Absolutely loving the "I'll start my knee-strengthening exercises just as soon as I've got this hilly 27 miler out of the way" attitude. It was never in doubt 🤨 💪 Good work Nicola
Lol, yes that's exactly how it was wasn't it... 🙈🙈🙈🤣 I'm not sure it was wise but it is what I need to keep me sane. If the knee injury had been serious then I wouldn't have done it though... She says... 🤨🤨🤨🤣 I ran 13 miles today totally pain free so I'm definitely heading in the right direction 🤗🥰
Super inspiring Nicola, well done. Hope your knee has forgiven you and you are back to full fitness. My knee trouble must have been a reaction to the weather turning colder, as had one of my best weeks running in ages. That Penguin joke was awful - if only I knew any jokes that were printable, I'd send them in 😂😂
😂😂😂 I want to hear your jokes! That's awesome to hear you've had a great week running! My knee took 2 weeks to forgive me so now I'm back to needing to strengthen my leg and make my knee feel less vulnerable. I'm getting there though 😃
Thank you so much, that's so kind 🤗 To be fair I think although the trail makes it harder than road running in terms of making it MUCH slower, plus this had ridiculous elevation gain, I think my knee would have point blank refused a road marathon. The muddy and grassy bits were the bits where my knee was happy 😃😃😃 It was incredibly scenic. Just somewhere you feel lucky to be so it's a joy to run even when you're suffering 😍
Such a naughty patient , no point telling you off though lol you wont listen , Poppy running to you was such a lovely moment , i totally didnt well up a bit honest 🙄 .Feel better soon kiddo 😉
Had to watch the whole video to check that you made it to the finish! And relieved when you did! I went walking on Offas Dyke in torrential rain all day last weekend, wearing waterproof socks…like you I don’t they are really waterproof - you can’t really win because your feet get sweaty in them anyway. Like you (I think) I use a single pole to navigate slippery sections and going uphill/downhill. Top tip for protecting knees: don’t run downhill unless you are in a race, because the impact is enormous (4 times the pressure) I think you are amazing and thanks for your video…you loving the positive vibe!
Thank you so much 😊 you're right about running downhill but that's usually the fun bit! 🤣 Silly knees! I love having one pole, I had the other in my bag in case my knee became really bad and I needed to hobble to a road to get picked up but thankfully that didn't happen 🎉🎉🎉 Because I wear injinjis under my waterproof socks then the sweat doesn't bother me. They stood no chance of staying dry in the depth of water we were going through... I remained optimistic though 😂😂😂
@@NicolaRuns you mean apart from the weather? 🤣In my experience, anyway (which is limited to Western Australia, but I've done a few here): 1. You don't generally have to navigate for yourself. You would usually have the GPS trace on a phone or watch (and for really long, multi-day, runs that would be compulsory), but the course would also be marked/flagged, usually well enough to just follow that. 2. Most courses would avoid roads, even small ones, and farmland - much more bush and much less chance of cows 😉. Walking or running across private land isn't really a thing here - we don't have the same sort of public right of way system. And practically no chance of coming across a village. 3. There are more people! - which seems counter-intuitive in Australia, but usually everyone starts at the same time and except in really long races, you'd generally be within sight of other runners. I'm really slow but even I was surprised and sad the one time I did get left behind with nobody around. It just looks totally different. I think our trail events are fewer and bigger, although maybe you just choose the smaller events. I think you'd love some of ours - have a look if you've nothing better to do at the Transcend Ultra and the Margaret River Ultra. They are bigger and flashier events but the scenery is amazing. Or for the really crazy there's the Delirious WEST. Anyway, so interesting to see yours. Thanks!
@@pennysimpson2777 oh wow! That's so interesting! Some here are flagged (Ultra X are flagged) and we always have a gpx file. There are a few big events here but mostly they're smaller events. I've done a couple of bigger events but I find you get stuck in a conga line of runners on the small trails which can be frustrating although I love the big event feel and excitement! We're totally lucky with the right to roam/access to land. I mustn't forget that ❤️
Well done Nicola. Super happy that you were able to finish the race. That runner's knee can be painful and debilitating. Don't let it get out of control. Loved seeing your family greeting you midway through the race. I bet that really cheered you up. Definitely enjoyed the scenery but the course looked really hard to follow. Were the course markings pretty clear? During the video I was asking myself "how did you know to turn there?" it didn't seem very obvious at times. Always love seeing your race adventures and I am looking forward to your next installment.
Thank you 😊 yes I'm trying to keep an eye on my pesky knee! Ran 13 miles pain free on Wednesday so that's a massive improvement as I didn't even feel my knee as vulnerable 🎉🎉🎉 the courses on ultras are mostly self navigated. So they give you a map, route description and a gpx file and you navigate it. Most people use their fancy running watches but mine isn't fancy enough so I just use my phone. It's not as hard to navigate them as people think. Punk Panther do tape their races but some of the tape always gets removed by the public 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ 😂
I’ll definitely go to Nidderdale next year, I did Ripon with PP in June. Apparently one of their easier events, which was harder than anything I’ve done before (though it was a stiflingly hot day!) Great vid as always!
Thank you 🤗 Yes Nidderdale is stunning so it's such an awesome place to run! 😃 This race was super tough because of the hills but just bloody awesome to explore these incredible trails 🎉🎉🎉
Not sure if it's appropriate to say I enjoyed watching,as you did seem to suffer 😮. I signed up for my first trail marathon in January, only my second marathon ever, looking forward to the winter grind.
Ooh which one? That's so exciting! Once you start trail marathons then you won't look back, they're the best! Road running seems a bit pointless after you realise you can be running in such beautiful places 😍😍😍
@@alanrobinson2229 🤣🤣🤣 maybe you get a tart to eat at the end... Or at the checkpoints... Or else it means something else entirely. In which case I am very intrigued! 🤭🫣🤣
Thank you 😊 I love my Dexshell socks, they're slightly thinner than Sealskinz so a little more comfy. I'd always wear a sock underneath otherwise your foot sweats too much in them. The socks were ace but I went through too many puddles that were up to my knee so the socks didn't really stand a chance. Knee length waterproof socks would have been so much better. I've got a few pairs, I should have worn those! But for regular puddles that are just several inches then these are magic!
ATM I'm focusing on quads and glutes to try to make sure my knee recovers fully. So squats, lunges, hip thrusts, wall sits, banded side walks, etc etc Usually I'd do some plyometrics and a lot of core too. Which I have started picking back up. I've only just rejoined the gym after being out of it for 4 months so to be honest I need to do a bit of everything as I'm not very strong ATM! Also I do a lot of yoga based exercises too. The gym is such a great way to train over winter and you know what they say... Strength is free speed! 😃

Nicola you are an inspiration! Not just a marathon on a dodgy knee, but a Trail Marathon, wow. Did look v. scenic tbh

Soggy is an understatement 🤣 I was very pleased I was in waterproof socks, they kept my feet warm if nothing else. That water was cold! 😳

I've just started going to my local gym to try it out over the winter. Out of interest, which exercises are you incorporating into your S+C?
