  • On 11 December 1936, unable to reconcile his desire for US divorcée Wallis Simpson with his role as King, Edward VIII made the shocking decision to abdicate the throne, bringing an end to a crisis that tested the boundaries of duty, love and the monarchy itself.
"At long last I am able to say a few words of my own," was how the royal, who the day before was known as King Edward VIII, began a BBC radio broadcast that would not just stun the listening public but reshape the future of the monarchy.
Following his abdication, Edward would later go on to cause more controversy the following year when the couple made an unofficial royal visit to Germany where he met with Adolf Hitler and others in the Nazi leadership.
Many years later in 1970, he gave an interview at his home in Paris with the BBC's Kenneth Harris, where said that he had no regrets over his decision to abdicate.

I've always wondered whether or not he had problems with fertility.
In an alternate historical timeland, Elizabeth II would have still become queen.
I believe history will consider the late queen to be Britain's greatest monarch.

Noel Coward said that the British people should erect statues of the Duchess of Windsor in gratitude for getting Edward VIII off the throne.
Can't disagree: considering the King's fascist sympathies on the eve of World War II, Britain dodged a bullet!

To be fair, Wallis Simpson was only the second-worst American divorcee to have married into the Royal Family.

Prior to WW2, there was a lot of sympathy in Europe for Germany. The root cause goes back to the Treaty of Versailles at the end of WW1. I won't hold it against King Edward VIII for visiting Germany at that time. Things change, of course, after Germany started WW2.

Prince of Wales (as he was known until he became Edward VIII) had multiple mistresses. His first lover was a married woman, Winifred Dudley Ward, who was publicly known as his mistress as they went everywhere together in London. Dudley Ward had 2 children with her husband, who was alive and well. Still, she was Edward’s mistress for years. Then, he moved on to Thelma Furness and numerous others. No surprise his womanizing continued and he chose the divorcee Wallace Simpson and left the throne for her. Good riddance. Why he is romanticized is beyond me!

Heartbreakingly sad that he couldn't marry who he wanted. Fair play to him after hearing this. Also we wouldn't have had Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and all the years she reigned and made even The nastiest men bow before her.

I know what you mean; he had a hard life. He never knew where his next million was coming from. The hardest thing I ever had to do was work in a coal mine at the age of sixteen. Your servile, bootlicking mentality makes me want to vomit. The Royal Family underpins the inequality in the UK; the country will never move forward until we remove them.

Wallis was too well used, frequently married and divorced, to be considered as a queen.

Harry could have married her, but should have lost his place in the succession

King Edward’s royal duties were no doubt valuable to his society, so I shouldn’t diminish *all* of that by equating it to nothing, although I did so *largely* “in jest”. But I think it’s quite romantic that he would sacrifice that Life in its *entirety,* & all of the many privileges it affords, only *to be* with the woman he Loves. Did he betray his People in doing so? I don’t think so, because there were others who were able to fulfil those duties to the same degree, and I think that was the decisive factor. Ultimately, all of this occurred at a different time when certain things such as prior marriages were considered *so* “taboo” that it prohibited a royal marriage. I guess because they had to set a certain *standard* that served as a *benchmark* for people in their society to aspire to.
