    I have lived in the Western United States since 1970 and have traveled and flown over the area quite a bit. What I have gained in the last three years here, on this channel, has changed how I look at the landscape forever.

      Same here. In all the time I traveled to and stayed at Mammoth Lakes as a teenager I had no idea what was underfoot until about 15 years ago, and that's what got me interested in geology in the first place; but when I started my research and digging around I discovered Nick and his channel and it opened up the entire field to me. After 50-some years I've got the itch to _learn_ again.

    Thank you Basil and Stacia once again for sharing your time with us and letting us peer behind the curtains a little bit on the academic geology process. In order to be successful in any field requires dedication, but to excel requires a passion for your topic which clearly you both have. I think the Zentnerds are all blessed with an unquenchable curiousity which you were kind enough to indulge. As always Nick, thank you for bringing us these wonderful videos and looking forward to our next A-Z series this winter!

    Thank you, Basil & Stacia, for painting a picture for us of how well Penrose conference went!😄✨💗I'm glad to know that it was intense, open-ended, and hopeful for all the levels and the fields of geologists whom were at the conference, and that the conversations are going to keep happening in the intellectual communities, and that we as the general population can continue to hope to appreciate the progress that you make in geological interpretations of the make of North American Cordillera. For most, thank you Nick for plugging us Zentnerds into the journey for making this wonderful unique TH-cam community experience!

    Thanks for the recap. All of you must be exhausted! I, for one, was happy that Basil said he enjoyed his interaction with we "Zentnerds" prior to the conference. From my perspective, our field trip was two days of curiosity, learning, and joy! It was simply amazing to be there and to be able to interact with the geologists and each other.

    Basil, Stacia, Nick this is from the silly old 75 year old who has been so crazy excited by this Baja BC series this entire time.i physically can't keep up with everything through this whole to me adventures at times. During the conference I had to take time off for a huge medical emergency. I have held on by my teeth at moments and now am getting the wind back in my sails. I feared a stroke but it was bp, diabetes, and cancer medications all out of whack. I'm so very thrilled to hear the results of the conference and that more science and research will be continuing. I'm so proud to see so many scientists and students thinking, asking, questioning and doing all the "things". One day I will be gone from all of this but I will leave my curious portion behind in complete contentment. I hope you all understood the intense thrill I've gained from these experiences. For I will now continue to learn as much more as I can. Back to my precious volcanos, to LIPS, books and videos. BTW, some my ashes are to spread in the Colechuck area. My daughter knows which grove.

    Thanks Basil, Stacia, Ellen and Nick. I recorded most of the Zentnerds pre-Penrose lectures and those have seen 700-1000 views with Basil's WISZ talk having over 4000 views. My TH-cam channel has exploded, going from a handful of subscribers to well over 100, maybe close to 200. I have to attribute that success to Nick, Basil, Stacia and Ellen
    I never could have accomplished that on my own.
    Again thanks to the geologist that made it happen.

      Thanks as well to you, Sabr; I already gave you a shoutout before I saw your post here but I'm grateful you put those vids up since I couldn't make it for the pre-field-trip field trips with all the other Zentnerds. SO sorry I couldn't be there but I at least have Nick's vids and yours to put me as close to being there as possible.

    As a non-geologist who followed has all of the series of different geological events that Nick has covered, it is very exciting to see that there is going to be another generation of geologists working on the questions and findings that have been put forth to date.

    I was there with my wife at Riggins for 3/4 of the first day. We had interrupted our Twin Falls Idaho vacation so we could be part of the Zentnerd experience. It was quite a thrill. Nick was just as he is in the videos, so open and so welcoming, and all the other Zentnerds were so nice and friendly. I only wish that my wife and I could have stayed for the full 2 days. Thank you Stacia and Basil and everyone that had a hand in putting the field trip together. I'll never forget it.

    Thank you Nick for driving forward the public dispersal of such interesting content. And thank you Basil, Ellen and Stacia for bringing forth this conference, notably the "Zentnerd" portion. Especially that Zentnerd Field Guide, without which a lay person such as myself would be totally lost! Also to @sabrnooh7519 for recording some of those Zentnerd sessions! Lastly, the introduction of "TectoNick" at YT; what a breath of fresh air he is!

    I wish I could have been there at the Zentnerds field trip. We’re a curious bunch with a great love of learning. We’ve found a community of teachers who enjoy sharing their knowledge. Nick I greatly appreciate your love of learning and sharing that with us. Curiosity leads to unexpected discoveries. They way you’ve brought Geologist and amateurs along on this learning journey is really remarkable. Thank you.

    As a retired educator of middle school students, what a blessing all of you (including all the zentnerds) are being to young people everywhere by modeling lifelong curiosity. You demonstrate that it is cool and okay to have "wild curiosity" no matter if you are five or 95!

    • @briane173
      @briane173 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm just thankful to be elderly and still that curious. Nick has been an absolute inspiration in that regard; been following Nick in various media for close to 14 years now. There's no one in the business like him (that I've seen). I'm getting back that curiosity I had when I was a kid in school in the 60s/70s and now have a lot of time to devote to it. That's what's gonna keep me alive for the home stretch.

    Also so happy to hear that the Zentnerds “set the tone” for Basil with our “happy crazy questions full of in-depth curiosity.” Zentnerds rock!!

  • @briane173

    What I would've given to go on that trip as a Zentnerd just to meet and talk with the superstars of this subject, because I would've hung on every word coming from THE experts in the science behind WISZ and seeing with my own eyes the evidence for the evolving story. A beautiful part of the country would have been an added bonus. I wanted to go but couldn't pounce fast enough before it was closed off. I wound up dealing with health problems pretty much the whole summer and so I might not have been able to pull it off anyway; but because I couldn't go, I can't tell you how grateful I am for your keeping us up to date throughout the conference and giving us a chance to at least meet all these wonderful scientists by video.
    I also want to give a shoutout to Sabr Noor for putting up snippets of the field trips and the intercourse between Basil, Stacia, Ellen et al and the Zentnerds. Their openness in sharing their expertise and staying so patient and approachable was astounding and I really respect them for that. They put together a great "preseason" before the main event, and a great event generally. Y'all should be proud of the work you've done and we all greatly appreciate it, goes without saying. Cheers.

    • @briane173
      @briane173 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm guessing that time-wise that would be difficult for research geologists like Basil and Stacia. But Nick can compensate for that with videos and livestreams like this one featuring all these same players. I just appreciate how approachable they are and it's clear they see the same value in what Nick is doing for the profession and for CWU, and they're quite eager to share what they know with the general public. That's actually pretty rare in the scientific community, which can appear quite parochial, ego-driven and secretive with their intellectual property. I see none of that in this community, and it's refreshing and I hope an example for others to consider trying a little outreach with potential students and even regular schmucks like myself.

    Thanks to professors Gordon, Tikoff, and Zenter what a wonderful experience to be made part of. There are so many positive things to be said I have no idea where to start except to say that if the rest of the scientific world work to these goals and standards the human race would be much better off than we are.
    God Bless.

    • @briane173
      @briane173 ปีที่แล้ว

      At no time has that been more essential, and the way I see it Nick and his fellow research geologists are paving the way for this approach among the earth sciences community with the general public, and have set the premier example of how to do it and WHY to do it.

    The way I look at it, the Baja-BC A-Z series created the framework for this conference. An excellent starting point, like a good first draft, that included many of the key individuals representing a variety of viewpoints. The audience learned a great deal, but so did, I suspect, many of the participating geologists who watched other presentations, which was a sort of catalyst for the conference's collaborative thinking. None of this would have worked, however, had it not been for the leadership of folks like Basil and Statia and many, many others with an eye on moving the process forward. And, of course, a very special thank you to Nick for bringing us interested lay people along for the ride. How far we've come since the warring side debates of the past century.

    A lot going on here the last few days, so it took a while to make time to watch this, but I'm so glad I did. It's good to know that the future of geology is in good hands with folks that are curious about things as are those of us who watch all your videos. We may be curious, but the students and professionals that were at the Penrose can help drive the layout of the future.

    With all due respect, I’m skeptical with subduction zones being the primary driver of “Push-Pull” continental conveyance theory; wouldn’t the driver be parallel to that margin to have the greatest effect, as opposed to the many oblique active margins around the globe?
    I also do not agree that there is enough surface area at the proposed “Pull margin” subduction zones to pull anything more than extending a region of a continent, let alone thousands of miles of massive continental crust, especially NA, which is rotating counter to the proposed “Pull” motion.

    I guess I must be a "Zentnerd", after all I am an atmospheric scientist by trade and training, yet I still find myself completely absorbed by the Baja-BC challenge to our understanding of earth's history. With my hammer, I see everything as a nail, that is, as an atmospheric dynamicist, I see the geological puzzle as an analogy to examining the movement of the atmosphere in extremely slow motion. I suppose that the material mass is still obeying the laws of pressure, density, temperature, component phase changes, and the like, ergo the mantle seems to behave the same way as the atmosphere using differing values of pressure, density, etc. Where the atmosphere moves at a rapid timescale, the earth moves at a much much slower pace, still, the dynamics should remain essentially the same. IS ANYONE APPROACHING THE SUBJECT FROM A DYNAMIC POINT OF VIEW? Thanks....

    • @lethaleefox6017
      @lethaleefox6017 ปีที่แล้ว

      Geology and Atmospheric Dynamics are interrelated to understanding past weather patterns back when geographic structures have been in different patterns in different time periods... the Snowball Earth and the times of global maximums should have had some interesting weather effects...

    • @willbradley7450
      @willbradley7450 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lethaleefox6017 Yes, climate can be inferred from some geology and yet, do you see how the same forces and structures that caused hurricane Hilary to form and run from Baja to BC are the same forces and structures in the mantle that send land masses in THE SAME PATTERN AS THE HURRICANE? A deeper (pun intended) understanding of crustal movements may be had using atmospheric analogies (rather than trying to re-invent the wheel).

    • @lethaleefox6017
      @lethaleefox6017 ปีที่แล้ว

      @willbradley7450 the flip side of mountains being raised by subduction, producers the subducted slabs of stiffer materials that could affect the more fluid mantle materials, like flip side mantle weather...
      When you put up a barrier like the land blocking ocean currents from flowing from Atlantic Ocean to Pacific Ocean and on around the world you get things like the flow north along the Atlantic coast to Europe... Earth's rotation powers currents, both in water and mantle... the barriers might be pushing America's West and warmer climate into the Arctic... the isolation of Antarctica and the current that surrounds it. Keeping cold...cold might explain the difference in ice development north and south....
      A speculation that if the the Atlantic and Pacific had been connected with a sea level canal instead of the lock system one at Panama.... could erosion have widened it enough to affect the Caribbean currents switching to an equatorial one draining heat from the north... enough to flip us into an ice age again in spite of human efforts to warm up the planet?
      A weird rabbit hole to explore, but were past cold stretches partly a result of continental configurations?

    I suggest everyone watch session Z with Karin, Basil and Stephen again. My overarching point to make is that to the extent that the data is accurate there can’t be any contradiction. The only issue is the interpretation of the data. All of the models supported by accurate data must agree, somehow, by definition.

And, I don't mean to just blow smoke at Nick, but your TH-cam efforts with live comments and your constant questioning attitude, (by a teacher who has all the answers, right?) just sets the stage for a more open field of inquiry.
