  • Who is afraid of the blank canvas? Today artists are easily detached from their tools - easily bought and just as easily thrown aside. There was a time when equipment was cherished, constructed, cared for, a time when the Secrets d’Ateliers gave objects a whisper of their own...
You are currently watching the english version / version en Français : • [Secret d'Atelier E1] ...
Conceived as an allegory of painting, this video is meant to plunge the viewer into the century that changed the history of workshops. While there were few variations in painting methods since Antiquity, 18th century France played a major role in the development of painters' tools, neck and neck in a race with the English industry. This century marked a before and after in the democratisation of access to painting materials and announced the future well-stocked fine art stores.
I hope you will like this second episode of Secrets d'Ateliers! This video format is particularly close to my heart. It represents my passion for researching the artist's techniques and tools, and how in the past I wanted to be a costume designer or a movie set designer ...clumsy as ever with a needle, I decided to combine my love for historical reconstruction with my passion for art and compose inspiring short films for you. I hope I can take this direction with my channel.
This video would never have had the same look without the talent of Myriam (@L’Aiguilleuse Atypique) who made me the anonymous heroine of a live painting, or without the brilliant enthusiasm of Carl Malherbe who composed the soundtrack and the thousand sound effects of this video in barely a week. If you would like them to join me in producing new Secrets d'Ateliers videos, please feel free to throw me a dime on Utip or Patreon. I sincerely hope to bring this type of content to you more often on the channel, this is only possible with your support !
I still have so many people to thank for this video, in particular Mel de Bruyère and Kelly Mann for their advice on the costume, and especially @Selfie'storique and Emmanuel Brousse, the great cameraman and camerawoman of this video who stayed encouraging with good humour under the pouring rain! I will take the time to thank everyone one by one on social networks and in a video of the making-of in January;) Thank you all for following me dear apprentices, whether you are old or recently arrived, I am making you grey!

Voir la version originale en voix Française th-cam.com/video/j1qLWxRe9aA/w-d-xo.html
ERRATUM & PRECISIONS (I had to write a text for the voice over in a short amount of time, learn about the reasons about it in the making of th-cam.com/video/x0v3qJ4ge6E/w-d-xo.html)
    - Precision at 03:32, 1st known mention of a keyed stretcher appears in Pernety of 1757, 1st known illustration appears in the Diderot and d'Alembert Encyclopedia of 1771.
    - After a quick check-up, there was a mistake in the book I mostly used for this video, the etching at 02:21 comes from the 4th volume of "l'Encyclopédique méthodique" published by Panckoucke around 1785 as an addition to the Diderot and d'Alembert Encyclopedia. Therefore it does not come from the Diderot and d'Alembert Encyclopedia of 1765 as I was told later.
