You looked so beautiful. Your husbands’ happiness shows in his eyes. I was awestuck by seeing what your mother-in-law made from the 10 yr old used halter topped wedding gown. She is a very talented Renaissance Woman - your gown is the most beautiful modest style gown i have ever seen. There are several religions that prefer modest gowns and they could use yours as a gorgeous design. I also noticed your mil’s dress ( at least i think that was her feeding you wine) that aqua gown was also stunning. When my family (10 siblings) have had weddings its very similar in everyone contributing-“ many hands make light work” (and delicious food) So glad you shared such a joyous occasion with us.

It is a very Christian wedding gown. It was Queen Victoria who set the fashion for white wedding dresses. Seems incongruous at a Jewish Orthodox wedding.

Chana, this video made me so emotional. It was the happiness on your faces and the sense of community which reminded me of home. I’m from India but live elsewhere now. Back in the old days, weddings used to be like this where the entire community would come together to help celebrate the occasion. Also, it is so interesting to see similarities in different traditions. Such as the henna ceremony, it is such an Indian thing as many Hindu communities (not all) do that as well. The tradition of the bride circling 7 times that you mentioned sounds so much like how Hindus do 7 circles (both bride and groom) around the fire to pledge their allegiance to each other. And not to mention your MIL sewing skills, I could not tell that the dress you wore was a halter neck!! Thank you for this beautiful video Chana and I hope you keep smiling and spreading joy always. 🙃☺️

I think it’s amazing how close knit Jewish families are and how your in laws did all the catering and your MIL made your dress modest and made the other lovely outfit (don’t know how to spell it 😂) I think people could learn a lot from your way of life! "My family loved it." The fact that your parents fully enjoyed your wedding is a testament to their goodness. They went along with all the traditions that had become so important to you. Your husband was walked down the aisle with his family. You were also walked down the aisle with his family. The separate standing for men and women ... the separate eating for men and women, etc. I'm sure it was a lovely event and your parents genuinely loved it ... but I have to say ... your parents are an impressive display of grace and goodness. Your in laws sound like amazing and accomplished people. I'm sure, if the situation were reversed, all set around your parents' family tradition, they would have been equally gracious. The caftan was gorgeous. I would have wanted to wear that as a wedding dress!

Thank you for making this video! I might make one about how ours went too. I'm baalat teshuva. My background is Ashkenazi, but my husband is half German Ashkenazi and half Iraqi Sephardi. Our household traditions are Ashkesphardi and so was our wedding. My husband did not wear a kittel, but I did circle him 3 times. We definitely did see each other for the week before the wedding and even the night before because we lived in NYC and got married in TX. Travel made hiding from each other impossible. Traveling for the wedding brought us closer to my family and also made it easier to keep the guest list small. We got married on Tu BeShevat. We did fast, but we scheduled the wedding for noon and had a dairy lunch, so the fast was very short. That was also good because my husband was recovering from appendicitis and I was recovering from meningitis. (The month before our wedding was a wild ride and the fact that we had gotten civilly married before either of us got sick made the hospital visits way smoother.) Our wedding had fewer than 50 people. Our chuppah was made from a big table cloth with a tree displaying all 4 seasons on a bamboo frame my uncle made. Ever since, we've used that table cloth for Shabbat meals with guests. I picked a dress that I could wear for other occasions later and realized two days before the wedding that it also had pockets! My mom is Reform and she was the only person who actually lived in the city where the wedding was. She'd never been to an Orthodox wedding. I had never been to an Orthodox wedding! But she was instrumental in making it happen. It ended up being a really great time. Neat tidbit: we were also the first couple to ever have a chuppah in the particular city where we got married, so there was an entire rabbinic back and forth to figure out how to spell the name of it on the ketuba. We set the official precedent for Hebrew spelling of the town in question, so yay us!

Yay! I love wedding stories, they always make me think of my own wedding 🙂 You two were (and are!) such a sweet couple. As a fellow introvert I had lots of the same feelings about a wedding. But honestly, I was so caught up in actually getting married and being so happy to finally start the rest of my life with my husband, that I hardly noticed the people. Outside of the food and the flowers (the parts my mom took care of!) my wedding was pretty DIY and nothing was to fancy and that helped with my nerves too. I’m not typically a formal gal. The most fun thing about my wedding was probably that my cow was my ring bearer!

What a happy and handsome couple! I have been to a couple Jewish weddings but they were for couples of different faiths - in fact, my son's best friend from high school, who is Jewish, married a girl who was born in China, so while their wedding was more of what I would call a "regular" ceremony held outdoors, their reception was a wonderful mix of Jewish and Chinese traditions. It was probably one of the most fun receptions I've ever attended. It sounds like your day was one to remember as well - and I am SO impressed with your mother-in-law! Thank you for sharing.

The bride wore a stunning long red skirt and a red jacket embroidered in gold that had been made in China and the groom wore a long tunic in green/gold with gold embroidery that I think was also made in China. During the reception, they had a traditional Chinese tea ceremony and they did the Jewish dance where the couple is lifted up on chairs. It was quite a party!

What a stunning bride! You look so happy and glowy in those pictures :) Also, it's always so interesting to hear you speak some yiddish words as they are so similiar to German, like ,,badeken'' which is so similiar to the German Word ,,bedecken'' which means to cover something. I've also heard you say something along the lines of ,,shlepping'' in another video, which is basically the same as ,,schleppen''. You should visit Austria someday and see how many German words you understand just by hearing them :)

What an exciting story! What a shame you didn't have henna! This reminded me so much of my time travelling in Morocco (I've travelled a lot there). I had my hands painted with henna a couple of times and heard about Moroccan Berber wedding traditions which have some similarities to what you were saying. It was really good having my hand painted because it takes a while and then you have to wait for it to dry so I got to sit there for a while and talk with the Moroccan women. I visited Chefchaouen which I'm sure you know is a town entirely built by Jews leaving Spain in the fifteenth century. I also visited the Jewish quarters of various other places like Fes and a Jewish kasbah at the edge of the Sahara desert near Zagora. Good times! Thanks for reminding me! A belated congratulations on your wedding. You look beautiful and very happy together.
