Turns out my main problem with not being able to use the pen tool as flexibly as I need is the fact that I didn't know Rubber Band option should be on, and Snapping's off. Oh and using ALT to break the line and create a sharp point. Thank you SO much for this video!
Heyo, just blew in after a certain leading company set itself on fire. Really grateful for your tutorials, they're awesome! I'm loving Affinity so far:)
I had no idea about the versatility of the pen tool. Only watched to find out how to draw whiskers and learned so much more. Great vid. This will save me so much time.
That was super useful Ally - I have yet to fully master the pen tool at times! The Alt to break the curve is something I forget so easily. Thanks Ally. :)
Thank you so much! Moving from adobe it has been hard as some things are the same but most things aren't, your content helps me bridge the gap! Thanks again :)
Thank you so much for your amazing videos! They are so easy to follow and have helped me learn Affinity Designer so much. I really appreciate your time and effort.
Thanks for a great video! I stumbled upon a shortcut for changing direction with the pen tool. I don't use the Alt/Option key at all. Here's what I do: I draw my first line, either straight or curved. Let go of the mouse button. Click on the square or circle where my first line just ended. From there, if I want a straight line, I move the cursor to the next point, click and release. If I want a curve, I move the cursor to the next point, click and drag. This works for me on Win10 with AD version 2.2.1. I haven't tried this on the Mac yet.
There's another cute cat video that shows this plus the ctrl or command key to edit nodes without switching tools. But this cat is cuter and the video shows how to make a drawing with a break between visible lines (top of the head), which is stylistically nice.
6:09 isn't there some snap-to-line while drawing, or modifier, or post-line feature where you can multi-mode select and have them line up to nearest line? that would be great!
Is there an Auto-trace Tool? or can you Darken the contrast, Make a magic selection and then color Fill the selection. to retain more of the ink pens natural character?
This was fabulous! Thank you! I did it and was able to create a cat very close to yours. Any chance you know how to do the ALT trick to break the line and create a sharp point while working on the ipad?
Not for a design like my cat, but if your design is made of closed shapes, then you can give those shapes a fill color without needing to trace them again.
Thanks for your comment! I'm trying to figure out what the best sw is for me and now that you mention it, auto trace would save me so much time over thousands of projects, that this is probably a deal breaker for me where Affinity is concerned
There many software dedicate only to autotrace, I don’t see why not having it inside Affinity should be such a deal breaker. A nuisance maybe, but a minor one.
I know the Pen Tool can be tricky, but at least you get to work with a cute little cat! 🤗
It is loving the way the communicating thank y😊ou
are you just using the mouse to use the pen tool ?
I'll probably have to watch this a couple times. Thank you for sharing. I am brand new to Affinity Designer and Publisher

Ally is the BEST!!!!!!!!
That's so nice of you! Thank you! 🤗
This is so cool 😎
Another very good demonstration.. Thank you.
Thanks so much! 😊
How many people here think its about time Affinity Designer developed an image to vector tracing function, like illustrator?
Yes, I desperately need this. Adobe has it.
Adobe has had this feature for decades, I'm amazed Affinity doesn't.
Inkscape (free) has a good one. However, the vector lines are too complex to edit as freely as lines you draw yourself.
Defo. It’s driving me mad.
Thank youu so much Ali!!
You're welcome! I'm glad you liked the video! 😊
Thank’s heaps 😊
You're welcome! Glad you liked the video. 😊
What's alt/option when you're using the iPad version?
I think you need a keyboard for that
Why not use a brush to trace in lieu of the pen tool?
You can use the brush if you prefer that 😊

Any way to reuse the traces of the cat instead of having to retrace over your previous traces in order to make the fill?
Not for a design like my cat, but if your design is made of closed shapes, then you can give those shapes a fill color without needing to trace them again.
You are the best
Aww, thank you! 🤗
thanks
You're welcome! 😊
great
Thank you! 😊
I wonder how to trace the image without outline.
I mean, like template layer in illustrator.
🎉
Thank you Kevin! :)
Comments about the lack of Auto-trace in Affinity Designer are coming in 3... 2... 1...
Haha so true! 😅
