    The injury concern is legitimate because people of that height have a really hard time recovering from injuries to their legs or feet due to their sheer size, that being said there are durable big men out there like jokic who plays damn near every game

      @@eva11883 the difference in height is probably balanced out by the fact jokic is also 280lbs, that adds an injury risk as well. As I said before I think the way jokic plays is just very consistent and he doesn’t put himself in much danger

      The thing that's weird with him though compared to other bigs his size in the past, none besides Ralph Sampson were as mobile and as agile as him. With Modern Medicine it's honeslty gonna be exciting to watch how he deals with possible injuries. His frame is a really good base to build on, he's got a Giannis like frame (excluding height and wingpsan) when you compare skinny Giannis to him, the frames do look similar. It helps show that he could actually put on more weight than say a Chet Holmgren who has a really bad frame compared to Wemby's and it doesnt look like Chet will be able to put on as much as Wemby's frame can.

    • @Washanuga
      @Washanuga ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dylandavis9833 "mobile and as agile as him" that's the scary thing though. There has never been a player his height that was tasked to do even a fraction of what Wemby is capable of. His overall load on the court will be way higher which = greatly increased risk of injury, even compared to the past guys his size, who were mainly just lumbering shot blockers and rebounders in the paint. All that agility and mobility will come at a cost.
      I also think the Giannis comparison is pointless. Giannis is 6'10.5" compared to Wemby's 7'4". Massive difference. There has never been a player over 7'1" / 7'2" who became a superstar in terms of talent and skill. And even if we just look at all players that height, there has never been a single one whose career wasn't diminished by injuries.

    • @dylandavis9833
      @dylandavis9833 ปีที่แล้ว

      I make the Giannis comparison to compare frames. Showing that Wemby has a frame that could build a substantial amount of muscle. If you compare his frame to Chet's it is drastically different and you can easily tell who could put more weight on. Plus he's going to the Spurs, the team that literally created load management, so that we'll help him a lot cause they will know how to handle him and his workload/@@Washanuga

    The injuries are a genuine concern, simply because he is sooo damn tall and the record of injuries for NBA players over 7ft 3 (granted it's a small list) is shocking. Like 75% have major career ending injuries. However, his mobility and how in proportion his body is, is a great sign. I wouldn't want him to put on too much weight, just slowly does it and he'll be good. What's almost most impressive about Wemby is how professional, grounded, and humble he is already! He seems to have a good team around him, that combinded with the joining the Spurs who are a fantastic organisation who will look after him and allow him to flourish gives me hope that he'll have a all-time legendary career

    The injury concerns come from this basic principle: tall, lean players have frames not built to maintain the higher stresses caused by weight and the forces caused my running, jumping, and changing direction quickly. As a player gets taller and heavier, they become more and more likely to face major injuries to the feet and knees as a direct result of either putting on the weight to stop strong bigs or trying to out-move smaller players.

    Actuality I think John Hollinger ran an analysis like 10 years ago and he did find a positive correlation to likelihood of injury and height. I think the increased risk started at 7'1 or 7'2, it didn't actually apply to 7'0 even. But yes, the more you go above 7'1 or so the more likely you are to have significant injury issues.

    He's a 3 in a 5 body... he'll get stun locked if he posts up against the big centers.... I think he needs to keep moving and crash the boards to get 20 points consistently....by moving I mean he needs to stay in that 15 foot range, he'll have height advantage vs. A typical 6'7" help side defender...my guess is that he needs to play a 4, hit the 10-15 footers and then crash the boards...now on defense, he's a great shutdown option to defend the game tieing or winning 3 point attempts because of his length...it would definitely try to put him on the best 3 pointer guy under 20 seconds left in the game...he has mobility

    injuries are a concern, but people are optimistic about Victor for a few reasons: 1) he has unusual coordination and fluidity at that size. the guys at his size or higher who had bad injuries were stiff and couldn't move their bodies athletically. 2) he has a perimeter game, with guard-like ball handling and potential shooting, so he doesn't need to post up all the time and bang with big guys on offense. 3) sports medicine has improved hugely, and Wemby has always worked with people to help him develop and gain weight in the most efficient and safest way possible

    to answer your question about the tall players and injuries, the little group of players listed is probably over 50% of the league's players that's been over 7'3. the injury rate in terms of % really does jump WAY up when talking about insanely tall players
    btw im someone who thinks Wemby can avoid major injuries. he's gonna get hurt, everyone does. but I don't think he'll be drowning in injuries like everyone thinks. but stuff like length of limbs definitely increases chance for injury to happen one way or another

    NBA players body types are unique among athletes. In what other sport is a 7ft 4in person perfect for?? It's hard to imaging living in that body 24/7 when the world is made for much smaller people. My brother in law is 6'9 and you should see him getting in and out of his car with his arthritic knees and ankles. He played college basketball at a small Oregon college back in the late 70's and that was the only time his height was truly useful for him. According to him, it is pretty miserable being excessively tall.
    NBA players seem to sit out for ANY injury at all. In some sports you can play through some injuries, but players in the NBA miss a lot of games due to minor injuries. The nature of the game with it constant running, jumping, cuts and change of directions really tax these big lanky bodies and joints. They really suffer as they age too.
    My prediction for Victor is that he will also be quite prone to injury. I also think that all of the expectation placed on this young man will result in so much criticism and added pressure that he may wish he hadn't garnered so much attention. I hope I am wrong. He has be handled by the best sports science professionals available who have developed personalized exercises and workouts for Victor and his unique size challenges. Lets hope that his body responds by developing into a solid NBA big man physique that can handle the rigors of a 82 regular season game schedule. *If given the choice, I'd prefer to be a Othani or Trout and make my $600 million dollars playing baseball for 20 years. Then ride off into the sunset and enjoy the rest of my life as a normal size human being.

    Being taller is harder on your frame and joints, so yes, you can kind of predict that, barring some miracle or if he just doesn't get much playing time, he will almost certainly have some wear and tear injruies during his career. The team's docs and PTs will try to manage and prevent it, but it's almost inevetiable at his size. That's why the guy brought up other guys at or near his size; the injuries are expected and certainly were considered in his draft stock.

    The reason injuries is a concern is because Draft Picks (especially High Draft Picks) are a coveted asset and it will set your franchise back if you waste your Draft Pick on someone who can't stay healthy (not to mention in the NBA it's even more highly coveted because you only get 2 picks a draft)....Look no further what the effects of Portland picking Greg Oden #1 Overall in 2007- Portland has not recovered since that unfortunate Draft.

  • @Washanuga

    I'd be willing to bet big money he won't reach the greatest heights of his potential due to injuries. If he does, it'll be the most unprecedented event in NBA history by far. There has never been a player over 7'1" / 7'2" who was a superstar/top 5 player in the league.
    The thing is, Wemby is going to be asked to do a hell of a lot for one player. In this modern NBA, he'll handle the ball, make plays, shoot from all distances, guard the paint and even the perimeter on occasion. In the past, guys his height were basically not tasked to do anything other than be lumbering shot blockers and rebounders in the paint. His skill set is far beyond that. He's like a C, a wing, and a big SG rolled up into one person. That just means the risk of injury is increased tremendously.
    I hope I'm wrong, because it would be fun as hell and incredible if he can stay healthy and reach those heights.

On the other hand, Manute Bol was 7'7" and -- before coming to the US -- weighed 180 lbs. Six months later, he was 220 lbs. Granted in his case it was more just a lack of available food in his native South Sudan, but even so, I expect Wembanyama will put on some weight if you get him traditional, greasy, American junk food.
    Edit: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was 7'2", and he's pretty much the model of NBA longevity. Still, it's pretty rare that anyone *much* over 7 feet has long-term success.

    Most players over 7'2 have injuries that shorten their careers. Almost all of them are not fluid in the way they move and lack agility. That's what makes Wemby different and a curious case in terms of staying healthy. The closest thing we have ever seen to Wemby's mobility and agility is Ralph Sampson who's career was shortened due to injury. It's honestly pretty exciting to see how he handles injuries because Modern Medicine has become so developed over time so we can see how much that can lengthen Wemby's career. He's gonna get hurt, it's sports, everyone gets hurt at some point, but it's about how he deals with the injuries. I personally think he will be the first nba player at his size to have a decently long career that is consitently effective.

    7'6 Hall of Fame center Yao Ming could only manage 7 full seasons of play due to injury.
    7'0 all star Brad Daugherty could only manage 8 seasons of play.
    7'4 Hall of Famer Ralph Sampson after his third season only managed to play 213 of a possible 492 games over the next 6 seasons before retiring.
    7'0 #1 pick Greg Oden (2007) only managed to play 105 total games due to injury.
    And even the healthiest centers that tall don't manage to play for a super long time. 7'4 Mark Eaton played 11 years and 7'4 Rik Smits pulled out 12 healthy years.
    Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the one big anomaly. At 7'2, he managed to play for over 1500 games in 20 seasons, and over 200 playoff games as well. Unfortunately, he's the exception.

    As a Spurs fan for life, I hope for great things. He's a supremely talented and solid young man and has said nothing but the right things. But... I have watched Yao, Sampson, Smits, Kristaps, etc. and it has become obvious to me that the Lord did not design 7-foot 4-inch humans to pound up and down a hardwood floor 100 nights out of the year, plus practices. Their feet and knees just can't take it.
    Victor's physio team knows this, too, and much of his fitness regime is dedicated to strengthening his feet, but can you really do that? Is the first time he lands on someone's foot going to be the start of a injury-filled career? I wish him a long and trophy-laden career, but it would be a fight against history, to be certain.

    I hate to be part of the hype but I don’t think it’s crazy to say his ceiling is higher than any player we’ve seen. 7’4” players are not supposed to be as skilled or as fluid as he is. Kristaps Porzingis was nicknamed the “Unicorn” for how rare it is to be so skilled at over 7 feet but I see Wemby being better.

    To answer your question about injuries and tall players, the data is pretty clear. No one can produce a list of people well above 7 foot who haven't been plagued by injuries. It is easy to produce a list of players well above 7 foot who had incredibly short careers in the NBA due to injury. It is a bit of a gamble for teams: IF these players don't get injured, they have insane tools, but if they are on the bench, they do nothing for your team. The spurs are betting on advancements in medical and physio to keep him on the court, all though to be fair, any team in the NBA would happily take this gamble too. I am not trying to say it is a bad gamble, but instead I am trying to say it is like the lottery, in that it is the kind of gambling with low odds of winning but high payouts.

      It really is not. In NBA history their is 26 players 7 Foot 3 Inches or Taller in the NBA 70 years history that means about 1 every 3 years there is a guy this tall. 26 is not a good sample size to prove it.

      @jweezy101491 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Fawnswine Of course it is. It is plenty of sample size. The evidence is so overwhelming we don't need more data. If you want to say medical science has advanced and its different now so we don't know, fair enough, but the past is clear.

      @@jweezy101491 It is not. 26 players is not a good sample size and not all those players played in the same era which in the 80s/90s NBA was alot more physical than today this is why its not enough of data to prove any point you trying to make rather just say all player 7 Foot or taller is injury risk have a good sample size to back it up but you cant use 26 players as a sample size to prove any point you trying to make. If it was 100 maybe you have a case but you have 0 case with 26 players.

    Those EU comparisons were really really bad IMO. The Spanish league is a good bit ahead of the French league. Even worse is the Doncic comparison. Doncic put up better stats in the Euroleague, the single best league outside the NBA by far and was Euroleague MVP. Doncic was leagues better than Wembanyama on their draft days. Wemby is still the better prospect but Luka's Real Madrid career was just incredible.

    It seems NBA players are getting injured more than usual. Starting to play full length season at 10 years old has destroyed their lower bodies. Europeans typically start slower and later, which I believe helps. Now that centers can't just camp the defensive paint players are making way more difficult movements on the body. Now with all this space, they are allowed to repeat this movements endlessly. That is why players are getting injured more now.

The track record for guys that tall is,outside of Mark Eaton, zero. Both that tall and that skinny I hope I'm wrong and there can always be a first but it hasn't happened yet. Look up Ralf Sampson he's the closest thing to Wemby we've seen and by his fourth year injuries had already turned a HOF player into a bench guy.

    “Complete package with no weakness.” Absolute hype. The guy has some noticeable weaknesses. He’s a fairly poor shooter from mid to deep range, no post game, and he has to settle for bad shots all the time because he can’t get to his spot. He’s gets bumped out of position by stronger guys in France. The claims that he’s 7-4 Kevin Durant are pure nonsense. He has some handle (for his size), and his shot is unblockable. If he works on that middy, that pick and pop would be unstoppable. His size will make players question jumpers because Wemby can make up ground with length. There’s a Dr on TH-cam that has said he’s gonna deal with shoulder pain at some point because of how long his arms are and how much leverage it creates on his shoulder.
    “Setback threes, step back threes” lmao. He shot like 27% from 3 for his career which is horrid. He also shot low 20% with his back tot he basket in the post. The video maker is spouting complete nonsense. “Step back threes!!!!”
