this is a nice trick. I wanted to make sure it works in all cases, so I translated the trick into math and I get: ab = 100*(a+b-100) + (a-100)(b-100) ab = 100a +100b - 10000 + ab - 100a - 100b + 10000 ab = ab seems good to me. cheers
+Ghnimi Farah , The trick explained in the video uses individual digits instead of the numeric value of the number. This means that the equation changes from; 98x97 to; (90 + 8) x (90 + 7). You can expand this further into; (9x10 + 8) x (9x10 + 7). Having said this, we can look at the trick. He says he uses a base 100 to which his numbers deviate from. The number 98 is 2 short of a 100, so we can say it's -2 away form 100. If the number was 102, it would be 2 away from a 100. That we use the - symbol is important as it tells us if we're a bit short or not. And, of course, 97 is -3 away from a 100. The trick compiles the answer back into digits. So we need to take the decimal placement into account when calculating the answer. In the video this isn't done, because you don't have to when you're using pen and paper. After all, you can write digits anywhere you want. So, lets look at the equation used in this video; 98x97=? I'm going to replace the two numbers with their own variable a and b. a = 98, b = 97. 98x97 = a x b = ab The first two digits of the answer is, 98 - 3, which is also 98 + -3. The -3 is the result of taking the number 97(which is b) and subtract the base(a 100) from it. Then we add this to 98(which is a) So, the first few digits are a + (b - 100). Note that the brackets aren't needed, but they show you what belongs to what as we reason our way through this problem. If b - 100 results in a negative number, then the + becomes - instead. This happens to be the case in our example. We also need to take decimal placement into account. The video shows us that the first digits are in the hundreds. So (a + b - 100) needs to be multiplied 100 times to get the answer in the right decimal place. We now have; 100*(a + b - 100). The next step in the trick is the find the last two digits. He explains that we get them by multiplying -2 with -3, to get 6, and then add them to the other digits. Well, -2 and -3 are the result of 98-100 and 97-100, these are multiplied together. So this becomes; (98-100)*(97-100) And now with variables; (a-100)*(b-100) This we add to our earlier found digits. I'll remove the unnessecary symbols. We now have; 100(a + b - 100) + (a - 100)(b - 100) And that's it. Thats when the trick does. Just because it's on the internet doesn't make it true. So we need to check if it's mathematically consistant. To check if ab indead equals 100(a+b-100) + (a-100)(b-100) we use some algebra. step 1: write equation ab = 100(a+b-100) + (a-100)(b-100) step 2: distribution law ab = 100a + 100b - 10000 + b(a - 100) - 100(a - 100) step 3: repeat one more time ab = 100a + 100b - 10000 + ab -100b -100a + 10000 step 4: organize variable groups ab = 100a -100a +100b -100b -10000 +10000 +ab step 5: add variable groups ab = 0a +0b +0 +ab step 6: remove unneeded math expressions ab = ab QED Since ab indead equals ab, we can say this trick works which all numbers in all cases. However, since it's based on using 100 as base, it works best if you use numbers close to 100. I hope this helps. Happy new year.
This method does invariably work. What he's effectively saying is this: Let A and B be two numbers less than 100 and let An = 100 - A and Bn = 100 - B. Then A* B = (100 - An) *(100 - Bn) = 100*100 - 100*Bn - 100*An + An*Bn = 100(100 - Bn) - 100*An + An*Bn = 100*B - 100*An + An*Bn = 100(B-An) + An*Bn. Since both A and B are less than 100, 100(B-An) is a number less than or equal to 9800, that's why he places the result of 100(B-An) as the two most significant digits. Since A and B are symmetrical, you also have A*B = 100(A-Bn) + An*Bn.

Technically, it works for all numbers under 100, but it is easy to use this trick for numbers between 90 and 99. In fact, if you know how to do multiplication for 10-19, you can calculate 80-89 fairly quickly too However, anything lower than 80 is a bit too hard since you will be doing a 2 digit multiplication on the last step, which is not very easy
98x56=5488 bcuz 100 minus 98 Is 2, And 100 minus 56 Is 44, so now u cross subtract. 56 minus 2 Is 54 And 98 minus 44 Is 54. And I'll say the next step in another comment
In the second its even easiee, because its basically 9500 - 95 = (1 unit deducted as if you multiply by 100). By 98 will be -190 = 9310, and so on. etc etc.

+vinod patel It can be for all numbers under 100, but if you were to do 5*5 then you have to multiply 95 by 95, so it will be easier to only do from 99 to 90 but works for all numbers below 100
dane dani 65 x 87 65= 100 - 35 87= 100 - 13 65-13 = 87-35 = 52 put down 5200 because we are working with 100 35 x13=455 now 5200+455=5655 check 65×87=5655 system still works but slows down when you get smaller and smaller numbers than 100 being multiplied together.
Is there a way to simplify the math when the numbers aren't in the 90's? For example: 63x 47 you end up having to multiply 37x53 which defeats the purpose to begin with.
So like you used 2 and 3 to subtract the numbers and you gave us the numbers to subtract them by but let's say we come across something g like this at school or work and we need to use it how do you know what numbers to subtract it by
But what if there's a number 24 or 23 will this formula work too then we must think our base first and it will not work in 5 sec so pks make a video of my question
Seems to difficult, but the way explains it id straight forward. I tired to do 42*46, It came to 1932. I managed to work out the 32. But I couldn't work out the 19. Does anyone know how to do it.
This is where this method comes from: 98 x 97 = (100 - 2) x (100 - 3) ==> This is where the -2 and -3 comes from! = 100 x 100 - 3 x 100 - 2 x 100 + 2 x 3 Note: -2 x -3 = 2 x 3. Factor 100, our "base" in this problem, from the first three terms: = 100 x (100 - 3 - 2) + 2 x 3 = 100 x (100 - 2 - 3) + 2 x 3 This last one seems obvious and may even seem pointless at first but I wrote this out to show the method. We can either do 98 - 3 or 97 - 2 to obtain 95 and this is because it doesn't matter whether we subtract 2 or 3 first from 100. Get this? = 95 x 100 + 2 x 3 = 9,500 + 6 = 9,506 I like using these "base" shortcuts. After some practice you can start to do these pretty fast! You are free to pick a base that is convenient for the problem. A base of 100 was convenient for this problem. Enjoy!
In response to your question of when to put zeros, the amount of zeros to put is determined by the amount of zeros present; for instance if it is in hundreds then you will have the figure two decimal places to the right or to the left if you were dividing

So, lets look at the equation used in this video; 98x97=?
I'm going to replace the two numbers with their own variable a and b.
a = 98,
b = 97.
98x97 = a x b = ab
The first two digits of the answer is, 98 - 3, which is also 98 + -3.
So this becomes; (98-100)*(97-100)
And now with variables; (a-100)*(b-100)
This we add to our earlier found digits. I'll remove the unnessecary symbols. We now have;
100(a + b - 100) + (a - 100)(b - 100)
And that's it. Thats when the trick does. Just because it's on the internet doesn't make it true. So we need to check if it's mathematically consistant.
To check if ab indead equals 100(a+b-100) + (a-100)(b-100) we use some algebra.
step 1: write equation
ab = 100(a+b-100) + (a-100)(b-100)
step 2: distribution law
ab = 100a + 100b - 10000 + b(a - 100) - 100(a - 100)
step 3: repeat one more time
ab = 100a + 100b - 10000 + ab -100b -100a + 10000
step 4: organize variable groups
ab = 100a -100a +100b -100b -10000 +10000 +ab
step 5: add variable groups
ab = 0a +0b +0 +ab
step 6: remove unneeded math expressions
ab = ab
QED
Since ab indead equals ab, we can say this trick works which all numbers in all cases. However, since it's based on using 100 as base, it works best if you use numbers close to 100.

plz tell me how to choose a base number like 10, 20 ,50, 100. as I tried different numbers, the answer was wrong.
i Ain"t throwing my calculator anywhere.Even though i am a calculator myself.
Chu
Sreejan Shrestha u sure?
*MISLEADING!!! The description lies, and this only works with a handful of numbers!*
98x94, according to your theory it should be 9206, but the actual answer is 9212
+Luc Chermanne Check your math.
98 x 94
-2 ... -6
98 - 6 = 92
-2 x -6 = 12
Answer via this method: 9212.
Right theory 98*94=9212 No doubt
You're right, I screwed up at some point. It works
Luc Chermanne Happens bro.
This is nice trick and easy to understand for everyone.......thanks sir.
98x97=9506 not 8556
+FlexBo who said it was 8556
are you stupid?
Just no.
its right
I thought this is called VEDIC mathematics
Is there a way to simplify the math when the numbers aren't in the 90's? For example: 63x 47 you end up having to multiply 37x53 which defeats the purpose to begin with.
9506
guys this only works easily when it is between 90 and 100
Can we done also 56×78
thats why i hate maths
math is the best thing ever I love math..... I wish math was a person I would hug him until he is dead
Natnael turn :) me too
Natnael turn i hate maths as well -_-
everyone hates maths except for maths teachers
Ethan Goeske No, most teachers act like they like it but they usually become a teacher for the money...
What the hell
Hes Helping u To do Times and hell is a bad word
finally something helpful. thanks for not filling youtube with crap
this only work from 91 to 99.
i was thinking same, u r ri8
Yeah, he said numbers naire 100
calculators are much faster...
Hey I got this recommended. After 14 years. Nice vid. I was born in 2007.lmao
Actually how can you get positive 5 in the second multiplication, i am must certain its 9406 then again i am dumb
Hi can you please make a vid on long division estimate sum check out
hi,this trick is to multiply numbers below 100, but till what number is it 91, or 90, 60? please clarify that.
very nice, i wanna know what's the software or like that something... in which you wrote with the pencil or anything else
Thanks
Thank you . U made me to learn easy method of multiplication. I wish that u keep still more videos
So like you used 2 and 3 to subtract the numbers and you gave us the numbers to subtract them by but let's say we come across something g like this at school or work and we need to use it how do you know what numbers to subtract it by
I'm not the smarter so if it's stupid question I'm sorry i just don't get it
This guy is so SMART MATH IS SO EASY for me now thank you 😃😃👌
I still dont understand the -3 × -2 how to you get the 06?
But what if there's a number 24 or 23 will this formula work too then we must think our base first and it will not work in 5 sec so pks make a video of my question
can you give an idea of after50&below70
Seems to difficult, but the way explains it id straight forward. I tired to do 42*46, It came to 1932. I managed to work out the 32. But I couldn't work out the 19. Does anyone know how to do it.
which software do you use to write this type of quiz problem????
What if the give is 57x68 i will do -3 on top of 57 and -2 on top of 68 is this right
Thx for share a good trick .. Could I ask u ? this this way can use with number under 90? how to do ... thx you ^^
How you do 57×38= ?
I'm still confused on how much I have to subtract from each number
If it is in + so what to doo sir please telll
My new favorite math teacher!
This is where this method comes from:
98 x 97 = (100 - 2) x (100 - 3) ==> This is where the -2 and -3 comes from!
= 100 x 100 - 3 x 100 - 2 x 100 + 2 x 3
Note: -2 x -3 = 2 x 3.
Factor 100, our "base" in this problem, from the first three terms:
= 100 x (100 - 3 - 2) + 2 x 3
= 100 x (100 - 2 - 3) + 2 x 3
This last one seems obvious and may even seem pointless at first but I wrote this out to show the method. We can either do 98 - 3 or 97 - 2 to obtain 95 and this is because it doesn't matter whether we subtract 2 or 3 first from 100. Get this?
= 95 x 100 + 2 x 3
= 9,500 + 6 = 9,506
I like using these "base" shortcuts. After some practice you can start to do these pretty fast! You are free to pick a base that is convenient for the problem. A base of 100 was convenient for this problem.
Enjoy!
How tho cuz on last digits what if u have more than 10 on the minuses then the answer is wrong
Hey thanks it's a great technique for calculating the no within a seconds,great job......
Hey dude. You've got awesome video. Big thumbs up for! Keep it up.
where i get the power numbers what they do?
How do i multiply 63x67 by this method
WOW, how do if there is a zero to go or not?
In response to your question of when to put zeros, the amount of zeros to put is determined by the amount of zeros present; for instance if it is in hundreds then you will have the figure two decimal places to the right or to the left if you were dividing
Thanks
if there is a zero on the end I hope you would be able to just do it mentally
How do you get the first digit of the answer
Oh my god this is awsome it easier than any math trick!! I subscribed by the way because of this video only.
how do you know if u have to - with 5,1,2,3 can u please explain that to me:)
I assume that this method doesn't work for just any number as it seems to concern only integers nearest to 100.
Thats what i was thinking.....
i think it can be any two numbers that are in the same ten's place, u know?
90-99
80-89
70-79 and so on
Awesome keep going . it certainly helped me to perform easy calculation
wow you just made me 10x faster at doing times thank you
plz also help out fr 3 digit multiplication..
Thanks for this useful advice. I'm wondering, does this only work up to 100? Because this is not working for me with 197x174
tell me how to multiply 89multiply by 80 .i cant get an ans ,which ever no i try using this method ans is wrong.
