Velux Blinds - How to remove & Velux Product Recall - Velux Windows Can Spontaneously Shatter!

  • The information below is correct at time of writing - July 2021.
    There is a problem with some of the older Velux skylights, which causes the inner sheet of glass in the glazing unit to spontaneously shatter. Velux will replace any affected glazing for free, even if the windows are outside of the 10 year warranty period.
    I had five such windows which needed to be replaced, and this required that I remove the blackout blinds which were fitted to the windows prior to the work being done.
    I looked on TH-cam for a video showing how exactly to remive the blinds, and I couldn't find one. The official Velux one doesn't provide much detail, it simply states that you should 'unclip' them. It is, I believe, also related to the more modern, current design of blackout blinds being supplied for the newer window frames.
    It should therefore be noted that my video applies to an older window blind. The ones I show were fitted in around 2002.
    If you believe you may have some affected windows which are subject to this same product recall, you can find more information by following the link below.
    www.velux.co.uk/safety-warnin...
    I really hope that this video proves useful to someone.
    If you found my video helpful, please give it a like, and if you have any interest in old Land Rovers or vehicle restoration, then you may enjoy some of my other videos - the main subject of my channel is the restoration of Shorty, a 1965 Series IIA Land Rover.
    Many thanks for watching.

    Agree with all the above comments criticising Velux's uninformative video. Equal criticism should go to the other companies who simply provide a link to the Velux video. This is the only useful video I have found. Thanks.

    I watched this to help me remove my blinds but thanks to the video I learnt about the recall. My 4 large Velux windows were all affected. I contacted Velux and 2-3 weeks later an engineer came and fitted them all one morning. No cost, no mess. Thank you so much for making this video!

    Thank you so much for posting this video. You, sir, are an absolute star! That is the very kind of Velux blind I needed this information on. Great instruction and, as you have discovered, this is now the sole TH-cam video relating to uninstalling this blind. I found one on how to fit it but, considering it ‘clicks’ into place, I was concerned that when trying to remove it, I would break one of the fittings. What is also so very helpful is the information you’ve provided on the Velux recall. Brilliant. Many thanks again and best wishes from the Giant’s Causeway Coast of Northern Ireland. 😀👍☘️

    Wooow man I looked SO LOONG for a video showing how to get this damn thing out. Never would have figured it out without this video, thank you so much. Former tenant just left the blinder in the apartment and the people checking the apartment apparently just let her get away with it. Anyway it was soooo dirty and I've been trying for so long to replace it, now I finally got it off. Only thing left are the plastic things on the sides, not sure how to get these off

    A quick word of warning (to all watching this), not all Velux releases are the same. There are two types, the one shown here and another which I'd call a sort of 'horseshoe' shaped releases. These do not have a hole on either side, and just slide off towards you (probably like the man in the video you talk about). I'm not sure if and when Velux made those changes to the releases, but to make it difficult you cannot tell which is which from looking at them (with the blinds on them).
    Nice video, thanks for your explanation/demonstration.

    Thanks very much for that. The official Velux video does not explain how to get the cassette out at all and we were scratching our heads for a long time. Once we had seen your video and had seen that we had to get the right hand side out first and that it required a bit of force, we had the confidence to do it. Cheers.

    Thank you very much, sir! As you say, the Velux video(s) shows a bloke just breezing up to the unit, fiddling around at both ends, and it sort of pops off almost immediately. Which certainly isn't very helpful. But your video is spot on...now we have to see whether we can manage it (needs strong fingers). Thanks!

    • @tiredoftyres
      @tiredoftyres 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, have just managed it, with thanks again Rusty. The whole unit suddenly came out and whizzed across the room! Noticed that one of the little plastic knob thingies the unit slotted over at each side was different: while the one on the right was the same as yours so was the one on the left, ie no groove, unlike yours. Anyway, managed to get the new unit in just like in the Velux video, ie piece of cake (part 2, NOT the removal part). Exciting stuff!

      I have a window with no slot in the plastic mounting. I found from the replacement blind that there are non return tabs on the cassette. These can be reversed by pushing a thin blade in horizontally at the top of the tabs that the side rails slide into and then the blind comes away.

  • @moandmike3731
    @moandmike3731 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Excellent video. However, my Velux blind does not fit onto brackets with a hole in one bracket and a groove on the other bracket. It has two brackets without holes, which pull straight out to remove or insert the cassette, just like in the Velux video. Thus, it seems that newer Velux blinds improve on the old ones. They are now much simpler, but still require a lot of force to remove.
