How Cantilever Air Ride Suspension Works (Rat Rod Part 3)

  • In this video I finish designing the air ride suspension on the front of the 47 Ford rat rod. It's a cantilever set up that is all custom built for the truck. It didn't go as smooth as I would have liked on the first try, but its starting to take shape. I'll take the design I drew in CAD on the last video and try it out on the truck but, sometimes what looks good on screen doesn't translate to the real world. In the end, I'm happy with how it all works out.
    Check out the first part of this air ride design here: • How to Build a Rat Rod...

    I live in Pa, finding anything worth while here is next to impossible. Need to drag my car hauler down to Alabama next time I go visit family there (once gas prices drop again). Been wanting to do a rat rod all my life. Done plenty of the shiny cars, time for something old, rustic, cool lol

      Yeah that would be the thing to do. The whole rat rod thing is so much less stressful than something shiny. In my opinion it makes it way more enjoyable!

    Very intrastine I'm watching how your doing your suspension compared to RAT ROD BOB he is building something similar but very diffrent he was explaining the Do's and Don'ts or why's and why not's on the suspension. Can't wait to see you get more done. I was thinking about building a small modle size car and work my way up. If I can build a small first then my helpers will know what my vision is, but it can always change as the build go's on.

    Interesting that you chose to add tube shocks to the airbag...shocks. Why double up on the front suspension? Do you find the tubes add something the airbags didn't already have? Really enjoying the series. Can't wait to see how it turns out. Having said that, that International you found in the first episode still haunts my dreams. What a beauty that was! Wonder what "expensive" meant to the ol' guy who owned it?

      Shocks and bags have two different functions. Maybe I should make a video about that 🤔

    First time making a comment. I have a suggestion for you: Check out Rat Rob Bob Builds. He is doing something really close to you you are trying to do with your front in, on his 47 Ford Rat Rod project.Like I said it is just a suggestion. I'm a recent subscriber, I like what I see so far. Can't wait for the next video.
    Later Bart.

    What size tube do you use and how do you know what gage of metal to use? Oh yeah, how do you find the angles for your frame?

    • @HardCoreFab
      @HardCoreFab  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1 3/4 .120 DOM is my go to tube. As for gage of metal and angles its a lot of experience.

      @@HardCoreFab Hi one beam go's across the frame then 2 beams go from the middle out and forward on a 45 degrees or 50 degrees what looks right to you , the trans or gearbox rear mount is just in front of the middle , I wish I could put up a photo , I put a double K in mine one faces forward and one faces backwards, O I know look at a 1936 to 39 ford frame . nice to talk to you mate.

    Not sure if you went over this in any of your videos but I watched the whole series and I’m looking to do a similar setup on my build. Did you need to do anything like a pan hard bar on the front to stop side to side play or is it pretty stable as is?

    • @HardCoreFab
      @HardCoreFab  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I did use a pan hard bar.
