    The NEXT EPISODE is always the best Alan.. I would agree that EPISODE #5 is great. While the Contessa 26 is well know for its sea keeping abilities in capable hands, the Wave Rover 650s modern design will be far superior for singlehanded sailing with its simple rig, greater tracking ability, storage capacity, and below deck watch keeping abilities. Both You and Andy have created the ultimate mini cruiser.
    Thanks for taking us along.

    Definitely go for a dome. They are brilliant. I still think having narrow side decks around the doghouse us going to be very important for easy and safe movement forward.

    # 5. It shows what minimalist solo sailing in small boats on open oceans is about. I like # 63, too, because it is a summary of all your experiences. So inspiring, thanks a lot. By the way: I adore Rover's Rest. Please hang on! 😊

    S1EP34 - this episode shows some really useful lessons for any intending or actual Ocean sailor. The consequences of a knock down, safe recovery, and the ever present, if unlikely, possibility of being run down.

    EP 14 surviving the hurricane. I love it because, while sailing solo is a solo adventure, the sailing community is by no means a lonely place. It was awesome to see how everyone came together and hunkered down 🙏🏼

    I like the idea of curving the top, as well as the dome, I recall I saw a Jester challenge guy having a 22 or 24” boat with exactly that beyond a quick 360 view I would hope it gives ergonomically ability to stay at least there up right for say a ordinary 6 ft person.

    • @SailingWaveRover

      With a few modifications one could get 6'

  • @iMcWatch
    @iMcWatch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    the dome seems like a nice idea, but seems to me its a bit of a hazard to use during heavy sees as you could seriously injure your head if a wave jolts the boat while your head is in it.

    • @SailingWaveRover
      @SailingWaveRover  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting thought. Definitely you will have to brace yourself pretty much always when at sea.

    • @Garryck-1
      @Garryck-1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In those conditions, the same danger applies anywhere below deck, not just in the dome.
      To mitigate the risk, all that's really needed is to wear a thick knitted beanie (what the Canadians call a toque). And if the weather is particularly bad, a cyclist's helmet.

    I've missed the contest being behind somewhat lol, but I had to share my favourite episodes nonetheless.
    I have 3 faves from season 1 (without looking backwards). The (2) where you built the Mk3 and which introduced me to your channel; your first Atlantic crossing when you had to "heave to" (first time I'd seen that); and when you deployed the warp (ropes) during the storm.
    I learnt as much from watching you sail as I did in my later course lol.

    Alan, if you do decide to go with the dome idea, consider doing what Annie Hill has done with her latest boat, 'FanShi'. Her dome is made of two domes, one slightly smaller and mounted inside the larger one, essentially making it a double-glazed window. From an insulation and anti-fogging perspective, this makes a lot of sense.

    • @SailingWaveRover
      @SailingWaveRover  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks JAFO, the fogging and condensation were a concern of mine. A double wall would take care of that.

    Absolutely the only way to go is to seal up those areas under the deck and the sheathing for the deck as well. Thinking ahead smart move mr Rover. I couldn't imagine forgetting to do that it would've been a real pain in the rear end of that boat to neglect that till later on that is for sure. I think the Dome Idea look's kind of odd and a bit strange but it can be a handy thing to have at times when its miserable out. I have my reserves about the dome but its mostly because it doesn't look that flattering, that's my thoughts on the matter.

    Looking forward to the keel science (but don't get too radical/experimental - leave that to the racers)... Now time to go back through the library! PS I had previously been thinking how useful a dome would be, but with an interior waterproof hatch to seal it in an emergency.

    • @SailingWaveRover
      @SailingWaveRover  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The keel has been simplified with this new procedure. I fully agree about keeping it simple. I too would like a emergency seal (plywood) to cover the hole where the dome would be in case of emergency.

    while the curved cabin might look good, you really want to have a flat surface for your first step going to the bow, thats just a safety feature that has to come first than aesthetics in my book. about the dome, its nothing new, but it looks good. check a boat called the Aviateur 5.70 designed by Eric Hanseval, a french designer. Mini transat hull, really cool. i actually bought the plans and started drawing it up in Cad to have the pieces CNC'd, but along the way got another (boat) project

    • @tomwaite4594
      @tomwaite4594 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually, all proper offshore sailboats have a curve in the deck...its called camber. Unless you plan to sail on an even keel 100% of the time a flat surface is never flat. Also the bow in the deck provides additional strength as it is in tension. Good luck with your boat project!

    • @pmnfernando
      @pmnfernando 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomwaite4594 the idea wasnt to make a completely flat surface and remove the crown/camber of the cabin. but to simply make a section of it flat to increase safety. 2 degrees off of horizontal is enough to drain water and if those degrees run across, 200 mm of section (from the centreline, atwarthships) the difference is next to nothing, height wise, but enhances friction between your foot and the ground. being as close as possible do the centreline means more stability but also positions you on the higher point of the cabin. its a boat: compromises!!!

    I have heard that you can thin regular epoxy with acetone, have you tried that? I'm planning to use a penetrating epoxy on the mast this year. Total Boat seems to be what's popular down here in the States, a little less expensive than S1 too.

    • @SailingWaveRover
      @SailingWaveRover  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can thin epoxy with either methyl hydrate (denatured alcohol) or acetone or heat. Heat being best and acetone being least. As it is not being used as an adhesive you would be safe to use acetone or alcohol. I'm not sure about the percentage. We don't seem to be able to get Total boat here sadly. Good luck with the project, I sure that I will be seeing it on your channel.

    • @howtosailoceans1423
      @howtosailoceans1423 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SailingWaveRover Thanks for that, Alan. The only problem with heat is that it will cause fast curing, or do you heat up slow cure epoxy? Hmmm. Yes, I'm thinking I'm going to try the Total Boat stuff and see how it goes.

    Alan is the Mk3 steering system only for tiller steered craft or can it be used with ♿ wheel steering as well? I love the dome idea and I can remember a cruising catamaran back in the 70s utilising a dome off a WW2 aircraft for there round the world voyage and they claimed it be a game breaker, a must have for safe cruising. All the best with the 🏡 house. 🐟
