  • Smokin' with the STEVE KAISER QUARTET
Longtime friend and guitar hero, Kevin Golden stocked the Steve Kaiser Quartet with pianist Lewis Porter and drummer Bob Meyer...Arangements were left up to Kevin, also. I dare not interfere.
I've never been disappointed hearing the Quartet in any of its incarnations. Sometimes it's a duo. Sometimes a trio. Always, they are in tune and astounding. Warm ups are hardly necessary.
It was a great honor to be standing in the middle of this great session taking video for my own purposes.
Three songs were cut in the two hour session. Only one of them, Dear Old Stockholm, was "commissioned" by me for my upcoming film, POSITIVELY PORCO.
Curiously enough, my film is NOT about Jazz or Sweden. It's about the fabulous Greenwich Village Folk music scene that surrounded and emanated from my grandfather's world famous cabaret Gerde's Folk City.
It was a restaurant when Mike Porco bought it and in 1960. He began hosting Folk and Blues musicians on his tiny stage after being convinced by Israel "Izzy" Young that it would be a boon in business for the Italian eatery. Izzy was right.
He and Mike Porco partnered for only five months. My grandfather then took the idea and ran a Folk and Blues club for the next 20 years without Izzy.
Izzy went back to the Folklore Center on MacDougal Street, the institution where EVERY musician hung out and shared music and everything Folklore.
In 1973, Izzy moved to the lovely city of Stockholm and continues to keep the flame alive to this day.
So, YES, the song is a round-a-bout way to pay tribute to Izzy and his adopted home, but in the end, we all get a fantastic recording of this beautiful traditional Swedish tune. You're welcome.
We did 3 takes of "Stockholm" and take 2 is the one that you'll find here. All three takes were stupendous and carried through and done with aplomb by the Quartet.

It's a fresh rendition, soon to be featured in a motion picture used to depict the Greenwich Village in the late 1950s scene when Jazz and the Beat poets ruled the streets.
In time, Folk and Blues musicians wrestled control if the coffeehouses in the Village and Gerde's Folk City hosted Blues legends and soon-to-be superstars on the same stage.
And for a time, Bob Dylan and John Coltrane and Muddy Waters and Miles Davis performed across the street from one another.
Enjoy the Steve Kaiser Quartet's version and envision a time when the masters, originators and innovators reigned supreme on the small little streets of one Italian and bohemian neighborhood in New York City.
