I had a 283 in a 62 station wagon. I spent many nights backed up to the beach in Malibu. I even saw a few celebrities jogging the shoreline. Ahh... the memories of my youth. This 383 you bought should last until there's no more dinosaur blood left on earth. By then we'll lubricate everything with melted Soylent Green.
I don't blame you for going the crate motor route Jimmy. Brand new block, heads and internal components with a warranty. It sure makes sense to me. With that 383 you better add some grab handles for the wife because I got a feeling she'll be hanging on for dear life!
Haha, very true! Looking into crate engines for a couple weeks before deciding on this one. Once I saw splayed 4 bolt mains, steel crank and hypertectic pistons at 10:1 compression and a rumpety roller cam, made the leap. I'll do something with the 350 too, but in less of a rush.
383 stroker! Great choice! I knew it Jimmy. Don't blame you for ordering it complete. Oh and it will be pedal to the metal for a little bit. Great video and You're awesome!
Hello Jimmy, With all of the negative situations that have arisen with the project truck, your attitude has always been a positive one. It’s refreshing to see! PS- it’s considered animal cruelty to have over 400HP and not exercise them regularly.
Haha, thanks very much DJ, we will have some fun with it! Hope the trans lives until the 18 month no interest payments pass for the next phase. We'll see.
Feel the frustration in your voice, but keep rowing we are all with you.......start saving for a new gearbox you are going to use all that power who wouldn't 😊
James and I always enjoy a Sunday visit with you and the project truck Jimmy. Have a great Sunday and hope your week starts off great as well! Oh and no, you won't be able to resist! Start looking for a transmission!
Burnouts first! Then the TKX swap... That motor in a 69 Nova and 3.73 gears going 12.0's. They used to require their break in oil for the warranty. Don't know if that's still a thing or not.
Your new engine sounds like a great fit for your truck. Hope the install goes super smoothly for you Jimmy. You don't need anymore unexpected surprises.
I reckon you've made a really good choice with that 383 Jimmy! Is there a good option for a gearbox that'll stay together with that engine? I love torque and acceleration more than peaky power and top speed so I'd be running it hard from 2,000 to 4,000 rpm myself in 2nd and 3rd. How far over the speed limit would you be at 4,000 in 3rd?
Yeah, my trans goes my credit card gets final casualty mode. It’ll be for a Tremec TKX I believe it’s called. Handles 600 ft lbs. but $2800. :/ With the 4:10 gears about 70 in 3rd with two more gears to go!
Jimmy your project truck really turned out to be a project truck, but it looks like you’re all in that smile ear to ear when you unveiled that motor says it all.
Love the project truck videos. Great choice for the crate engine, I've had nothing but good luck with the blueprint engines. Can't wait for the installation video. Keep up the great videos.
Man I'm excited to share that with everyone! Stop by any night, just remember the traffic is horrendous here going south on John Young in the afternoon. Takes about a half hour to go 4 or 5 miles sometimes. lol
Jimmy- Enjoy the channel. I am not a mechanic but find your videos interesting. Maybe you did but why as a mechanic didn't you check out the old engine? Any tips you have learned in buying a classic truck might make a good video. Enjoy the truck videos! Thanks
I have the engine I removed at the machine shop, but since they are super busy they aren't great about returning calls or answering emails so far. It's been 3 weeks, so I ordered this engine to move along with the project. I'll also build the other engine and video that, when that will happen is anybody's guess so far. It will be a mild build, but we will go over the assembly in a couple of videos. :) Thank you very much!
Hold back! Jimmy, hold back and not hear and feel it pull🤔, no I don’t see that happening. Not that I could hold back, so make sure you have the camera with you on the first burn out. We want to see it! Great prep video
Outstand Project truck video. The new engine is going to be great, It looks Beautiful! Just got back from the big Spring Carlisle, PA swap meet, I was there for a week. Time to catch up on all of your videos. Hope you had a great weekend Jimmy. Going down to NC on Tuesday to get my Dart!!
Jimmy think positive my friend that you won’t kill the transmission on your truck if you haft to drive in the brake down lane or have your wife drive it and you sit in the passenger side seat and enjoy the view love you buddy awesome truck and see you tomorrow in the shop ps don’t forget your lunch tomorrow morning have great weekend see you Monday
Jimmy, great choice for a healthy small block. In regards to the transmission, I have a 1963 Chevy C10 that I built a 400 HP 350 for. My truck came with a very weak Muncie 319 transmission, which is a three speed with overdrive. I ran the truck hard for over 25 years with numerous burnouts and launches. As you know, these trucks do not transfer weight due to the super long trailing arms so the tires would basically spin for as long as my foot was in the gas. What also helped was the truck does not have a posi-traction rear either. Finally two years ago, I broke the synchro drum doing a speed shift from second to third gear at high rpm. I actually had a spare transmission and installed it because I love the overdrive and even the column shifter. To summarize, your transmission will likely take the power ok, but speed shifts could be the killer for the future. Love the channel and the C10.
Nice motor...time for a M-20 or M-22. Because you know you're going to be stomping on that loud pedal, as Clay Millican would say. Good luck with the new motor 👍
Yeah, I’ve rebuilt quite a few over the years. But to do it right nowadays cost the same as buying new done with a warranty. I could do it cheaply and have a decent result. But I’m not usually able to cheap out on engine parts. :)
Jimmy, I am so jealous! What a smart move to buy that setup! I can’t wait until you fire her up? I know you can’t either! I built a 383 and had it balanced and blueprinted, and put it in a 78 Cutlass! I had a ton of money in it! I am sure you saved a lot of money buying it like you did? How much was that engine? Great stuff Jimmy!!!
That is awesome Mitch! It was $6099 at Summit and included free shipping and $500 in Summit bucks/credit. They are price controlled so they are the only ones giving an added credit if bought thru them. Also no interest 18 month financing so left the money in the bank where it belongs. Until the trans pops, haha.
Awesome project truck video! In my opinion, go ahead and enjoy doing burnouts to see how long the transmission holds up. Consider it a purposely designed weak point.
Yeah, I prefer the Carter based carbs for customers vehicles for sure, but for my own the Holley will be fine. Of course however it goes it will all be documented. :)
Jimmy you already said you bought the 383 because you like the way it is going to sound. So no you are not going to be able to stay out of it. I have a 383 I built 20 yrs ago in my 79' Caprice. It's very close to the same power numbers you have and I destroyed 2nd gear in a built TH350 3 times! HAHA. Really looking forward to seeing the stroker go in the truck. I have a mild 350 in the 64' C10 and it sounds so good through side exhaust and I am never able to stay out of it!
Hmmm , how not to put the power down .. I guess it will depend on the road surface..if it hooks up more. Wider rear tires will find the weak links. I wouldn’t be able to hold back.. heck I hold first gear in my Mark VI till 40 mph 😁
Sweet motor Jimmy! Just one question. I see you are using the high standards of NASA’s precision measuring units of ‘just a hair’ when you were locating your engine mounts. How are you able to get your ‘just a hair’ calibrated when you don’t have any ‘just a hairs’? 😊
As I dug into the engine things got worse. So went with a crate engine from Blueprint engines. About three videos ago, all on the main page for the channel. :)
I probably would have done this with a bare block. But what worries me is you ordered a 2 piece main seal engine? Or a one piece rear seal? Because the one, will need an adapter. Which will totally mess up your measurements.
It is a 1 piece rear main and I just got the steel flywheel for it, along with the other items that are different. Since it's externally balanced balancer and flywheel.
If you catch the price difference when still in the store they gotta give you the price on the tag verses the price on the receipt..if that makes any sense...
You stole my comment! When you first started talking about the new engine, my first thought was "oh no" will the tranny be able to handle it? But as always, the Master had already thought about it. Great video!
Fun project ! Be interesting to see what machine shop has found on 'old' engine !!
Keep On Truckin'.......
..
More to come! Thanks

Thanks very much Marty! We will have some fun in the next few videos!
I had a lock smith working for me awhile back and he told me they use concrete bits for drilling out safes and they also work great on truck frames.
Hello Jimmy,
With all of the negative situations that have arisen with the project truck, your attitude has always been a positive one. It’s refreshing to see!
PS- it’s considered animal cruelty to have over 400HP and not exercise them regularly.

Beautiful engine Jimmy ! I don't blame you for going that route, you've battled long enough. One and Done. 👍
Yes, thanks Wally! We'll likely do the other engine also, just in a more relaxed time frame.
Feel the frustration in your voice, but keep rowing we are all with you.......start saving for a new gearbox you are going to use all that power who wouldn't 😊
Working on it! Haha
Thank you my friend!
Jimmy is the man!
I learned about serpentine belts and tensioners today. Thanks Jimmy👍
You bet, thank you!

The paper work said they recommend it, but I didn't see a requirement. I got Royal Purple conventional 10w30 break in oil.
Your new engine sounds like a great fit for your truck. Hope the install goes super smoothly for you Jimmy. You don't need anymore unexpected surprises.
Man it's been a wild ride, but now it will be the fun version of one! ;)
Thanks very much!

Glad to hear that! :)

Thanks! Glad to hear that...Will do!
Woohooo! A sleeper! 😊
Oh yes! ;)
Love it Jimmy, can't wait to hear it run and see it drive again.May have to stop by one evening with some adult beverages!😮
Man I'm excited to share that with everyone!
Stop by any night, just remember the traffic is horrendous here going south on John Young in the afternoon. Takes about a half hour to go 4 or 5 miles sometimes. lol
@JimmyMakingitwork traffic is a disaster on that side of town. Osceola county has grown way to fast.

Getting my 94 f150 ready. Summer is here I want to drive too. Rebuilt engine 302, fluids in, battary on charge. Fingers crossed
Oh man that is the nerve racking yet most fun part! First start! Get some oil pressure before firing it up! Always a good idea.
Jimmy my knees are already starting to hurt, how about we grab a coffee and take 5. We are both not as young as we use to be.
Oh man I hear that my friend!
Hold back! Jimmy, hold back and not hear and feel it pull🤔, no I don’t see that happening. Not that I could hold back, so make sure you have the camera with you on the first burn out. We want to see it! Great prep video
Exactly!! Haha we will get some videos from this process for sure!
your going to enjoy that engine with out worries Jimmy, then its car show time again with a happy wife .
Man I’m looking forward to a trouble free cruise my friend!

That is great info Rick, thanks! We will see how it goes!
Hi Jimmy, That is one sweeeet engine. I am looking forward to a few burnouts🤣 I hope the transmission holds up.
You and me both! Thanks Eddie!
Nice motor...time for a M-20 or M-22. Because you know you're going to be stomping on that loud pedal, as Clay Millican would say. Good luck with the new motor 👍
You got that right! Whatever replaces it if needed will have overdrive because of the trucks 4:10 rear gears.
Ayee Jimmmay! I’d be sending that truck until there was a puddle of gear oil and broken pieces under it.
Haha, might be predicting my future brother!
Looking good Jimmy
Thank you James!
Thanks Jimmy 😊
Thank you!
he's got the tool cart a new long block but what's really important is the Dunkin donut coffee
Haha nailed it again OB!
Your going to do what every car guy does when the motor is done and running that is a burn out , never seen anyone that hasn't. 😂
Haha, it will be hard to resist. I will at least put some miles on it first though. ;)
the last engine I rebuilt was a 283 for my 66 chevy Impala in 1993,, now I just buy long blocks
Yeah, I’ve rebuilt quite a few over the years. But to do it right nowadays cost the same as buying new done with a warranty.
I could do it cheaply and have a decent result. But I’m not usually able to cheap out on engine parts. :)

Haha, thanks Mike! Gotta have a weak link right!
Farm truck with a stroker motor. You have to put on some slicks and see if you can pull the front off the ground ha ha
Haha maybe we will do that, once the bills are caught up for the next adventure. ;)
I know some people that hate Holley carbs with a deep passion and will not use them.Find them finicky to tune being picky

Yeah ive been thinking about the hoses. MY credit card is near completely melted though. We will see. :)

Use that extra horsepower only when necessary and the drive train should be good. I imagine that the rear tires will break loose quite easily.
Yeah that’s what I’m hoping. Gonna try and be easy on it for a bit during break in for sure. Then we’ll see. ;)
Did I miss where he put the new heads on? I assume it didn't work but didn't see the video showing how it ran with new heads/ pushrods etc
