Why Off-Road / Overland Trailers Are Junk! Let Me Explain Why I'm Getting Rid of Mine.(click bait)

  • I took the time to build my own trailer from scratch. It took me about a month to build it using a retired military trailer and about $2500 in cash. Besides the hours and money, it was a pretty fun build. But soon after using it a few times the fairytale has ended. Its worked very well, just as well as I could have designed it. I designed it to be simple and particle and easy to pull behind nearly any vehicle. And it does that and everything I want it too. It's just a pain.
I use a lot more gas when I tow it behind my Land Cruiser. I can't open the tailgate on the Land Cruiser to get to my fridge when its connected. And loading and unloading it is annoying. Mainly because I have to keep it outside in the elements, and I do not want anyone to steal the stuff out of if.
I thought it would be more convenient. But it's become more of a hassle than its worth. It's far easier and better to just use my truck. Without the trailer connected to it, its way more convenient for the family and maneuverability is much better without a trailer connected to an off-road vehicle.

I love that you were honest and put clickbait right in the title. Always a fan of people who don't take themselves too seriously. :D

We use a 3/4 ton Silverado for our adventuring..it doesn't fit on some trails but for a fam of 5 full size overlanding it is 😜

Beautiful photography of this trailer (and your vehicles) in action in SE Utah (or thereabouts). This was an interesting and thorough video of one individual's complex relationship with a badass trailer that is "more than a pain" and believes that off-roading should not be a pain. Also, there may be other practicalities, projects, and considerations like garage space and the family unit. Good luck with your sale and future adventures. Thanks for sharing.
"I basically have a lot of crap" lol; sums it up!

I did sell it. New owner loves it. This is my second off-road trailer build. But it will be my last. We have a new setup and its been working pretty good so far. Thanks for watching.

@@thedirtlifesupreame I am pleased you have found something new that works better for your needs (noticed a LC setup in more recent videos). I understand what you mean about the difficulty of descending the White Rim (CanyondlandsNP) and other SE Utah locations with a trailer. These trailers are super-cool, which yours definitely was, but not really capable of busting through the primary issue: rock-crawling with trailers is pretty cumbersome

Even if you’re not using that trailer for over landing it would be handy to have around just for utility. Perfect for Home Depot or dump runs if you don’t own a pick up truck and drive an SUV.

Brother Awesome Trailer! I think independent suspension would of help you a lot! I see a lot of video getting rid of the Lunette Ring and getting a Lock-N-Roll Hitch! Can you spell the name of the gear box! Best Regards!

Do what you feel like fits your needs. I want to tow my Dirt bikes and Land Cruiser behind my truck. And then use the truck as a basecamp. The trailer just didn't fit the need anymore.

Hey buddy its definetly built to withstand war and keep going! But the empty weight is way to much for overland and then you put your needs it or on it its realy a hoss. But what most people dont consider the majority of thise trailers were pulled by a duece and a half military truck that could pull a freight train not a pickup etc so im sure it was work not fun for you. Im glad you sold it and i hope yall are happy with your new setup! Take care and Happy Trails to you and your family!

Agree that trailers impose some limits but those mil surplus trailers are big and heavy when they are empty. Something like 1300 pounds? That's not a good start.

Good video. I’m the opposite of you. I have a ram power wagon with 8lug 6.5. I’m interested in getting an m1101/1102 trailer simply for hauling more stuff and plus if I go camping for a few days and I want to go do a day trip I do t have to break down my whole camp just to move the truck when I have the tent/awning open etc. I can just unhook trailer and drive the truck.. how is it getting these registered to drive on the road?

      @thedirtlifesupreame  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, I liked it at first, but now that I want to haul my dirt bikes, it just doesn't make a lot of sense.

The shackles are not for recovery, they were used to sling load operations

Makes sense. Seems like they would work for a recovery situation as well. I never got around to testing it that way. Or I guess, I never got stuck and needed recovery with the trailer attached.

......are junk! Good clickbait title, didn't really say why it's junk. You did say it's just not for you. A title with that verbiage would of been more honest, but it's actually more about the views than the honest discussion. 👎

Kind of funny since I can say what I want, you know that whole constitutional amendment thing. You know #1, right. So I can say that I think they are junk.
