@@fmlazar it apparently works really well on M1 chips, and the compatibility falls from there, but, it's still really impressive that it exists at all. The first time I checked in on it, it couldn't do sound, it can do sound now and sleep and wake from sleep and all the other stuff you should expect from your hardware. (but it's always been a bit weird on Linux, but, I've had issues with waking from sleep on Windows too)
@@myhandleiswhat Given Apple's overall hostility to the effort, they've done very well. It's got a long way to go to get to daily driver status though.
I had yellowdog 2.1! You're bringing back some memories here, right down to the printed installation instruction booklet. Though I'd be hard pressed to recall what machine I ran it on, it's been a while.
I appreciate that Macs did a different style than the bland PC box. To this day, I wish the "All in one" was more popular in the PC space. Honestly though, I always thought the Mac colors of this era were ugly and stood out too much with anyone's home decor.
I love how these days there's a lot of mini pcs that you can easily mount on the back of monitors, essentially turning them into all in ones, it really opens the space to more customization in form and aesthetics while still maintaining the compact ready to go feel of traditional all in ones
Mac was very big in the education market, and at the time I thought the colours looked as though they were designed to be kid friendly and fit in a school room.
The man had vision and knew when products would sell. He also knew having a very dated unstable OS on a myriad of product lines with no clear difference was bad policy. He saved Apple. He was a complete dick towards nearly everyone though. He deserves credit for bringing Apple back from the brink but he also deserves to have the reputation as an 🍑hole.
Sent this to an Apple contact I have who loves the flower power and blue dalmatian iMacs. I hope someone else I once knew is watching too; he’d get a kick out of Linux on one of these things!
The number of penguins is the number of CPUs in the machine? :o I've used Linux as a hobbyist and in my work for almost 30 years and had no idea. Great video.
Love the videos, keep them coming. But maybe could be a good idea of going a little bit deeper and focus more on quality than quantity. Most videos now are similar and too short. Several old ones you mention “part 2” but those never came…
4:10 Oh man... I'm having a flashback to when one of my audio CDs got stuck ejecting from an iMac and I pulled it out and it has these two huge scratches from the mechanism. DAMN YOU APPLE!
I experienced the issue with mouse movement making electronic noise from the speakers, though not on an iMac but a regular ATX motherboard from the early 2000s. You need to replace the caps on the motherboard, specifically those responsible for USB. They're likely bulging already.
Mac-On-Linux requires some setup for audio. A sound driver needs to be dragged into the System Folder and sound emulation needs to be turned on in the configuration file.
You might get a kick out of this week's Star Trek Lower Decks episode in which Mariner and crew are forced to return to Starbase 80 and deal with it's "retro tech".
I had a couple of G3 towers and tried Yellow Dog but never really fell under the Macintosh spell, even with Linux's help. Have a 2011 Macbook Pro now with Linux Mint, so have circled round for another go. Love the videos, keep them coming please. Edit: can't spell :(
I first started experimenting with Linux around 2002 but by then KDE3 and GNOME 2 were out. I never really got a chance to try KDE2 or GNOME 1.x. They look interesting, especially older versions of GNOME--it looks like they were actually trying to compete somewhat with KDE on features, instead of dumbing their desktop down which they continue to do to this day.
TIL that there was something called Mac on Linux that allowed PPC Linux to run Mac OS and Mac OS X on PowerPC Linux. That was basically hardware assisted virtualization in the early 2000s. PowerPC was a really interesting architecture, it's a shame that it later lost out to x86 on the desktop.
At that time i used a Pegasos I computer with MorphOS. But of course also with YDL (later with Debian) and MacOnLinux, which made it possible to use MacOS 9 and 10 on a Pegasos II! I love the old style of KDE, today it's as ugly as Windows, why I use now Linux Mint Mate.

What a great episode! So proud to be the sponsor ❤
It was a nice ad too! Relevant!
And now we have Asahi Linux made specifically for the Apple Silicon Macs
As it gotten beyond alpha stage yet?

That is the best condition Flower Power I’ve ever seen… except for the usual iMac G3 stuff. :P
"Brittle on the inside..." yeah, iMac. You and me both. You and me both.
4:41 I actually didn't know that! The more you know!

Wait, there was an "innocent" Apple under Jobs? Oof, better not tell that to any of his former assistants who are still crying, lmao.
That’s what I thought 😂

Cool video! And great sponsor! Those retro callback doodads are adorable!

You might get the CD in... question is, will it ever come back out? lol!
I remember installing and running Yellow Dog Linux way back in the day. I might even have it in a box in my basement somewhere.

I remember installing Yellow Dog Linux on my Playstation 3. Good times!
Awesome with some retro Linux action! 🐧🐧🐧
Mac OS X & Linux could be legit.
Yellow Dog... My first Linux outside of a VM
The two stars on his hand refer to his Yelp rating
"words are hard" EandK ref yeahhhh

On my iMac G3, I had to glue back the rubber roller to its metal pin, so that it could "eat" the CD properly.

Nice to see the Flower Power dual booting not brave enough to try that on my Flower Power
I like the looks of that classicbot it would add to my classic mac !!

I'm surprised this wasn't another Haiku video

Finally a nice sponsor! Still waiting for a Tangerine restock though 🥺
Thank you. I am the designer of Classicbot. I haven’t forgotten about tangerine iBot G3. ❤
“Yellow doggin’” 😂😂😂
love your content dude
But can you get the disc out again?...
I first learned of YDL from the PS3
I've been wanting to do this for a while - iMac G3 with linux. Also, what's with the upload schedule right now???
Experimenting!
Is the Lisa video ever gonna be free or is it permanently a member-only video?
Might have to go into ALSA and choose your sound card.
Was there any way to do an update to Yellow dog?
Make a fedora video next!, I've been begging for months.
I am sorry Internet Explorer for Mac did not start. IE for Mac was loved by everyone! See the keynote video where Steve Jobs announced IE for Mac.
I had a Dell imitation iMac with Ubuntu on it many years ago. Too bad it was too low-spec to run OSX.
Flower power 🌺 ❤
LOVE

watching this from trinity desktop environment (kde 3.5)

Dual Booting an iMac like it’s 2001
Sad. No BeOS.

Amateur. If you were serious about this you'd _triple_ boot that iMac with Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, *and* YDL.
*FIRST!!1*
Love your content! I ask myself, why do you do videos with Linux? In my world: Mac = Mac OS + Mac Hardware
