left and not worry about a crowd. You just described surfing in Samoa.
