      I did some work for the Hydra Car project and saw it in its unesembled form. I was later invited to attend the inaugural launch of the craft. These images you are seeing here, are of it in the water on that day. Of all the custom projects I have had the privilege to have been associated with, this one left me speechless to see it in motion on and off land. Keep building outside the box Rick.

    6:16 That's not a sub it's 3 seater Sea Scooter. A submarine protects its users from water pressurisation and carnivorous sea life. This thing will make a nice meal for a hungry school of sharks or make and anchor out of its users if it loses power.

    Very interesting presentation. The Lockheed "Tail Sitter" was the XFV, and only ever flew as a conventional aircraft with an ungainly bolted-on landing gear. The one with stubby delta wings shown taking off vertically was its competitor, the Convair XFY "Pogo." Great piece of rare footage, nonetheless!

    The Surface Orbiter and Sea Ranger, looks like they were inspired by the Landmaster featured in the motion picture, "Damnation Alley." Damnation Alley is a motion picture before my time but is well worth seeing this classic. The vehicle featured in the film was a fully functioning vehicle that operated as it was described in the motion picture. Damnation Alley is a 1977 film. The special effects were extremely good for the time. The reason it is seldom heard of is because it was dwarfed by Star Wars, A New Hope.

    • @tracylemme1375
      @tracylemme1375 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have slight firsthand knowledge of both vehicles you speed of. As a young ma, I was working at my dad’s welding shop when a man came in and asked if we would please remove the American flag on the flag pole in front of the shop. For 3 or4 days they filmed parts of Damnation Alley at the wrecking yard next door and in front of the shop. I still have yet to see such a neat wheel arrangement.
      In the early 90’s while enjoying a few drinks at an open air bar in Georgetown Exuma The Bahamas, I saw the Surface Orbiter as it stopped by for supplies on an around the world trip.

      @@tracylemme1375 Wow! That is incredible! It is amazing that someone else has had exposure to these amazing vehicles and knows what I referenced. Damnation Alley would have been an enormous movie if it were released two years prior to New Hope.

    I get the impression the real reason a practical flying car is still yet to appear isn't really the engineering per-se (although that's not exactly easy either), it's the paperwork.
    To drive one you'd need; A driver's license, a pilot's license, road insurance, aircraft insurance, annual airworthyness certification, and once it's over 3 years old it needs a road worthyness certificate annually too, then add tax.

    Movie Star potential! My favorite is #1!

  • @pylon500
    @pylon500 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    #13 is actually two aircraft.
    The featured aircraft, the Lockheed XFV-1 shown on the ground never achieved vertical flight, but flew only from the wheels depicted.
    The footage of a flying vehicle, is of the Convair XFY-1 'Pogo' which started all flights from a vertical take off and finished with a vertical landing.
    A third 'tail-sitter' aircraft aimed at the same (later abandoned) military requirement, but not shown here, was the Ryan X-13 Vertijet, which also achieved vertical take-offs and landings.
    A little research goes a long way...

    The #5 inflato plane thingy was all so supposed to be packaged for dropping to downed pilots in remote areas . It could be air dropped in a crate with CO2 bottles for inflations but only it could be used where at there was a clear flat place for take offs. A nifty idea but unrealistic for acshully using.

    The tanker style would be the best for ruggedness since it starts with a solid hull and structure. Ever thought about a 'foilborne' operation for the water portion of the craft? The foils of these type of craft have advanced a great deal since this vehicle was first conceived. The propulsion system would need to be possibly re-configured on the side of how it is directed into the water.
    This type of change is not as difficult as one might think, the hardest part of the shape, design, and configuration of the hull has already been 'sea tested' so to speak.
    Let me know if further development is going to be done with this equipment

    Many of the flight pictures in the vid are of the Convair XFY-1 "Pogo Stick" aircraft which was in parallel development with the Lockheed XFV-1. The Convair ship had a delta planform and the Lockheed ship had about the same wing planform as the F-104 Starfighter. Whatever which ship was involved and whatever the terminology; the entire program was a failure due to the reasons stated at the end of the video despite spending quite a chunk of change for the prototypes. More careers were ruined/ended working in VTO than SSTO [Single Stage To Orbit].

    The dobbertin surface orbiter was very cool. It was built in my home town and I saw its maiden voyage, among other test runs. The mission never went. He traveled around the caribbean, around the northern countries of south america and then around the US. He never really had a plan or a way to fund the around the world trip. They came back home after 2-3 years, sick of each other and divorced. Too bad, cool vehicle. The same builder's yellow Hydrocar was a dud. There are a ton of high speed land and water amphibious vehicles out there; this was not one of them. The video says 60 mph water. Never happened. There are a few other youtube videos of its test drives. Way too heavy and way too inefficient propulsion system (surface drive). The thing could not get up on plane. I think Rick envisioned it getting up on those sponsons and charging down the river at 60, but it didnt have the speed to get up on them. He gave up and tried to sell it as a novelty. Video says someone bought it for $60,000.

    one Innovative vehicle that was missed is the Maral autogyro. this clever vehicle uses a drive shaft similar to wanting a weedeater to power its main rotor from 2 cylinder Cushman Motor I believe... with a throw of the lever it can hover in wind speeds of like 12 knots. underneath is slung a container that serves as a water landing bloat and A Cargo Bay all at the same time! with dog latches on the door it seals weather-tight and Carries up to 14 sheets of plywood. not sure of its range but it's manufactured in Germany so if you look it up they no speaky English...

      He sure did give it his best shot. We all saw the cable and realize it never flew. Mullers creation was still worth including and a good one for discussion purposes. Thanks for the feedback.

      The Moller flying saucer is right up there with the Avro company's flying disk: Great ideas that barely got off the ground.
