    I think the most appropriate person to stand and korero and represent it's people is chosen based not on gender but by that person ability to do so ... but if you can ... try to honour Tikanga Maori as much as possible

    The alternative is to let our tikanga marae die. There is an absolute dearth of men in some areas capable of upholding this tradition. In fact, some are already reverting to speaking pakeha after reciting a perfunctory standardised korero. This one gentleman had four fluent wahine Māori beside him. Bloody ridiculous.

    Tikanga is Tikanga, Kawa is kawa. One thing i know about Maori people is we chop and change our Tikanga and Kawa. You look at other Ethnicities, They do not change their customs to suit other's needs. Im not saying no to our Wahine speaking on the Pae, Because there are Iwi out there who do have Wahine doing Whaikorero. Each Iwi to their own. Something we ALL must respect.

    If there's no representative within the mob,wahine shall Stand in their place,it not a child's play,honour and respect seniority first, is the primary law of tribal existence.culture are not to be frozen in the time space but rather by it own evolution to the changing times. ..be smart in your art forms.

    I think tikanga is a living entity, evolving, acclimating, accommodating new knowledge, experiences and concepts.
    The dressing in black came from respect for Queen Victoria's grief for Prince Albert's death, the ringing of the bell from pre- Christian European tradition...
    I am not saying abandon all tradition, but saying perhaps review the reasoning behind that tradition, to see if it remains valid in the times we live in.

    We should look at all the consequences this presents not just the good ones.
    1.) if we allow women to whaikorero does this stop/slow down the momentum of teaching our Tane to kaikorero.
    2.) does it also open the door for men to say they want to now karanga on the marae?.
    3.) does it sit in line with the tikanga our tipuna and elders have set for us
    4.) does build a culture of people questioning and changing tikanga and roles/protocols

    I only know one women who has done a Whaikorero but a.. he Tohunga te kuia -he mana o te whenua te kuia -he toa te kuia- rawa kaore te koroua rangitira on that day so there are certain circumstances but other than that Kao! The pae belong to the male in my peoples experience think itll be a disrespect to alot of koroua and kuia can be wrong but ae

    I think whoever is best connected to the people, and land can speak. So let women speak and let men do the welcoming.

      There are roles in which to pay homage to generation of customs and beliefs. Once formalities are done.
      By All means a woman can have thier say

    Do traditions ever remain static? Is it time to think about the fact that a lot of traditions change over the generations as different people bring different perspectives and different traditions of their own into evolving dynamics? Think of something as simple as a whanau tradition (family meal), as the whanau grows and changes, so do the traditions. We only had grandmas Christmas plum duff for pudding at lunch, now as we are 5 blended generations we have multiple puddings to cater to all of the different whanau and their traditions and preferences. We even cater for vegetarians and gluten free, they weren't around when my grandma was a child. Traditions change with the times. Women have come a long way with rights, is this just another place for women's rights to now be respected, or is this something more???? Ko Te Ati Awa tōku Iwi.

    Màori traditions span millennia, who are we to change it? In my opinion stand and speak in english with what reo you have, as times moves on one will have more of an understanding of powhiri process and the protocols involved such as, Tauparapara,Waioha Tuatahi,Poroporoaki Ki Nga Mate,Hono and Whakamutunga
    We as current Tangata whenua are here to preserve our culture not change it.
    Te paepae belongs to the male, leave it at that. Mauri ora

      I suspect Colonial manipulation I am persuaded that our Women had these inalienable Rights on The Marae Area but To demonstrate Authority and Mana to the Colonial Settlers Men had to Step Up and dominate the Marae Area and Women were subjected to Patriarchal Dominance as brought by the Colonist Settlers

      Pae belongs to the houkainga. The kōrero belongs to the man. The start of all powhiri must be a woman and only the woman can karanga it was designed for a woman. It's about team work and tikanga for the process of powhiri. It's not about giving power to lady or respect to lady its the coming together of people for the kaupapa on the marea to make the process common between male female.

    Once Traditional formalities are preformed with respect. Then of course Women should be able to stand to speak after the you pass the sacred threshold. To do it before is to tramp on the traditions laid by Our Forebearers.
    Who is anyone to do this, but Disrespectful.

    Karanga are more important then the whaikorero. Women can noa the tapu. It's not about what you can achieve it's about tikanga men at the front woman are behind blessing as they go while men are taking each kōrero.
