    The expressions on your face as you play says it all. You cannot go wrong with a Koaloha, and this ukulele is truly brilliant! Great review!

    I am not a fan of friction pegs generally, but my Koaloha has them, (the one I posted in your Facebook comments for this video), and they are great. The only friction pegs I like. I agree with you that this would look better with them on it.

      I think they've moved to gears right across the range now. I find that sad - just give me a choice

    I have the Koaloha royal pikake mango concert. It is amazing. Also have their royal pikake Koa tenor. It’s hard to stop playing at end of the day.

    Thanks Baz, it’s a beauty, and I do love mango. Koaloha are class and I always think….one day. Another great subjective review, I actually prefer the rear facing tuners they used to use on their concerts and soprano’s myself. They showcased that lovely headstock. I do wonder why they didn’t use Derjung geared rear facing tuners as they do make them. Have a great week.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well quite Mike - if they are insistent on gears - Der Jung make rear facing gears too!

    Koaloha are superb. I have a pikake soprano from 2007ish (the second time they brought them out). I remember trying mine against a standard gloss finish soprano and the pikake just nudging ahead with the volume. Great review, as always!

    Koaloha for the win! They make great instruments and that price including the case is very reasonable. Great review!

    I really think the uke on the right side (on your right side) with the square headstock looks great - brand?
    Thanks for this review, of another very nice uke!

  • @paul_mitchener_ukulele
    @paul_mitchener_ukulele ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks - I enjoyed the review a lot (both written and video). Some of the high end videos are to drool at the instruments more than to seriously aid a purchasing decision for me, but surely there’s nothing wrong with that. And this or something like it, maybe in Koa, would be my choice of K-brand ukulele. I mean, I really like the looks and sound.

    All the Hawaiian instruments really have gone up. When I got my KTM-00 in 2013, it was $1030 with an LR Baggs Five.0 installed. The KTM-00 without the pickup is just under $1500 now.

    Agree with you about the aesthetics of Koa, but I love the sound of Mango.

  • @steamboatmcg2197
    @steamboatmcg2197 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had no idea mango wood ukuleles were a thing. I think the wood looks neat, especially with the dark ebony neck. The wood has a worn, antique look that somehow still looks fresh and earthy. Best of all it sounds like a mango tastes, sweet and tangy but not too twangy...sorry, I had to. It rhymed...

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a great sounding wood - good alternative to Koa

    What's the name of the 1 finger picking song you play all the time or is it something you composed if so can you show how to play it someday maybe ??

    My sole issue with pineapples is that they tend not to work well with soundhole hooks, which is how I prefer to support a smaller instrument; the strap wants to slip upward and upset the balance.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can see that - rarely if ever use straps myself on anything other than tenor or up. That's just me though.
      Would say though - soundhole hooks terrify me - saw someone absent mindedly forget they are just a support, let the uke tumble forward and ripped a the top of a nice Kiwaya solid soprano in the process.

    Isn't this quite, simply, what a ukulele should sound like? It evokes its homeland somehow...

  • @drpkmurphy
    @drpkmurphy ปีที่แล้ว

    I really like the looks of this one! The only thing that looks strange is the grain color on line looks dirty like it has been played a lot. I think it is the lighting making it look dark. The headstock is real nice. I think the gears look good on this one. I really like the sound, it is rich and full! A real nice Soprano.. another nice review…. Thanks Baz… DOC

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's the common mango thing I dislike - many of the wood sets have a dark, sooty element I don't like. Thankfully they book-matched this set, but I'm still not a fan. It is, however, natural to Mango I think.

  • @johnchastain7890
    @johnchastain7890 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really like the "German Shepherd" coloring of the mango wood... but I agree about the tuners. Idea: if rear-facing aren't available, they should finish them in black so they don't distract & detract from the uke's cool appearance.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thing is - rear facing gears by the same brand that make these ARE available - I bought some the other day!

    • @johnchastain7890
      @johnchastain7890 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GotAUkulele Well then those silly Hawaiians should at least offer them as an option. After all, this is (by my standards) a high-end uke!

    Hello from France!I have been watching your reviews for a long time, and have enjoyed them, even bought a couple ukes on your advice.
    However ( sorry about the however), you claim to be impartial always, and I do not always agree. By the first 30 seconds of a review ( lately anyway), we already know whether you like it or not, your favorite brands always great, the rest not so much.I know you do not handle criticism well, and I apologize.
    I just wish to express my humble opinion.
    Take care!

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  ปีที่แล้ว

      I handle criticism perfectly well, but I think you missed the opening words in both the video AND written review - i point out that brands at this level don't make dogs, and accept that the review is more for fun! As for other reviews doing that - depends what it is - the last Amazon review for example I deliberately started out looking like it would be poor - but it actually wasn't.
      I think you may be missing the nuances of the Got A Ukulele style.

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and my favourite brands are NOT always great. I've played Kala on stage more than any other brand (check out recent reviews). And Flight I have championed as a newer brand more than many (but check some recent reviews of those with poor quality control).
      But it's no coincidence if the KoAloha does well and an Amazon 'who are they' brand doesn't..

    • @GotAUkulele
      @GotAUkulele  ปีที่แล้ว

      But really, the impartial element is mainly based on the fact I am not paid to say nice things or otherwise. I don't work for the brands or stores.
