Both masters are good in my layman's opinion. I preferred A at certain sections of the song, and I preferred B at certain sections of the song, somewhat depending on whether or not vocals were foremost in the mix. The one thing I sometimes found less than perfect with A is smearing of frequency bands (a muddiness) at times due to slightly heavy global reverb. With B, I sometimes found the vocal desiring a thicker presence. This impression is my first listen (on my studio monitors). I have a three-listen rule before I pass final judgement on songs. I'll listen again with studio headphones next. This was a great lesson with a great lab.
A very thoughtful response and non-biased. I love the 3 source rule too! In fact I tell all of my clients to listen back on at the least 3 sources before asking for revisions. (Huge time saver)
I find the A master clearer across the frequency spectrum and it seems to have a slightly wider stereo image. It's got a bit more life in it. But both are very good masters. Bear in mind I've only listened to it through my headphones. I elect A as the better sounding master.
You should do the same comparison A vs. B/C/D/E with the other BandLab Master options: Fire, Clarity, and Tape, just to hear the main differences between your master based on the options provided by BandLab. Just an idea.
A sounds brighter in my opinion. While B sounds a little compressed. I would prefer a mix of both, but certainly the algorithm sounds pretty good. Thanks for continually sharing insights like this.
I know this is a year old, but I have noticed that Bandlab leaves an outro tail. Most studio masters almost end a couple of milliseconds in the end. Mixing in cake walk then importing to Bandlab mixing some then mastering. Then re-import the song to cakewalk and use plugins to achieve the pro-level sound. I do this a couple of times just to get the creative sound. I think most people use the daws once and call it done when the process shouldn't stop with the first take. Anyways interest channel you have a new subscriber.
Master A is my preferred version. It has more clarity and openness. In comparison it feels as if master B has a blanket before the speaker. Glad to see that it is your work and not the algorithm.
i like master B more. It sounds a bit deeper. But for me it's a bit hard to spot the differences if we are not listening very carefully. It's like you said, in the end the master is like the final touches of art, you put your taste and preferences. Bandlab looks like a great tool if you want a quick and safe master
First let me say that this song is great and I enjoyed listening to it. Well written and performed. I favored Master A as it sounded more defined and articulate. Master B was good but there was a little something in Master A that you could feel. As a professional studio musician and a Cakewalk user for over 22 years I find that it is one of the best DAW's available. Band Lab has developed it into a world class program. Thanks for this video.
Also in A you can feel the strings, the guitars brighter. B I hear it as more in compressor, that is to say more compact, and A more bright. But they both really sound good, to everyone's taste. The A feels open, with that brightness, and the B a little more closed, not that brightness of the A. The B is also beautiful, but the A more defined as details on the instruments, more clarity. The Stereo in the voices of A is completely beautiful, incredible, open full of beauty. I think both are great mastering, bravoooo ¡¡¡¡
Great video. Algorithmic mastering will only continue to get better, sorry to say that for mastering engineers, just like desktop computers replaced manual typewriters. Here's a problem - you master a few songs online, only to come back later to see the algorithm changed, and the songs as an album will not work together. Indeed, Bandlab recently changed from three to four options. Further, I have found in my limited experience and with my moderate audio skills, one has to mix FOR the online mastering service to get the best result out of it; for example, seemed to me Bandlab (before moving to four options) was adding too much high end, and adding reverb on top of what the mix already had. They have file size limits, too, meaning long songs need not apply. Again, awesome, stuff, HSS: 10,000 subscribers is well-deserved and you will keep growing.
I’m a musician/singer/writer without an ear truly developed for mastering, yet. But I imagined the performance in a 3D space and could visualize the vocals moving closer to the audience when you switched to A. And of course, they seemed to move back more amongst the band when you switched to B. I thought A sounded better before seeing which master was yours. But I couldn’t tell a difference on my phone before I put on headphones.
Your Master is obviously the winner here, no doubt about it. With Bandlab's mastering thingy I always thought of it as a preset rather than an AI mastering algorithm.
I disagree, overall I found B to be the better of the 2. I thought A sounded better in certain places, and B in other places, but I found overall B was better.
@@Homestudiosimplifed , how close it came to a usable alternative????? Bandlab's mastering is definitely usable, there was no close about it, it is usable. I found your A mix to be better in certain places, and B mix was better in other places. Overall, if I was honest, I found the B mix to be better in the majority of the song.
Nice Mastering Sir. Very nice! Totally enjoyed this post. I’ve been a musician spending most of my time honing my guitaring skills in the last 2 years especially during covid. I usually just throw down a bassline, drums maybe a keyboard track type of idea to focus on playing. I’ll use something like Garageband. It’s the easiest way for now. It’s like throw a sandwich together now because I’m hungry attitude. I’ve just really spent most of my time getting my lead improvisation level up a level. When I build BTs after I decide on a song…I’ve noticed that perhaps I’m treating this the same way. I love great sound but I haven’t really spent enough time engineering it. I build my own backing tracks because I’m wanting to step out and play live. I think this post has really got me thinking now. My mediocre BTs aren’t cutting it. 😅And that evaluation alone today has been gold for me. It’s about patients. You just can’t rush anything too much. As a long lived projects tradesmen, I know this, it shouldn’t be any different. Many thanks! 🙏
I preferred the A master as it seemed to be more spacious, as if there was more air in and around the instruments. The vocals sounded better to me in master A. Great video!
A is a bit brighter, and the stereo image is a bit wider, brings the backup vocal forward in the mix. That's my pick Just listening in my truck. B is surprisingly good. Splitting hairs On these speakers.
Having not read the comments yet other than Pedro Jesus, im saying it's so subtle and my ears aren't as good as they used to be. I'd choose A as Robert's mix which makes B BandLab. BTW, thank you Robert for such a captivating way for us to listen to your lovely song! The blind shoot-out is just perfect for this! Very cool and smart vid, thank you!
Very similar sound. I think most would prefer A because it sounded more mainstream but I think the more toned down feel of B served this particular song better but it’s really splitting hairs. Awesome song btw
To me, both sound quite close, A is brighter, but the B sounds more put together. My preference by a small margin is the B, but I think this is just because of the lower end being emphasized.
A: seemed to have a slightly better forward play in the vocals and a bit sharper and more reverb. B: seemed to have more of a fat thicker sound, especially in the vocals and had a warmer more live sound. They were both good masters in the end.
Wow...both really good...I hear a bit more crispness & clarity in track A, which is my preference...B more bassy, but still, both at times really close....both good.
I liked A mix better - the snare sounded a little too smashed in B - the music had a hint of sidechain ducking relative to the vocals which helped isolate the vocals in B but I thought A sounded more natural and actually wider backing vocals. By half way through I knew which mix was which.
I really loved the song!!! I'm on break at work, listening on my 🤳🏻 phone. I can't give a proper opinion on A or B, until I listen at home with headphones 🎧. Thank you for the info. I'll check into that tool. Have a GREAT Labor Day weekend and be safe out there.
My band does mainly instrumental music and bandlab’s mastering has been ok for us (MUCH better than SoundCloud’s for damn sure). One thing though…Universal and (especially ) Clarity work well for us, but IMHO the other two options are terrible , especially “fire” which always sounds muddy
I listened twice with headphones (AT MTH30x) and monitors (Tannoy Reveal) and to my untrained ear, I not really tell any difference between A and B, but that I hope my journey my ear will become better trained.
Hey I have a question I record my vocals to leased already mastered beats should I put my vocals with the mastered best in bandlab mastering or only my mixed vocals thanks hope not dumb question
I share a lot of the same opinions as Chris Brisson and David Cruz. I did preferred A at times and B at times depending on the certain sections of the song. Overall, if I was honest, I preferred B mix. I would of loved to hear A vs the various settings of Bandlab's options (Univeral, Fire, Clarity, and Tape.). The thing that distracted me the most listening to this song was the out of tune vocals in a lot of places. It drug my listening attention away from the mixed to how bad the vocals are. This could have used fine tune pitch correction, and should of never gone to the mastering stage as is.
I guessed correctly which one you mastered. Most of it sounded pretty close but the telling difference was the loudest part near the end which didn't seem so big on the Bandlab master, I assume because the compression clamped down harder on that part.
I read some of the comments before listening, and so was trying not to decide on the basis of the majority view. However, I agree, A sits better, has more space in it, and to me B flattens it all too much and puts the vocal too upfront with a limited dynamic. Well done HSS!
