- Hello, I'm Kris. Long time no chat! Big changes over here - at the end of last year we moved out of our London flat and onto a 70ft narrowboat. So that turned life upside down for a bit, but here is a little vlog of the day we saw our boat for the first time. I hope you enjoy it, more to come on the boaty front.

Is this my most highly anticipated content of the year? Yes, 100%. Narrowboat life looks so charming. Though I assume future vlogs will cover the ups and downs, for now I will continue to romanticize it. The round portholes, canal-side stops, and incredibly clever boat puns and names, just so cute. Incredible knitwear throughout, as usual. Can't wait for more!!!

Brilliant! A style of editing and presentation that is fresh and defo most appealing. High praise indeed, as I have been sharing/living narrowboat-life vicariously here on YT since 2012 ... I'm a book-worm too so super excited to have found your book reviews too!! Plus Plus!! ... Ok now I've paused the vid at Crewe Station to share my excitement at the prospect of viewing this boat for MY first time! It is an event that I dreamed of for myself one day ever since hiring a "cruiser" for a week with my first wife on The Norfolk Broads way back in August 1975. It became a long-term "warm-fuzzy" objective for an early retirement. Sadly that has never eventuated due to being whisked off to a new life in NZ in 1983 by my 'new found' Kiwi wife and our 18 month old daughter! No canal networks nor narrowboats here sadly 😟Ya never know what's around the corner ay!! Am looking forward with bated breath to future instalments from you both onboard "Lands End!👍😃

Beautiful boat. One thing to note, 70' is an absolute whopper of a boat, and if you're planning on living in London, you will most likely need a permanent mooring. I lived on a 53' boat 25 years ago and loved it, but the canals have gotten a lot busier since then.

Thanks! I think we’ll need a full year under our belts before we have proper numbers, but we’ll try! At the moment because of the cold weather we’ve been spending a fortune on energy, very much looking forward to the solar powered summer months.

There are several Narrowboat Vlogs that I absolutely love. This was different….in a very good way. Don’t get me wrong, they are all unique, style wise, personalities, what they focus on, their skill sets, etc. I don’t know what your careers are, but this was professionally done. We’ve been watching your vlogs in the wrong order and have just realised we met you at the beginning of your journey on your boat (we had only started our canal boat life on 08-Sep-22.) Mick gave you a few Nicholson maps to get you started, although they were already about a year old lol. You show a piece around Barlaston and our boat is shown moored right outside The Plume of Feathers!
Hi Wendy, I'm so happy you found me!! We've actually thought about you guys often, as you were the very first people we chatted to when we just got on board and it was so kind of Mick to give us the maps. We've also remembered his advice to always fill up the water tank at every opportunity 😂 Hope you're on the mend now and still enjoying life on the water. Congrats on buying a boat! My advice to you as a new boat owner is to do a Helmsman course, you will learn so much about boating and will give you more confidence in the boat itself.
Thanks Steven! I’ve heard good things about those courses, would have helped with the insurance costs too. Maybe one day! So far I’ve been learning on the job 😅

wow you bought a boat good for you guys you will love it if you don't mind me asking where did you get such a lovely boat from and where do you plan to go first .?
we are new to the boating club as well but we had are boat built for us as we could not find a used boat that we liked the layout was everything to us had to have all the things we wanted so we came to a boat builder and the rest is history took a long time to get it though nearly 18 months way to long but there was Covid 19 plus this war going on as well .

Good luck with the boat,i was interested in how you found the right boat to buy! Ive been looking for a while and it seems there are a lot of conmen ( and women) in the boat sales business, getting an honest price appraisal is so hard. Did you go through a broker? Did you get a full survey done? What did the sales contract look like, have you any guarantees? Did you understand about engine time and
servicing schedule’s? I didn’t see any solar panels did you want solar? Its particularly hard for me as i have some idea about boats and know when I’m being hoodwinked, I cant seem to find a fair deal in the current market, i have looked at a couple and thought the owners were knowingly trying to sell me a lemon, had one guy pull it off the market when i said i would require an out of water survey 😏 if you could do a video on looking for a canal boat, how we did it please
Hiya, we did go through a broker (Boatfinder Brokerage) who were great. It did feel like it was an extra layer of security as they handled things like holding the deposit and doing all the sales paperwork, and were just generally super helpful so I would totally recommend them. We were also just lucky that the sellers were lovely I think! They were totally happy to give us all the info we asked for and had a massive folder of all the records for everything to do with the boat and answered all our questions. They were the only previous owner so it was a bit easier than an older boat which might have gone through multiple owners.
We did get a full out of the water survey done, yes. And we do have solar, I think it's just not visible in the video :)
I do think it's a tricky market at the moment, even since we bought ours prices have gone up (I assume lost of people have had the same idea as us) so you just have to keep looking and ask lots of questions. I'd need a lot more experience under my belt to feel like I can give any proper advice though, so I think a video would be some time in the future!
Crikey, that was quick. Are you moving on straight away. Have you conned your families into looking after all your furniture etc that wont fit on the boat? 70ft is about as big as they get, so you should manage the initial confinement ok. Well done, good luck, and take care.
We moved on in November so it was fairly fast! We did have to offload some items on our very understanding families yes 😅, some stuff also went into storage while we decided what we’d need on the boat. Most furniture we sold or gave away.
I am in the process of looking for a boat to buy, i like yourselves have looked at 100s & 100s of boats online, i am hoping to buy one local to me if i can here in the Midlands, could you tell me which site you found your boat please, and also did you have the boat surveyed before you bought it ?, your boat looks fantastic and i hope everything goes well for you both, i have subscribed and i am looking forward to following you both on your journeys,

I think I first saw it on apolloduck (which I was browsing like it was my full time job, there wasn't a boat for sale I didn't see in this country lol) but it was listed via Boatfinder Brokerage. They were really great, super nice and helpful, would totally recommend going through them as a buyer. We did have a survey done, we put in our offer and then a deposit subject to survey. We did indeed. We put down a deposit subject to survey, but it happened a couple of weeks later so I didn’t mention it in this video!

It's definitely a narrowboat however it's definitely not a houseboat. In order to be classified as a houseboat the vessel must have no means of self propulsion. Your narrowboat has an engine I presume? If it has no engine it would be a called a butty not a houseboat. Just letting you know 😉

Planning a boating wardrobe?! First, dispose of any item of clothing you don't absolutely need. This process will be repeated when you attempt to move onto the boat!
Very happy with my boating wardrobe so far Mike 😂 I did have to buy some new practical gear which I didn’t have when I lived in a London flat, being waterproof was not previously a major concern!
As with a wide beam doesn't a 70 foot boat also limit where you can go? You could not access the Lancaster Canal via the Ribble link for example?
And please consider NOT slipping in mid vlog adverts. We avoid TV because of the barrage of adverts destroying the atmosphere of a story. I can think of several channels I have unsubscribed to because of that deal breaker. Ads at the start and end of a vlog are never Skipped by me so the revenue isn't lost to the vlogger. Mid story ads are always skipped when the opportunity arises meaning you don't get paid for them anyway. So why upset the viewer and risk losing a subscriber? Especially when just starting out and trying to establish a following.
True, 70ft does prevent us from accessing a small part of the waterways primarily in the North, but the vast majority of the network is fine so on balance we thought it was worth having the additional living/working space.
Do I have mid vlog adverts now? I’m below the threshold for monetisation, so I can’t actually control ads at this stage

Hope you got a survey before putting in the final offer,and always check the inspection hatches before you buy.But it does look A1 condition and very smart inside only 31feet bigger than mine lol 😂
The final offer was indeed subject to survey! It really was in terribly good condition, I feel like we’ve slowly been ruining it ever since we picked her up 😂
