I have been watching Formula 1 racing for over 60 years.
Have been to a number of 'live' races.
Having seen the likes of Jim Clark, Jack Brabham, John Surtees and Graham Hill race.
But I can safely say that Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are among the greatest F1 drivers I have ever seen in my life...

As of right now, Lewis is the greatest of all time. But undoubtedly, Max is marking his way to get close, even or even a better career overall than Lewis by the time he decides to hang up the Helmet.
It’s going to be interesting watching Max career no doubt. There’s quite a lot good Talent coming up as well.

@@joelserrano1298 Respectfully disagree. I think Lewis, though I dislike him as a person, is one of the greatest of all time. He lines up with Senna, Schumacher, Prost, Vettel and many others who have defined F1 greatness. There is no "greatest of all time" in F1. Even if Max breaks all records, as a Max fan, he is only ever going to be "one of the greatest", never "THE greatest". No such thing can exist in an ever developing sport as F1.

@wimpie willemse I am indeed a Dutch Max fan....but will never call him scum by his name, even though he had the best car of the last 7 years...as a driver you also have to live up to it and that has so he did (respect for that). Only he lost the last shred of sympathy with me when he drove off Max last year at Silverstone and then waving the English flag lavishly while Max was in hospital under the scan after those 50 G forces on his body, rightly so Max said he would never do such a thing, especially not because at the time it was not yet certain whether Max had suffered any ill effects after that huge blow... luckily that turned out not to be the case.
And who is the best driver? I am now 72 years old and watched F1 at Zandvoort (until 1985)...have seen them all come and go, famous names like Emerson Fittipaldi, Elio di Angelis, of course Niki Lauda and also right in front of me (I happened to be there in the dunes) the burning car of F1 driver Roger Williamson, now (50 years later) those images still haunt me .... you see someone burning alive there 50 meters away, good one too F1 driver who tried to save him...why am I citing this example?
Hamilton could also have stopped his car after the crash with Max and asked how Max was doing, just take Sebastian Vettel who recently stopped next to a driver to ask how he was doing.. so I have every sympathy for him lost.

Just ask Nico Roseburg who led the first half of the season by a huge margin yet only managed only one win in the second half and even finished second in the last race because Lewis was brilliant. What disgusts me is the fact hoe people easily discredit Max's super effort.....
The real problem isn't the fact that rules weren't followed, the problem is Rules had Multiple INTERPRETATIONS !!!!
In my opinion, rules should be fool proof and should not be open ended and have various interpretations

  • @MikeAmsterdan02
    @MikeAmsterdan02 2 ปีที่แล้ว +66

It is always difficult to compare drivers by the great actions they make. Is one overtake greater than the other ? It is easier to rank the drivers based on the mistakes they make…….
I understand perfectly that Lewis fans focusses on the last 5 frustrating minutes of the season. To speak with Toto; “ WHAT WAS THAT ?” and why do these guys speak to the “referee” in the first place? In no other sport it happens like that ! And on a different note; how can you negotiate with the “referee” on the punishment ?
But the season lasted 22 races and a few sprint races, so about 40 hours of racing.
By going through the whole season again which was greatly done in this documentary. It is clear that Lewis lost his championship on several tracks during the season; Imola, Monaco, Turkey and the one standing out; BAKU ! ; If we had an identical season with all the weirdness, but Lewis didn’t make the blunder of pushing the wrong buttons on the restart he would have been champion one race before Abu Dabi.
On the other hand Max made far less point-costing and serious mistakes. The points he lost where mainly caused by misfortune (flat tyre) and two times by a Mercedes kicking Max out of the points (Silverstone and Hungary).
Wrapping up; Max was a better driver than Lewis in 2021 and therefor a more deserved champion.

lewis lost the championship in the last 5 mins of the season due to MASI ans MASI alone. But that doesnt matter anymore because its in the past. Max is on course to get his first non-controversial championship.

As I said it is perfectly understandable Lewis fans focusses on the last 5 minutes of the championship. So they can ignore the mistakes he and Mercedes made on various occasions on various races.
If all the races occurred exactly as they did but the order of the races would have been different, e.g. Baku would have been the last, no-one would have looked at Masi but at Lewis his blunder.
That is why you should look at the whole season not just one decision by one official, making the whole championship controversial only because it was the last event of the championship.

Had the situation been reversed Toto would have been singing Masi's praises by stating how great he did for finishing under race conditions. In effect Mercedes had no disadvantage from his choice. The fact that there was a safety car and as leader he couldn't pit put them at a disadvantage for sure, but that happens all the time and is just part of the sport. Had the race been a few laps longer the same thing would have played out and Mercedes could say nothing else, but that's bad luck. The fact that Masi chose to use his discretion (within the rules) to speed up the process to finish under racing conditions as was agreed by all the teams at the start of the season is commendable. The only one who would really have a bone to pick was the nr 3 who did have cars between him and nr 2 at the restart. Having a documentary about this year with only British and likely biased pundits doesn't really make an objective look back, but it was still nice to watch. In the end, over the course of the season, Max made fewer mistakes, had more bad luck and won more races, so a deserved winner. Mercedes when they were on top always said, we love the challenge etc, but when it came down to it, they showed themselves disgraceful losers.

    • @BIO2323
      @BIO2323 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Totally disagree here.
Firstly Max got away with the same thing in Brazil by leaving the track to regain and maintain a lasting advantage. Also, Lewis didn't just choose to go that way for fun he was forced off track yet again, he couldn't rejoin the track safely without cutting the corner.
Secondly, Merc could not have pitted and risked losing track position when it was likely the race would end under SC. Merc expected rules to be followed and so blaming them for not anticipating this is bonkers. As for the VSC there was no reason to risk a pit when Lewis was quicker on older tyres anyway. Pitting when you don't need to is invoting extra risk, the pit could've gone wrong and cost him lots of time.
Masi was bullied in to breaking the rules and he caved in to the pressure it's as simple as that.

Don't mention that steward lineup for Abu Dhabi was very suspicious. Two of the four stewards have admitted in the past that they favour Hamilton. That is why Hamilton wasn't summoned to the stewards room after blocking Mazepin in FP2 as that would have been his third warning and he would get 10 place penalty because of that. In Brazil he got to change his illegal rear wing outside Parc Ferme and therefore avoided pit lane start at the sprint race, even though the rules clearly state that changing rear wing is parc ferme rule break. Abu Dhabi first lap, Hamilton should have given the place back, but of course no investigation neccesary. I will not even go into the details but just say: British GP - disgraceful penalty for obvious reasons. There was such a bias and pressure on FIA for Lewis to win his 8th title, fortunately the better man won it.
Oh and as you mentioned bullying into breaking the rules:
      1) No rule was broken
      2) "Michael please no safety car, it interferes with the race"

      4) "He overtook him under safety car"
      5) "Michael this isn't right"

What nonsense to perpetuate this myth that Masi "handed" the championship to Max. Did you not notice, Sky, that at the start of that last lap in Abu Dhabi Max was still, um, behind Lewis? He had one single lap to overtake a 7 time champion, without DRS. Try it. Foregone conclusion? Did you not notice that earlier in the same race it took Hamilton multiple laps to get past Perez, despite much fresher tires and with DRS? Did you not notice earlier in your own documentary that Lewis was right behind Max and on much fresher tires at the end of the race at COTA, and yet couldn't get by him? Not exactly a foregone conclusion is it. What Masi did was the only thing that *wouldn't* automatically hand the title to anyone.
Dear Sky, the championship is counted over a whole season. Imagine if indeed Masi had protected Lewis and let him finish under the safety car, but the races had been run in a different order. Then would you say that Lewis was only a lucky champion because Max's tire blew up in Baku? That Lewis threw away the title at Imola but only got it back because of an incredibly lucky red flag? That Lewis won a tainted title because of Valtteri's bowling expedition in Budapest? That -- Silverstone?

I have been watching, following and visiting F1 races for over 30 years. First and foremost, I am a fan of the sport. As a Dutchman, of course I am a Max fan to. This 2021 season was epic in every way possible. Yes, there were a lot of controversial decisions being made by the race director and his marshals the whole season. Quiet a few in Hamilton's favor, maybe just as many in Verstappen's favor, so no need to keep on whining about that. In the end i feel the outcome served the way the 2021 season was right. Mercedes was the 'better' constructor in 2021 and Verstappen was the 'better' driver.
And i think the both of them, Max & Lewis, Toto & Christian and the whole Red Bull & Mercedes teams have saved Formula 1 as a spectator sport. Lets be honest, the dominance of Mercedes the past 7 years made it a bit boring. Now they turned it into a vibrant and exciting thing to watch again. And that, is a good thing.

Masi had a chance to do it right, the last 10 seconds of lap 56 were the opportunity to let the lapped cars through. That was when the marshals were behind the guardrails. If the message “lapped cars are allowed to overtake the safety car” had been sent out anywhere in those 10 seconds, there would not have been any rule broken. Masi made sure that at least his mistake did not influence the outcome of the championship.
Toto Wolff has no right to speak about what Red Bull said to Masi over the radio. In my opinion, his message about “No safety car, interferes with our race” when one of the Alfa’s stopped on track, is one of the worst radio messages in F1 ever. He literally asks the race director to put Lewis’ title above the safety of marshals. It is so ridiculous, he should be banned from F1 if you ask me.
Mercedes and Hamilton made more mistakes than Red Bull and Verstappen over the whole season. That cost them the championship. Not the fact that a race director had to make an almost impossible call in a specific 10 seconds of an extremely complicated and stressful moment of a grand prix under the most extreme time pressure.
Instead of admitting that they made more mistakes, Toto chose to destroy a good man’s career to make himself look less of a loser. To me he is the worst loser in sports history. Lewis on the other hand was one of the best losers I have ever seen. To lose the title in such a way and then walk up to Max to congratulate him, that was huge. I hope he one day wins his title number 8!

I agree that Redbull and Max definitely deserved the title but honestly for the life of me just wont understand that final race. In my understanding (which may not be correct) masi either has to let all lapped cars through which would mean there wasn’t enough time to get the last lap underway and it would finish under safety car or let no lapped cars through and have that final lap of racing. How on earth is it fair to only let the cars between lewis and max through makes utterly no sense. So max didn’t have to worry about Sainz behind him and Sainz never got the opportunity to attack which if all lapped cars were let passed couldve happened. You seem like a good fan and i just wanna know why what happened at Abu Dhabi wasn’t wrong.

    • @nylzmotion

@@aarian03 You are completely right that letting only 5 cars through should not have happened. It should have been all cars, and earlier. I think Masi realised that and found a way that got closest to correcting his error. If you only look at the championship outcome, it is indeed unfair that Verstappen does not have to look in his mirrors to see what Sainz does. But realistically, Sainz would not have been able to follow verstappen closely through the first few corners on his old hard tires. So that is what I meant by “not influencing the championship result”. I think we all have to agree that it was wrong how it went. I just do not see anything deliberately done wrong. Aarian Exactly...the problem will always be trying to see justice with those Max fans.....they simply wanted to be champions at all costs, just like the pilot himself, they are hypocritical in their comments trying to invert values being disrespectful to Toto, Mercedes and Lewis.

@nylzmotion Friend, you forgot to mention in all your hypocritical defense, the events before AbuDhabi, so you have the slightest chance to believe this nonsense that you didn't do it on purpose. Masi simply forgets that he could have run the red flag to be fair. Because in Jeddah he gives Verstappen every opportunity to get back to the front when he does, making it possible to change his tyres. I won't even comment on the BreakTest and the non-punishment as required by the regulation. Without that "Oh it wasn't on purpose" bullshit

    • @nylzmotion
      @nylzmotion 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@paulovargas3812 Well, I do not think we will agree on this. But if Masi was deliberately trying to make Verstappen champion, don’t you think he would have made Hamilton give back the position after he cut the corner on lap one? About the red flag that gave Verstappen a free stop in Jeddah, Hamilton got two of those very handy red flags in his favor; Silverstone and Imola. And looking at the crash they had in Jeddah, there was a lot going on there. Verstappen was sneaky on the position he chose to give the place back, Hamilton said he didn’t understand what was going on, to then add that he immediately thought of Spa 2008… (so he knew exactly what was going on). But worst of what happened there was Verstappens break-test. He got away with a very light penalty there… (Like Lewis got away with a light penalty in Silverstone).
It was an extreme season. That ended in extreme matters. But given all the controversies on both sides, with various penalties on both sides I stand with the fact that there is nothing that suggests that Masi deliberately made Verstappen champion. But as I said, I do not expect us to agree!
Let’s hope for another great season!

20:24 some British Bias for you. Engine turned to 11. I know it is within the rules and Merc was smart to exploit it. But engine penalties are there to reduce the number of engines you use from a cost (more level playing field) and environment (yeah I know…) perspective. So it was a solid drive but not really brilliant

Nice documentary. It's a shame at the end it shows to be huge Mercedes biased. We have a 1,5 hour documentary like this, about one of the greatest and most epic F1 seasons ever, plus title contender battles ever, end than we are complaining about the race did not end behind the safety car? People, this is plain crazy. Masi wanted us to give a race finish with racing cars, not ending with a slow turtle parade. That's what this whole sport is about, racing, and that is what the 2021 season gave to us. Big thanks to Masi. If this race would have ended behind the safety car, the whole season would have collapsed into huge disappointment to millions of people like a jelly pudding

As the documentary progresses less former drivers are in the conversation. I wonder why. We do get a constant stream of “journalists” giving their extremely biased opinion. The whole thing is a bad example of “losers consent”. Hamilton did give a great example of how it’s done. Once you lose, you praise your opponent, thank your team for their efforts and get off the stage to concentrate on your next season. A fantastic sportsman.

British are an odd bunch.... They don't show the end of Abu Dhabi... Basically Sky Sports takes you through this whole season and then at the end the commentators cry bull$#!t and show a news clip of Michael Masi getting fired. Damon Hill was the only one pointing out that it had to be decided on track. It was the world championship.
And this idea that Lewis was entitled to keep his advantage (his one goal as Toto put it) on a safety car restart goes against decades of tradition. Strange ending from a supposed news entity.

This was a great documentary but i cant believe they didnt end it with last racing lap of the season. I get that this is a British orientated show and they wanted to emphasize Lewis lost the last race due to the race directors decisions, but common man, Max still had to make that overtake with one lap to go and they didnt even show it. Still a great watch but that was just weak.
