Only he knows the injustices and the lack of recognition that he had to suffer in his years in DM. The fans, me included, still regret his departure and we only can imagine how the post albums had sounded with his genius, but I imagine Alan every day happier with his decision

@@DxModel219 I recently watched a video about this song and the guy (a producer himself) stated that Alan actually played the bassline for this tune. He seemed pretty sure and it does sound like a real bass.

@@luminescent8781 It was the spirituality of Alan Wilder... Have you heard the demo version of Walking in my shoes? Look for it on you tube and you'll find the difference between what Martin wrote and what finally appeared on disc. That difference was Alan Wilder (of course, with the voice of Dave). Since Alan left DM, DM was no more Depeche Mode... all these years they have only been Demo Mode. All their songs sound like the demos Martin presented to the group before they were completely transformed by Alan. That´s why one only can think about how would have sounded all these beautiful songs with the hand and talent of Alan all around them....

Wilder gets the credit, but remember Flood was also involved. Both of them in the studio working on the album. Wilder used his one veto rights to have the song as a the next single, but then couldn't use it to veto the band's decision to use Butch Vig's version of "In Your Room" as the single.
