you stabilize your anvil more, you will lose less energy, firmly attach it to that frame and. stack up mass on it, again making sure it cant shift around. also, a larger hammer means you get more out of each strike. feel free to disregard this entirely, I'm just a hobbyist, and you do good work in the end. I just thought i would try to helo make it a bit easier less strikes, less possibility for mistakes
+Miller Knives No need for thanks. See if it helps first. You've actually given me an idea on how to make an anvil, as opposed to this large rock I found. I've been watching since that wood handled kiridachi video, so I'll be on the lookout! good luck my friend!
Incorrect. That is exactly how one grinds blades. The fear you have is not born out in operation. Every book on blade making shows this, and I've been doing it for 33 years.
+Mike Williamson Yet, when you strop a blade, it is done just that way. I've also seen makers grind with the belt traveling away from the edge. Cutco does this, for one.
The most no-bullshit-just-making-a-tomahawk video ever. Liked just for the zero bullshit factor. P.S. Funny feeling, when you're watching someone do this and go "ooh neat" and then realize that all the tools he is using are an engineering marvel you can't even begin to comprehend.
Man I love your creations, if I had a workshop I would love to make knives too (even copying some of yours), but as a student in a small city of Austria I don't have the tools and the needed space. So I watch your videos and get satisfied even by looking at them. Continue your work!

Sisteelin: Yeah, I saw a LOT of missed strikes. He did get a good finished product, but there are less intensive ways to do it. He also needed a lot of strikes to upset the end.
A noob here, would you need to harden the steel again or can you leave it the way you bought it? I believe a wrench is already quite hard and probably heat treated, but I noticed you heated the nearly finished product and quenched it in something, I assume water since there were no flames. I am thinking of copying this and seeing how close I can get, would love this bit of info, I know how to do everything else shown here but I want a usable product in the end :D
How do you figure? I've got a 1000 year old Viking axe here. Guess how the edge was put on? It was forge welded. That was the standard way of making one before about 1900 when steel (vs iron) became available in large quantities.
what type of steel did you forge together with main blade it looked alittle wide before profiling it outstanding piece beauty you have great talent 🇺🇸👍
+Miller Knives is there any way that I can contact you in private messaging I have a 13yold son he really likes your videos he says you or a natural artist and you take pride in what you do. we have a couple of huge wrenches and he wants to make one like you and try to show his you your design and may be send it to you to autographed he really enjoys your videos we just need some tips on what to do and every bit of the work will be credited to you of your design which I doubt it will look as good as yours he wants something like this design to bring hunting and camping with I have a Facebook but I don't know no how to send a private message if you could help us out we will most sure do something in return thanks Jody

Not going to lie, that started out looking HILARIOUSLY rough, but with a lot of clever grinding and it came out looking great, I want one.
u hit to hard and u miss lol
Make one. I plan on attempting to.

For anyone wondering the size, it's 1 5/8th inch.
This is probably one of my favourite hatchets I've ever seen
I totally agree, how can I buy one off you, ? I have a rail rail road nail hammer I use for body work , I love it

Girls must be scared of him..
Too bad it looks like he misses all his strikes...
Its been sped up
William Brooker Do you hear that? Its the sound of the joke flying over your head.
Yeah I wondered if I f*cked up after that
Pretty fkn cool right there make me want to start blacksmithing! Good job on that one bro 👍🏽
this has to be the coolest tool transformation ever! I just found your channel and I love it! you're an extremely talented and creative person sir.
Didnt even know it was possible to smelt and reforge tools like this after all treatments and such to make them the finished tool. Badass stuff man
The sped up footage is hilarious.
"Welcome to blacksmithing on cocaine- LETS GO!"
i love the sound of hammer on steel.
i feel you brother

I watch stuff like this all day long best thing I've seen made ..genius ..I want one
A most beautiful transformation! I am amazed at the symmetry and balance of the shapes for the axe head and the pick head. Nice work!
Beautiful tool, awesome work!
I'm going to need you to calm down sir.
dude, i followed the steps in your tutorial but now i am pregnant... what went wrong?.....I am a guy.... so help maybe?
Wrong type of hammer XD
Now, I believe the correct thing to do is get a railroad spike and forge some tools to perform an abortion.
I don't think my mother would allow an abortion.... we are thinking about a shotgun wedding i will forge the rings.
Hello
Okay I'm impressed! leaf springs, files...now it's time to start collecting old wrenches.

I love this! your work is improving every time! I remember being your first subscriber! that was a sweet knife then and now a better axe!

dont grind the sharp end of an object against the direction of the belt, cos if you are unlucky and the belt is cut, you can get pretty hurt.
but great job

Due to the shape of the handle the weapon is hard to control, but over all , It will kill. Lol thanks for the share.
Cool project. So many people have asked me to make them one of these after seeing this vid . It's tempting!
I love these simple builds where you make an axe or a knife outta railway spikes and wrenches.
I want one of those for throwing. You make it look easy! I'm saving this video for future use, but I doubt it will look as good as yours😞
i love your videos becuase you dont cut anything off and make with the WHOLE thing!!! (unlike other youtubers)

Love this video, that tomahawk looks so great. awesome job
This is pretty awesome!
For some reason when it is sped up like this, it looks like 75% of your hammer strikes aren't hitting the wrench. haha!

Damn... and you can still use it as a wrench
everyone in the "The Walking Dead" need this thing! perfect weapon for the walkers.
What an awesome ax, congratulations for the work !!!
it seriously took me a while before i realized it was sped up. I was like "this dude is quick as hell and that metal is forming too quick"

+Miller Knives Such a cool and actually useful tool thanks for the tutorial congrats man
Ellis Goulding he has that now
Dang that's sweet. Really nice job.
Wow that's pretty cool forging there!
Any one else notice he hit the table more then he hit the Tomahawk?
you bounce the hammer off the anvil to not get tired as quickly and hit the work piece harder
Were you looking for reddit and ended up on youtube or something?
You don't care how to do it the right way?
Well, that says a lot.
Sisteelin: Yeah, I saw a LOT of missed strikes. He did get a good finished product, but there are less intensive ways to do it. He also needed a lot of strikes to upset the end.
Maori_Inigma Was it missed or just the frame rate of the camera...that's the likely culprit.
@ 1:37 that's a pretty neat belt sander, did you make it?
(if not what are the specs, brand, etc. thanks!)
outstanding piece of work
I love how you did that it was cool!
A noob here, would you need to harden the steel again or can you leave it the way you bought it? Miller Knives
thanks, will first try this with smaller wrenches until I spend money on a big one, haha.
to sum it up for myself, you re-heat treat the wrench after everytime you hammer on it?
Miller Knives
okay, thanks! I'm all hyped to get to work tomorrow, hahaha
+Miller Knives you should make a spear head from a wrench
you would need to harden it again because after forging the metal becomes softer and the previous heat treat of the wrench is ruined
That came out awesome. I have to ask if you forge welded a piece on the edged side. Almost looks like an addition. Beautiful work.
He had to have that’s what I came here to ask as well.
Such a good idea!! Congratulations
wow ! nice to see these blade making techniques.
wich size of wrench did you use for this proect. a do you know the closest one in metric?
It showed 1 5/8" which is about 4.2cm
its about a 41mm wrench
41.562mm
was additional material added for the flat side ?
looks like he welded on material, makes it useless as an axe.
+phogelbice nope, don't think so. the end of the wrench was drawn out and forged, i.e. hammered, flat...
"Hi mate. I just folded it on to its self and forge welded it" . This is the reply he left on another comment
How do you figure? I've got a 1000 year old Viking axe here. Guess how the edge was put on? It was forge welded.
That was the standard way of making one before about 1900 when steel (vs iron) became available in large quantities.

Great idea, nice job
You must've welded on some more metal for the blade at some point. Is there really enough material there to draw it out that much?
+Miller Knives Oh, thanks. I want to try to make one of these. Also, nicely done. I love the way yours turned out.
Comrade qa
can i buy one?
Definitely would like one
Nah laddie, yer gonna have to make it like me ol' gaffer did when I was a wee lad down in the mines
nice work you are a good craftsman I wish to be like you making weapons
this is straight up awesome
But does it run Minecraft on low at 30fps?

Miller hatchets doesnt have the same bounce to it.
That's one fine axe. Awesome.
That is a _beautiful_ Tomahawk! Looks a helluva lot better than the Ones made by other people.
wooow , awesome work! , after converting tools into weapons, will we begin to turn weapons into tools? ;)
One could argue that weapons are already tools ;)

Not that sure cause of European standard, but seems being the one sized for moped's exhaust nut.
Where can you see that?
You can see the size of the wrench at 3:05 of the video.
