Monitor Wind Vanes are great! We never had to touch the helm when we did our transatlantic from Florida to the Azores.

While they may seem expensive at first, they are SO worth the money. Think about it, $5k for a crew member who never eats, sleeps, or talks back!

On my maiden voyage, I steered by hand for 2,000 miles. On my passage I did teach myself sheet to tiller steering but could have done with a wind vane. If anybody has a second hand one for sale, let me know. Fair winds.

Does anyone know why he took the Albin Vega vs the Pearson on the second trip?

What about sheet to tiller steering? I like a wind vane and all but, your sails will keep the boat on course just as well with some bungee cords and the sheet on opposite sides of the tiller. Green as can be a a hell of a lot cheaper/ less complicated. Besides, if the apparent wind changes, you have to adjust the vane anyway so what is the point? Just adjust the sheet and bungee cords to suit the new angle/course.

Sheet to tiller is rubbish system. Takes ages to fiddle to get it right. It does not work on a fin keeled boat like mine which is directionally unstable & cannot be balanced. A vane gear can be set up in seconds & will work accurately. No constant adjustment etc. also if you look at some videos of sheet to tiller systems you will see the person making regular tweeks. That is NOT self steering. Self steering is setting it up & going below for a kip for a couple of hours, confident the boat is Ok. Sheet to tiller precludes wheel steered yachts whereas vane steering can be used.
