Can't believe i'm just now seeing this. What a piece of Art. From the handle to the blade and spike it's amazing. Also a pleasure to watch it being made
Beautiful work, love the repurposing of old steel. I'd like to do this but dread the idea trying to forge it out by hand with the little skill I have. Out of curiosity what ended up going wrong with the first handle?
I've forged a hatchet out of a ball pein and found that drifting the eye any larger can make the cheeks quite thin. It depends on the hammer head, but there isn't very much material to drift.
I want so much to learn what you are doing. wish you could explain how you are heat treating and at what temperatures and for how much time. I Subscribed anyway hoping you could make a remake of this video and put in descriptions for people like me to learn how to do this correctly . Your videos are great !
There are a lot of resources that you can find online about the proper heat treat and tempering temperatures for each metal that you’re wanting to work with. Remember that different metals have different heat treatment recommendations. They’re usually similar, but they can vary depending on what you want to do. If you really wanna get into stuff like this, there are a lot of resources that you can find online. Largest hurdle that I’ve found was having the space to do it, having the tools to do it, and not being somewhere where all the noise will piss off your neighbors.😂 unfortunately for me I can’t get over any of those hurdles where I currently am lol.
So - question: The neck of the handle of a ball-peen hammer seems a bit fine for the use an axe would get - I've cracked BP handles by not being careful-enough with them. > Have you had any problems with that (I've never made an axe that didn't end up getting thrown) - ?
Все понравилось, но проушина узкая надо было расширить, ручку лучше как на томагавке без клина, и термообработка, закалить надо было только лезвие, а так форма красивая респект 👍
Super cool brother.
Thanks brother!
This is exactly the blade and spike shape I have for a future project, well executed!

It looks like a pirate’s boarding axe but so very awesome to see how you made that nice work
One of the coolest axes i have seen. Love it.
Turned out great! That's actually one of the things I'm planing to do, only by hand, don't have a press, yet!
Good job! Subbed
Awesome!! Get you a coal press when you do. Thanks for subscribing!
It's nice to hear work being done. It adds to the job at hand
What was the stuff you sprayed in it to turn it black?
Cold bluing solution, it's usually used on gun parts to protect the metal against rusting.

Subbed.
It looks like a bluing solution. Could also be a oil based paint in a spray. Although looking at the end product, I’m betting on a bluing finish
I can’t believe with all the videos and creators I’ve watched I’m just now seeing this and you. That is a fantastic piece and build. Great job!!!
Thanks so much 😊
Work of art.damn good job.
Fine, fine work!
Gorgeous ❤
Awesome build! Great video!

I love the disc sander made out of a fan motor I new i saved that for a reason thank you.
What a great transformation, we'll done.
Other than pie I think that's probably the best use for a pumpkin .😂
Axe be lookin' hella dope, @CurtisHaaland!
That is pretty badass
Really cool!
Thanks Dylan!
I really want to stitch up a collar, and sheath for that. Wow. Just amazing work.
Absolutely beautiful
Impressive, VERY impressive ‼‼‼👍👍👍
Muy lindo trabajo!!
Very good build and really good video! You made it enjoyable to watch, Thankyou 🙂
Wow, thats awesome
Gorgeous!

That's a badass axe.
This exactly what I want
Great video! Love watching all your stuff man! Hope to buy a knife one day (If I can find one in stock). Thanks!
Thanks Willard! I appreciate that. I really enjoy making these videos.
I would love to have one like it it's absolutely bad ass.
Nice work
This is really helpful to the sub humans that are currently buying up all the zombie knives!!!!!
Nice job.
This is really awesome. I'm gona try to forge one. What do you use for blackening the steel???
Thanks! Do it! I use birchwood Casey super blue
Very nice
Beautiful 👍
Very cool.
So did you heat it twice to temp, let it cool and then heat it a third time and then quemch in water?
Beautiful work, love the repurposing of old steel. I'd like to do this but dread the idea trying to forge it out by hand with the little skill I have. Out of curiosity what ended up going wrong with the first handle?
Thank you! Ya I love those old USA made hammers. The hang was loose and the top of the handle was broken.
Man i with i had a power hammer. Though as a hobbyist, i couldn't justify that kind of a purchase.
I personally would have drifted the eye a bit bigger.

Curtis, what size and brand of power hammer are you using in this video?
It’s an old Kinyon style power hammer I got from Burt Foster.
could you have used the vinegar & steel wool wood stain trick to get all of the handle blackened?
Sure, but it's not as dark, tactile or durable as a burnt finish.

Great 👏👏
Thanks!
Awesome ❤
I like it. I want 2. Lol
Nice. How much you charge to make one?
Perfect for the zombie apocalypse.
Could be a good production line item
Oooh brother wondering if ya could do a Dwarven axe or viking and wondering how much would ya sell it for me bubba that is awesome awesome work
How does one purchase said perfection?
Missing an eagle feather😊
Beautiful axe, just feel you should have opened up the eye for a sturdier handle.
So - question: The neck of the handle of a ball-peen hammer seems a bit fine for the use an axe would get - I've cracked BP handles by not being careful-enough with them.

Have you had any problems with that (I've never made an axe that didn't end up getting thrown) - ?
Nice, but i do think tossing it at a target is way more fun of a test with an axe type weapon. Cool one though.
man... I REALLY want to forge this, but I don't have a press or a pneumatic hammer... is it possible to do by hand? Beautiful work too, by the way.
@@KOTEC525 ABSOLUTELY. Might be good to get a friend to help with a sledgehammer doing the heavy lifting at the beginning
@@CurtisHaaland good point... holding it while hitting it with a short handled sledge would be a bear.
"What did you do this weekend?"
"Turned a $15 ball peen hammer into a $400 battle axe."
Good times
I need one of these for the zombie apocalypse
Maybe two!
Not ideal for that
Bitchin Rad. Had to add beautiful work my man.
Thanks so much!
Can I ask, why did you harden the entire axe? Didnt you want some flex if you are throwing that beast?
What weight?
I cant quite remember now

How can order an axe
Que medida tiene el martillo
I can’t quite remember!
Hello, very nice re purpose. But what did that poor pumpkin do to you?🤣🤣👍👍
If you were really my friend you would make me one.
Appropriately it's already drawn blood.
Did this in high school for a project w Fisk Knives, by hand.
Step one: turn on your vacuum cleaner
Looks like a cross between a small woodchopping hatchet and a naval boarding ax
Все понравилось, но проушина узкая надо было расширить, ручку лучше как на томагавке без клина, и термообработка, закалить надо было только лезвие, а так форма красивая респект 👍
Should have left the charcoal in it😂
I tried to do this once with an old ball peen head from my grandfather's tool box, and it just crumbled.
Didn't realise that ball pein and ball peen are the same thing.
wow amring
Thanks man!
@@CurtisHaaland ok you
This Is the lazy man's way to craft.🎉
Says the person with video game clips & ZERO craft on their channel
I always thought it was called a ball ping hammer 🤔
Shame that the handle is about 5 feet shorter than what is optimal
Peen 🤣
Axe ist Not for Battle
What steel do you think this is ?
@@michaeldbhawker3556 not sure exactly but probably something like 1045
Battle axe!
Küçük bir çekiçten böle bir baltanın çıktığına pek inanamıyorum doğrusu...
Great work man!
