For anyone who has changed plugs and coil packs and still has drivetrain malfunction due to misfires, check your intake elbow boots. This is the part that connects to the intake of your turbos. I found mine to be cracked in multiple places and falling apart to the touch. Having holes in the intake after the Mass Air Flow sensor will severely throw off your air/fuel ratio and cause misfires and potentially cause harm to the engine. When searching for the replacement parts it’s called “outlet duct” on some sites because it’s the “outlet” from your intake filters. Other sites list it as “intake boot” and this one makes more sense because it’s the boot that fits on the intake of your turbos. Should be around $50 for each side. (Sold as individual “left” and “right” parts)
Quick tip: Fastest/easiest way to isolate a misfire on any car is to swap a coil to another cylinder and see if the misfire moves with it. Glad you were able to save yourself some money with that last minute swap!
OMG...we just got the same error message! I came here to find others that have experienced this issue. I think we live near you guys. Is this off of Vanden Rd. at One Lake Community?
The hard part is these errors are sudden and don’t provide anyway warning when the coil/spark plugs are no longer sufficient to provide power. Yes this happened right off Vanden rd by one lake.
Taking my BMW X5 to BMW Fairfield on Friday. The air occurred after Safelite changed our windshield out and then took it for a ride to calibrate the cameras. I think he was racing it because he was gone for like 25 minutes. I live off of Claybank and Gulf Drive by the lake.
Motor mounts was the culprit on wife bmw x1... it was making weird noises and driving rough. I swapped out the 2 engine mounts and 1 tranny mounts and she went back to full power and smooth as butter
NEW DINAN coils and NGK plugs. Ran, great for the first 25 mins, and I thought WOW!!!!! plroblem fixed. And that was it. It's intermittent, Misfire not always on, just comes on whenever it feels like it. IT DOES RUN RICH, CAN SMELL THE UNBURNED FUEL. HOW CAN THE INJECTOR BE TESTED TO MAKE SURE IT IS NOT OPEN STATE? Do the ngk plugs need to be gapped or are they pre gapped, same problem, 2016 x5m with a tune, misfire # 2. Took out #2 plug and lots of smoke coming out. Took out # 3 plug and barely any smoke coming out. The coil is firing, verified it by connecting another plug to it. Sometimes, LOTS of smoke(OIL) coming from passenger side exhaust. MAYBE FAILED TURBO? Passenger side ccv pipe is more oily than driver side, possibly oil being sucked into #2 cylinder . it is close to CCV connection. Any ideas, anybody with experience on the powerplants?

I shut the vehicle off and everything went back to normal. But I notice when I give it gas it’s a bit rough. I going to change the plugs and coil. Which of the two do you recommend?
Hey Eddie! I just want to say thank you so much for all the time and effort you spend creating your BMW videos. I’ve watched tons of your X5 reviews. I just pulled the trigger on a 2016 X5M. I was wondering with all of your experience in BMW ownership if you feel buying an extended warranty would be worth it? I ended up purchasing purchasing the endurance high end (five-year 120,000 mile warranty for 6800 bucks.
Congratulations on your X5M! Each X5M is different I’ve skipped on buying some because the history was a lot. Some others didn’t require as many service visits. Without knowing I would go on the side of caution. $6800 is a lot of money. If you plan to keep it that long and put that many miles it could be worth it but I would try for something along the $4,000 range. Those prices are always negotiable.

Have the injectors checked, one or more might be leaking. Even after new plugs and coils you'll still have a misfires.
