    Dear Mary's son . . . Here's what I learned from your video.
You are a fortunate soul to be loved and nurtured by this generous woman.
She knows in her hands how the butter, sugar, and flours should feel at every stage of blending and shaping. And she knows in her heart her dear son, all the many days and nights since you were conceived, born, and grew and as you now grow.
Thank you, good son, for sharing your well-honored mother Mary and her Scottish Shortbread.
    Cheers, Mary!

I always think it is so kind of someone to share a family recipe with strangers, i think that it is the ultimate sacrifice for a cook, we appreciate your mom sharing with us may God bless your mom, you and the whole family :-)

Three generations of passing this recipe down. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I have been looking for an authentic Scottish Shortbread recipe. I usually buy the Walkers but now I am thrilled I'll have my own recipe. Your a doll Mary!

Hi Donna. The song is "Home" by Michael Buble from his album "It's Time". Enjoy!

I figured it was playing in the background and you couldn't remove it. I found it very distracting and made it difficult to catch what she was saying.

@kwkrajczar Woops - I made a mistake on the conversion. My Mum meant 0.75c of berry sugar and rice flour (she just looks at the measuring cup which has ounces as a measurement of volume and not weight). So the correct weight measurements should be:
    450g butter
    120g berry sugar
    120g rice flour
    400g regular flour

I've done 2 other youtube videos (3 in total) of my Mum. The second one was "Mary's Bramble Jam" and the latest is "Mary's Scottish Cheese Scones". If you want plain scones you can simply eliminate the cheese from the recipe - they are really good. You should be able to find them by typing in the titles above and I will try and figure out how to link the videos together. All the best.

My grandmother was a great cook also, and she used her hands to. After all they didn;t have all the things they have today. I have all those things today, but I catch myself using my hand for a lot of things, maybe its because I can remember the olden days, I'm 85 years old. If you don't have all those modern gadgets, you use what you have. your hands. very good recipe.

One of the easiest recipe's I ever followed!!! they taste incredible.😍
    I used these measurements:
    450g butter
    120g berry sugar

    400g regular flour
I accidentally added too much sugar, but I think the above measurements would have been perfect had I stuck to it!

I am in love with Miss Mary! I have to admit that I was in tears by the end of this video, so many things that remind me of my grandma. Wonderful memories that I will be sharing with my cousins. We have missed her my grandmother's wonderful "tea cakes" as she called them for so long and have just recently started the mission to find the recipe. When I saw the shot glass cutting the cookies, I knew... this is it! Being a small kiddo I had no idea that it was a shot glass, I always thought it was a cookie cutter LOL. Just 3 days ago I found out it was my Grandpa's Scotch and Bourbon glass. I will be trying Miss Mary's recipe soon and will teach my not so lucky cousins the art of taking tea with tea cakes that was passed on to me. Thanks so very much for posting this video, it made my day! You are so very blessed!

I view this video with great regularity, as it brings back memories of better days, when my grandmother's "soothing Irish Brogue" permeated every nook and cranny of our souls - with 'classic grandmotherly comfort'. (the 'reverse' of that aspect, was when she became p**sed off, and spewed forth fiery vitriol filled with the best in passive aggressiveness)

It was wonderful! I only had all purpose flour and confectioners sugar though - used 1 cup of the sugar and 4 cups of the flour with the 4 sticks of Challenge unsalted butter and baked at the recommend 300 for 30 minutes on bottom oven rack = so wonderfully tender and turned out exactly as shortbread should texture wise ! I put it in my recipe book for making again :) thank you so much!

Great to hear Sarah! I just made 2 batches yesterday for my wife's Christmas party and they are all gone now. If you can find rice flour it adds a nice crunch to the shortbread. If you don't have bakers sugar, regular will do. I haven't tried it with confectioners sugar, but it sounds like it worked out well. All the best.

I've heard that cornstarch & wheat flour works instead of rice flour & wheat flour.
If you want to make regular sugar finer like caster sugar, you can put it in a blender, food processor, electric coffee grinder, or bullet style blender, to make it finer. Confectionary or powdered sugar works great too.
I'm looking forward to trying this recipe.
What a special gift to treasure and how very gracious & generous of you to share it.
      Thank you.

She was the best! 1lb of butter = 2 cups. 6oz of rice flour = 3/4 cup. 6 oz berry sugar = 3/4 cup. All the best!
