It’s been impossible finding a 16 x 10 20” modern display let alone the daunting task of breaking into that neck to route the cables. But I have a 20” g4 ready for when that happens.
@@TheRenegade... I can't wait to see what they will do when the reach M7 Because they have iPhone Co-Processor called M7. I mean we can also make the joke when the release the m6 that the M7 already exists.
This reminds me of a build years and years ago someone did in a standard PC case with a Pico-ITX board. They gutted an old 230w PSU, fit the Pico-ITX board inside, then fit that inside of a standard ATX case and hung a small disco ball in the now-empty PC case. All the IO of course went out the back of the PSU housing, and it ran (IIRC) WinXP - "Powered by Disco!" was the guy's tag on it.
Agree on the screen quality of these older apple LCDs. I use an early Cinema Display (acrylic body version) on my retro gaming rig, and it still impresses me every time I switch it on.
Someone already has done it, it's just ridiculously hard to do and requires a slimmer optical drive than the one the G4 comes with. Although I wonder if it will be any easier with the M4.
@@fujinshu looks like the M4 mini almost completely fits into the G4's hard drive compartment, I think if you split the M4 and mounted the mainboard at the top like in the video and mounted the power supply in the bottom of the G4 and extended the cable between them, there world be enough room between the two for a standard 5.25" DVD drive, usb to sata adapter and you should be good to go.
What a GLORIOUS transformation. For several years I used a G4 like that (but with a smaller screen) and loved the design. You have brought something delightful back to life.
I had a dream where someone put an M4 in the G4 Cube, and then another person did a G4 Cube stand for the M4 Mac Mini. Wild to see this combo not appear in my dreams though.
Actually there seems to be more than enough space inside the base to fit one or two SSD inside the base. So if someone wants to upgrade a G4 to an M4, the cheapest Mini M4 with only 256GB might be enough for programs, if you add 2 or 4 GB of "external" (seen from the mini, but internal to the G4 base) storage for data. Also much more easy to upgrade later, soon as bigger SSD-storage is available.
Your singing that starts at 4:09 made me think I had somehow ended up in a Regular Car Reviews video. Good stuff. Hope you bring more of that to the videos!
My dream is that somebody will develop a board that fully-integrates everything (one power cable and button, exposes all the Mac mini ports, etc), including the original CD drive.
i've held onto 2 iMac G4s hoping i could do something like this someday, this is great! every time i tried to throw them out the nostalgia just wouldn't let me
I would buy that instantly. I love my 15" g4. used it as a dd for a year or so in the early 2010's. I would so do something like this with my 15" if juicy crumb had a board for it.
That is a great idea putting the new M4 inside the old G4; but one concern is that cpu fan; I think you will need it to be on the safe side. That standard blower fan isn't that good; so you better test it out and see the temperatures with increase CPU loads.
i came into this thinking "how is he going to dremel out the inside case" and "what crazy 3d printed mounting hardware is he gonna make" turns out he just did it pretty much how i would, double sided tape, works surprisingly well and is completely reversible
This new version of the iMac G4 with Apple Silicon internals comes without me even being still familiar with the M4 Mac Mini. Well, now the Mini is truly a mini PC in the most modern sense of the word, that is, with a similar footprint to the ones made by Beelink, Blackview and the like.
I still have one of the original G4 Mac Minis when it was first released. It was maybe slightly bigger than the new M4 Mac Mini. It was just slightly larger (width x length) than a CD/DVD disc and I'd say about the same height as the M4 too. Performance wise, It was sort of a dog! I've got in a box somewhere, someplace and has not been turned on in close to 20 years.
Back when they were out you could get an emac with basically the same specs for hundreds of dollars cheaper, and they still sold the iMac g3 until late 2003 so most consumers a looking for a desktop bought those instead.
Hmmm... with some 3d printing you could probably make a great mounting system for the M4 Mini motherboard and maybe even have room for an optical drive then.
Check FlexiSpot C7 ergonomic chair at bit.ly/3YLql8p and use my code ''24BFC7'' to get $50 off on the C7 ergonomic chair
Unrelated but you should edit the about this Mac to have the icon have a iMac g4 and instead of having it say Mac mini have it say iMac G4
It would make it look like the iMac G4 was built with the M4
@@RWBHeredid u mean 4k
Now we just need a 5k display retrofitted onto it!
Great job as always Mr. Retro.
Yeah that was my thought too. Then the outer shell is truly merely for the vintage visuals.
It’s been impossible finding a 16 x 10 20” modern display let alone the daunting task of breaking into that neck to route the cables. But I have a 20” g4 ready for when that happens.
Agree . the M4 supports 6k so whats the point of bolting on an M4 when the 20'' will only support 1650 x 1050
Surely there’s a 20” 4K display
I was thinking the same thing
I am glad someone else has verbalized the G4 M4 connection. I thought I was the only one! 😂
Too bad we'll be unable to draw parallels with PowerPC Macs anymore when the M6 comes out
@@TheRenegade... I can't wait to see what they will do when the reach M7 Because they have iPhone Co-Processor called M7. I mean we can also make the joke when the release the m6 that the M7 already exists.
@@TheAppleExperence They'll still probably call it the M7, because the co-processors are now in the same SoC.
Cant wait for the Mac M5 Pro wich heats up your whole house
Probably would be better to call this the iMac GM4, personally I would use the M4 Pro for style and POWERRRRRRR 😂😂😂
I’m one of those people who thinks the iMac G4 is still the greatest desktop design that Apple ever made.
Not gonna lie, I really liked the Mac G4 Cube's look and design. Can't say the same about it's performance though!
iMac M4 Cube
I personally prefer the transparent colors of the G3 series, but the iMac G4 is close behind
@@Marrianne415 Well, they have brought back color choices for the Apple Silicon iMacs, so that’s something.
@@erickleefeld4883 true, but I prefer the transparent aspect more

I know what I'm doing with a Raspberry Pi next weekend
I cannot begin to express how much I need an M4 Cube.
we need to petition to him!!! i agree
agreed!
Now if only Juicy Crumb would bring out a version with internal ports too...
That's a nice double upgrade right there, the G4 got better hardware and the M4 got better power buttons.
Now you need an M4 upgraded Intel DTK (which was originally P4 powered.) G4-P4-M4 trifecta!
Nah give us an M4 Intel Compute Stick
Throw in an iPhone 4 while you’re at it, add the A4.

That is freakin' awesome. The G4 iMacs still look ridiculously cool, even over 20 years later.

Enthusiasts can do the modification individually. If it comes to mass reproduction, more people will be needed for group buying.
The headbanging part was amazing
just a sad day, but this videos comfort me so much
My mini came today but won't be seeing such an exciting deployment.
I too was jealous when those came out. I believe my local Fry’s had one on display and it had a really weird stand with it. I thought it was so cool.
As someone who likes to case mod stuff for funzies, this is something that I’d legitimately use on the daily, as opposed to being largely a showpiece
That is so freeking amazing!!! Super WOW!!!

Best fun retro tech channel!!
I admire your bravery for using a brand new m4 mac on an old mac.
my exact first thought when the m4 mac mini was announced was
"this is gonna be great for making old (dead) computers into apple silicon machines"
For old and purist mac users, the iMac is simply "The Mac".
How many of you guys went to eBay after watching this video? 😁

It might be fine, considering the M4 is designed to run fanless anyway.
It's okay... M4 MacBook Airs don't even have a fan
I was thinking of how one could do this last night. Amazing.
