There was a tiny blob of solder left of the mosfet that appeared to be bridging. It was later cleaned off and wasn't making any contact.

Thought you cleared that out huh🌝, some people are still complaining about it🙃.
they probably think that when you end the video you stop working on the device, which usually happens After you give it to big boss for final assembly (I think).

that tiny piece on the edge connector gold plated finger you mention is broken off around 1:20-1:50 is actually meant to be that way, it's so the power is applied in certain sequence if hot plugging

Awesome to see old school electronics repair like this still exists in our 'throw away' culture.

Hey @NorthridgeFix when applying heat near aluminum capacitors like you do here a neat little trick is to use the blade from a box cutting knife as a heat shield. Just rest it against the side of the capacitor and it'll dissipate the heat. Heck you probably have a load lying around somewhere too :D

a trick to find low resitance 'near short' components is to put a little power on the shorted rail and use a thermal camera to look where it's getting hot or cover the board with alcohol and see if there are any hot spots, where it evaporates faster.

  • @gorky_vk
    @gorky_vk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I think that high resistance reading on first gate is part of a problem. Resistance you read came from pull down resistor. It's usually around 8-10K because that's value of gate discharged resistor used. Too high resistance on first gate can leave it closed when it should be open and destroy second mosfet in process.
It will probably die quicky again.

The gate of a mosfet, out-of-circuit, should look like a capacitor: checking it with DC, from gate to source or drain, it should read as an open circuit. In circuit, of course, will vary depending on what it’s connected to.

thats btw a typical issue with the "low profile" 1070s and 1060s (overheating in general), coupled with (cooling) design flaws they are doomed to die "fast".
A few friends had such small 1070/1060s, at least 2 of 3 i know are already dead. One of them was obvious.... no heatsink or contact to anything on the VRMs, they easily got roasted over the years.
Only the temps.... my "full size" 1070 was always running cool af (55 or less) but i didnt realize for years it wasnt even boosting. My 1070 was used FOR YEARS with only 1513MHz GPU or so (instead of 1900Mhz+ Turbo clocks). But still, with turboclocks i also had only 65-69 degree for barlely a noise, meanwhile my friends had 75+ on the GPU (and additional missing proper VRM or Vram cooled) but already the single fan running at 1600 rpm+ (vs my manual fancurve for making the PC very silent but still cooler lol)
Luckily my 1070 i had survived everything (and now sold for a higher price i paid in 2016 BRANDNEW!...), but i also looked for a card with proper cooling of ALL components. Sadly on newer cards they tend more and more to give a sh*t about cooling some things.... sometimes its the VRMs, sometimes the Vram itself, sometimes even both on the cheapest models. And then there is the coil whining.... never had this with any GPU, but since some years i see more and more coil whining especially at the modern GPUs (2016 and newer)

Wont that small solder cause a problem on the capacitor at 10:30 ?!

I wish you were in my country man, i have an RX 580 that is showing the same issue but repair men here dont want to repair it they just say its dead they wont even bother to take it apart and test it.
very sad had it for three years and decided to break in the perfect time in the hardest time for gpus because of the shortage of chipsets . buying a new one is not even an option .

    Hello Alex
I had 4 shorted MOSFETs in my GTX 970 so I replaced them but they shorted again. I noticed something very strange is that when I spray a contact cleaner on the corresponding Gate Driver the short is gone, but when I tried to power the card again the short is back. I did that about 3 times and the short goes away every time with the contact cleaner on the Gate Driver. How can that happen?
