Hey! I think I underestimated the difference the paper makes so this has been really helpful. I'm just starting out and I wanted to practice on more affordable paper to get the practice and muscle memory.
Deniz I’ve used affordable and the most expensive and I PROMISE that’s not the supply to be cheap about. Because you can’t compare the results. And I’m pretty frugal usually
Hi 👋 The best tip for me is about the cotton watercolor paper it is not as frustrating for me to work with. I struggled so much with the other papers not blending, hard lines no matter what, the heavy warping of paper . When I switched it was more enjoyable to work with and made me paint more . Thanks for the tips.
Yes! Supplies are very important! This video is very timely for me. Just last night, I was working on a small watercolor project. It wasn't going as well as I'd like, so I was irritated. My husband asked what paper I was using. I told him it was some lesser quality paper I bought eons ago but hate to throw away. He told me I should use good paper from now on because practicing on cheap paper is really a waste of time and effort. He's right, but I'm still in the mindset I was in when I was young and we had very little money and all I could afford was the cheap supplies. I keep thinking I'm not good enough yet to use expensive paper. But, I know I'll get infinitely more enjoyment and quality practice out of my painting if I use good paper. But, as they say, it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks!
I'm in the same boat as you. Im having a hard time spending the mi ey on good paper for practice... even though I spent the money to upgrade a lot of paints
I bought good paper and good brushes and I have bought a few really good paints and will add to my colors with good quality paints as needed or as I can budget them in.
I hear you! Those supplies can be expensive, but the catch is... to make the leap in quality of supplies will also leap your skills and practice! All the best, Peggy! ❤️❤️
I make all those mistakes but I am working on them. Question, what is the best way to load your brush ie: rolling, dabbing and how wet should the paints be?
My favorite thing is that you have a video on WATER CONTROL! Everyone talks about it. Not many videos on it. Very helpful. Most helpful, controlling puddling and what the end result of puddling looks like. Thank you. Off to view water control.
My biggest mistake was not stopping, letting it dry and then trying to add layers or detail later. I'd fiddle away trying to do it all at once, and end up with a brown mess on my page. It took me 25 years to pick up watercolours and try again. I'm very glad I did 😊
Thank you very much for incredible videos, you are an awesome artist and teacher. I used to do a lot of watercolor but I stopped like 20 years ago, and now I am trying to get back “on the horse”. However, even though I am using professional grade paints and paper my struggle is with the consistency of the paint. I just can’t get smooth washes and smooth transitions, and sometimes the brush is too dry. I guess just need to practice. Thanks again!
I took your advice on paper, brushes and paints and you prove to be correct. I love the brushes and paints. I haven't gotten the paper yet, but I will! Thanks Jenna! :)
Aw shit. The giving up to soon was like a personal attack hahaha! It hit too close to home. Excellent advice, thank you so much for sharing your expertise!
You just are so funny! And I'm glad to see that you have a cat that eats your art, too! My Maine Coon is ridiculous about eating paper! I wish I was still in school so I could not take my homework in and tell the teacher that my cat ate it!🤣🤣🤣 Seriously, this was a very helpful video. I think I do all these things. Shame on me!
Ugghh getting so frustrating with the water control. But I had to laugh anyway because I'm totally doing everything you warned us about. Just bought your first book and heading to your water control video right now. Thanks so much.
I just started watercoloring and I hate to admit it , but I’m guilty of doing almost all of these!! Thanks so much for this video, it really helped me out!
It's okay, Lili!!! We've all been there! If you watch my recent desert landscape tutorial, I ended up with some hard lines that I didn't want and had to fix it! Happens to all of us. 😉
You have converted me to loose painting but sometimes to get a decent composition I need to sketch a little first. I'm having trouble hiding the pencil lines - please could you advise on the best pencil to use, HB? H? 92B?!? I've tried a water soluble crayon but can't erase it during the sketching process. Thank you as always for this video :)

Hi! I use watercolor from tubes. I have my colors in the small wells in palettes, so they dry between uses. I would love a whole lesson on how to use your palette. How to moisten the paints without using too much water. Then, where and how to mix the colors. Should I put my mixing brush back in the pure color well to get more? Or clean the brush first? Wastes paint, and then the brush is too wet. I just don’t know how to use the palette! Thanks for considering this idea for a lesson! I love your videos. Thank you so much!!!🙏
Thanks for the feedback, Barbara! The more you watch my videos, you should be able to catch here and there how I mix and use my palette. Thanks for your love and support! ❤️❤️
Hello friend from Canada! I am so glad you found my channel and I hope it continues to help you in your watercolor/art journey!! Have a good one! ❤️❤️❤️
So I have to ask... what startled you when you dropped the tube of paint? Into coffee in that mug? I am so excited I just discovered you! I am a newbie (that means interest and watching tutorials rather than putting paint to paper) and actually have watched several videos back to back.
I struggle so much with knowing when my brush has too much water or not enough. I typically don't know until its too late. I know I need to get better paper, it dries way too fast and I really struggle with not working quickly enough.
The paper will help a ton, and of course, (I know it's annoying to hear) but it'll get more and more natural the more you paint. Practice, practice! Enjoy the process! ❤️❤️
@@JennaRaineyChannel I keep telling myself once I get better I'll upgrade. But honestly arches isn't that bad and if I'm using it for a gift for someone else its very worth it. Thanks for commenting back!

Have you tested Bee paper? It's supposed to be a cheat cotton one. I was tricked into buying a "richer in cotton" paper that ended up being way too expensive for 100% cellulose and I had to use it because I had already invested in it... But I will make sure I get 100% cotton next time.
It's such a common issue, Christine, so you're definitely not alone! I hope this video and my others help you get the hang of getting just the right amount of water for what you're painting! Thanks for watching! ❤️
my problem is that i am too gross motor and therefore mostly paint such abstract minimalist pictures, i would like to be able to paint details. That's why I use a brush on a mat that turns black on contact with water and movements when drawing with pencils with a graphics tablet on the PC so I don't use any materials for my motor exercises.
I hear you, it can be so frustrating! Please keep with it, you can do it! It just takes a lot of practice and patience and getting muscle memory for strokes and what not.
