I've lived in many UK towns and cities and I have to say that Birmingham is the best drinking town of the lot... Amazing bars, great beers, good prices, and generally friendly and welcoming
The back story to the Old Contemptibles is interesting. At the start of WW1 a group of soldiers met there before boarding the trains at Snow Hill starion to go to the front line. They vowed to meet there after the war was over and the survivors did just that. The regiment was nicknamed The Old Contemptibles and the brewery adopted the name for the pub in their honour.
Some great pubs but the Old Royal , around the corner from the Old Contemptibles, and the Prince of Wales by the Rep theatre were sadly missed. The two cats at the Wellington have both been rehoused by one of the barmaids .
Before the Wellington was a pub it was a bistro/wine bar, but it was closed down because of a problem with mice. When it openned as the Wellington the first pub-cats were 'employed' as mousers. Because they weren't allowed to sell food, they allowed you to bring your own and used to provide plates and cutlery.
You did a great job in covering so many places in one go... Don't know how you stayed the distance... I'd recommend you try the Davenports Queens Head, behind the Law Courts next time
Sad to hear that the grand old Victorian pub,The Crown, on Corporation street (near the law courts) has been closed down. For goodness sake, somebody please step in and save it.
Coming from Birmingham, I don’t normally drink in the City centre but when I do it’s the Wellington for me, every time I go they have different ciders there. Not a beer drinker anymore but cider 🍺 wow! Great video!! KRO 💪🏼FEA
I enjoyed that. As a brummie living in Brisbane since 2009 it was a walk down memory lane. Bacchus bar and old joint stock were my faves. Met my wife in the walkabout😂😂
New to the channel getting through them swiftly. Not sure if you have done or plan to do Moseley at some point. Would recommend the ‘Prince of Wales’, ‘Cuban Embassy formally Bulls Head & ‘Fighting Cocks’ 👍
A&B is a Brum staple, many a night ending on the decking outside (when it’s not Maccies on the ramp)…so looking forward to the JQ. Also, shout out to the Flapper
Haha, I've literally just finished the Facebook post and reviews by writing 'Jewellery Quarter Up Next' - definitely one I'm looking forward to doing soon mate
I'm in Birmingham tomorrow. Thanks for recommending the Bacchus Bar. Had no idea it existed, but it looks very decadent and wonderfully over-the-top. I'll pop in for a pint.
We rely on recommendations on our facebook page for where to go (make sure you're following that) and sadly, not one person recommended that, whereas there were at least 40 others in total that had multiple recommendations.
We always put out on Facebook where we are off to and ask for suggestions etc... sadly, in over 100 people giving us recommendations, that wasn't even mentioned once, whereas most of what we did here was suggested lots of times.

Thanks Mark, this is now my favorite video! Hahaha Just like my mates. Cheers
In the Troc every Friday night back in the 90s. Used to have a wicked jukebox...

Old Contemptibles IS a sister pub to Bacchus. Both are Nicholson's pubs as are the 2 Shakespeare pubs in the city centre. 👍🏻🍻
Bin in most of those over the years. OCs was a regular haunt in the late 80s. The Craven Arms not far from the Mailbox is a cracking boozer. 😉👍🍻
Used the old contemptibles back in the 70's. Glad to see they've got rid of the fishing nets and lobster pot bouys that used to grace the walls
The other Shakespeare (Inn) on Summer Row is a really beautiful Victorian pub.
The joint stock was the stock exchange in Birmingham & if you leave through the back door you can walk straight into the Wellington
You should do a crawl around Kings Heath and Stirchley, loads of great places to drink.
We'll get there mate
@@thegreatbritishpubcrawl Moseley and Harborne, too.

Wellington is good but Black Country Ales forced them to rehome their two mascots (cats) called Malt and Hops. Lots of people weren’t happy

Thanks mate. I'll be doing The Jewellery Quarter of the city centre very soon too!
Craddocks brewery based in Stourbridge where you'll find loads of cracking pubs and micro pubs
Nice video

Sorry if you've been already. But the jolly sailor in Hemmington near Castle Donnington is wealth a visit.

Great wine list in Bacchus too. Not cheap though.
@@71bernieboyRose Villa Taver and Brown Lion Have to be on the list
Ha h a brilliant, been in quite a few of these but look better on camera.
Fellas you missed The Head of Steam, Temple St…please return it’s best of the lot! Massive selection of world beers.
We didn't mate... it's in the video and on the Facebook review... (20 mins in)
Head of Steam is in the video
Does anyone know the song being played in scruffy Murphys? It's driving me mad!
Whats been the worst pubs u been to in a city or town
I think Corby or Redditch have to be the worst places so far
As a Mockney living in Black Country the prime benefit living here is a easy train up to Birmingham for a great night.
I think Mark's mistake was starting with the Belgian stuff. If you can't drink much you want to work up to that stuff
Wolves has some excellent pubs mate 👌 👏 👍
Back in Wolves next month mate
I'm from Wolverhampton pls name them?...😂
Posada , Great Western, The Albert, Billy Wright 👏, The Lych Gate , all worth a visit also The Giffard, all good Wolves pubs
Sorry, did i see a pint for £27 in tilt? 🤯
I think you did... haha
Not always. There are always idiots that look for trouble.
Can't believe you missed the Victoria

love that pub one of my faves with bacchus
Victoria is the best pub in Brum. Serious omission.

Not anymore it isn’t, steadily going down for years, it’s a beautiful building but a bit of a dump now
