    I dont know why I went through the trouble of doing this (Part of it was I was curious what %ile are GMs) but I looked up Danya’s Fide page to see his global ranking (163) which is actually insane but I think since its not like top 10 people under appreciate exactly how insane that is. For one he’s already in the top 10% of GMs who themselves are in the top 99.5% of FIDE ranked players. So he’s better than 90% of people who can say they’re better than 99.5% of serious tournament players. But what should really blow you away: approx 605 million people play chess actively, and obviously there are no “undiscovered” 2600 level gms not FIDE rated, so that would put Danya in the top 99.99997%ile in the world. And he’s not just a 1 in a million player (he’s actually much better than that) but he’s a 1 in a million teacher as well. And we really just get to listen to him teach and analyze his games almost every day & it’s 100% free. That’d be like if Kevin Durant was your high school’s basketball coach. It’s honestly incredible when you sit down and think about it.

    • @northpenguins
      @northpenguins 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I don't think every person who could be a GM will try so it does look a little exaggerated, but obviously it's incredible.

    • @rafadhamadda9215
      @rafadhamadda9215 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Thats really incredible but i dont think kevin durant (top10 basketball player of all time) is the appropriate comparison, jrue holiday i think is more appropriate

    • @noThankyou-g5c
      @noThankyou-g5c 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@northpenguins I’m not basing these calculations off of anybody’s “potential” only their true current skill level. If you accept the fact that 605mil people play chess than its a simple factual statement he’s in the top 99.99997%ile of all players. I guess I made that confusing w the “one in a million prodigy” line. I actually meant to take it out.
      The only things that could be dubious as far as the numbers are concerned are:
      -the estimates for how many people play chess (this was estimated based off of a large scale survey and obviously no survey is 100% accurate)
      -The fact that theoretically, there could be a non FIDE ranked player better than Danya, although imo the chances of this being true are almost non existent. You have to play other GMs to get to the GM level and while I guess its potentially possible now w online chess, to get better than 90% of GMs only through online play and never attending a single rated tournament seems so unlikely its not worth considering.

    • @noThankyou-g5c
      @noThankyou-g5c 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@rafadhamadda9215 you’re probably right. I don’t know anything about basketball. I just tried to pick a name I could think of that I didnt think was considered in contention for best of all time. Whoever would be a good comparison would have to be in the top 25% of NBA players. Another way of thinking about it would be they’d have to be a starting player on a team that made the playoffs. No idea if Jrue Holiday would fit that bill or not

    • @northpenguins
      @northpenguins 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@noThankyou-g5c There could be other reasons than skill, like pay from tournaments not being enough for the average chess player to actively pursue it and age, but that doesn't change the point much.

      The amazing thing is, at the very top level, a lot of this analysis and calculation seems to be intuitive and natural for them. They subconsciously eliminate certain options right off the bat, which they can only do after years of conscious study and practice (as well as prodigious talent). I remember when Carlsen once said in an interview "A lot of the time, I just KNOW what to do". I find this fascinating..

      @@trdi White has a bunch of moves to avoid mate but none to save the b-pawn which is his only hope... at least that's what I can make of it :) Still an amazing move that was completely winning and was missed in this analysis.
