Didn’t even think about the Grizzlies-Lakers connection with West and the Gasol brothers (Marc’s rights along with Kwame were traded to Memphis in exchange for then rising star Pau).
West was no longer with the Grizzlies when the trade was made. The only trade from that era where a former player "gifted" their old team a star was McHale "gifting" the Celtics KG.
To be fair, West had already left the Grizzles by the time the Pau trade happened, but I feel confident the Lakers would have had to give up much more if West wasn't connected to that team (And remember that if Memphis knew Marc was going to be a future DPOY, they would have never drafted Thabeet 2nd a year later).
Considering Kwame’s expiring contract allowed The Grizzlies to sign Zach Randolph, plus obviously Marc Gasol, I think it was a savvy move, plus Jerry is on record saying he was not actually part of the Grizzlies organization at that time of the trade
Can we talk about how badly the lakers have been run since 2013? Jeanie Buss has successfully alienated their greatest gm and one of their greatest players, as well as debatably their best player in Magic. It’s disgusting how they treat legends who built up the franchise
Magic? You mean when he suddenly quit as GM without any warning blindsiding everyone? That was kinda shitty of him to do. From what I remember his issue was with Pelinka being a snake more than anyone else. He wasn't a good GM anyway made some dumb moves(letting Lopez walk when he wanted to come back, gifting the Clippers Zubac, buying into the Ball hype etc)and wasn't totally committed to the job with all his many other ventures he had to worry about. The real mistake was not bringing West back right then and there and mending that bridge instead letting him go to the f*cking Clippers.
As a Lakers Fan I wasn't that aware of how deep and toxic the beef had gotten. It's so tragic because the Lakers franchise owes Jerry West for so much of their historic dominance. R.I.P to an O.G, a forward thinker, a Legend, he seemed like a great man.
RIP Jerry West. You may be gone, but your silhouette will cast its shadow on the NBA and world forever. NBA Champion. Dynasty Builder. Legend. RIP Bill Walton. What they say is true about Champions, your name will be etched in history. You own a place in Celtics history, and a mantle that so many greats before and after you have stood on. MVP. NBA Champion. Legend. The NBAs lost a lot in the past few years, and as the years go by, we move further away from their contributions to the league. But its important to remember a building cant stand without its foundations. You need a strong foundation to hold the load that's ever expanding. To all the the places the NBA will go, its on the shoulders of giants. Well miss them both, but they wont ever be forgotten. Thats all you can do in life. I believe you only die when you're forgotten. Needless to say, these two and every one that has passed, or will pass, wont be.
I love all the videos y’all put out, but I’m gonna have to wait to watch this one. I’m a lifelong lakers fan and Jerry West was a hugely inspirational figure to me and it breaks my heart knowing the Lakers did him so dirty. RIP to the logo.
Don't disrespect the LEGEND.... THE LOGO. TRULY UNDERRATED... 26 a game... All from deep... No 3 point line... Not to mention the GREATEST sports executive in any era...
Small correction, The LOGO averaged 27 PPG (not 26) and 29 PPG in the playoffs. Incredibly, he averaged 40.6 PPG through 11 playoff games in the 1964-65 season. Also a 5X All-Defensive point guard. They didn't keep track of steals back then but Lakers scorekeeper John Radcliffe said that if steal stats had been kept for West’s career, he would easily be the league’s all-time leader. "In his prime, there were many nights where he registered 6 or more steals, and many other nights where he had more than 10, explained Radcliffe, who closely observed nearly every home game that West ever played."
My dad is from California. When West left the Lakers he was sure they were going to go through a rough patch. They didn’t immediately but later on watching West help build the Warriors stunk for Laker fans.
@@iAintSayDat I doubt West being there changes much as far as that goes. As much attention gets put on Shaq and Kobe hating each other it was also about money Shaq wanted a huge contract, more than what Dr.Buss thought he was worth. Shaq declined sharply just a couple years later and was never consistently healthy after the 05 season, apart from one year in 09, so he was proven right in that respect.
The man that brought Kobe to the Lakers...Immediately, from the first time he saw him work out as a 17 year old, said that he was the best player in that 1996 draft and would eventually be the perfect fit next to Shaq...Just a true genius who had SUCH an eye for talent. I read Jeff Pearlman's book about the Shaq/Kobe Lakers which goes into a lot of this, and apparently, Phil Jackson was just such an A**hole to Jerry West, and treated him like the bottom of his shoe, which is sad. It's a shame that a franchise that Jerry West gave literally everything to, ended in beef.
When West worked for The Warriors he stopped a trade that would have sent Klay Thompson to Minnesota for Kevin Love. I think that was a wise decision as I'm not sure we would have won titles without Klay.
He threatened to resign if they did the trade, he's done that a few times over his executive career. Another example is after the Lakers lost to Houston in 86 Dr. Buss had been looking into a "upgrade" that would send James Worthy to Dallas in exchange for Mark Aguirre and Roy Taperly. West got pissed when he learned about it and threatened to resign if they did the trade and good thing to since Worthy was so important, all the Lakers needed was a better backup Center which they got in Mychal Thompson and won two more titles.
Turns out the klay trade was extremely exaggerated. The were not even close to trading for love. In fact the majority wanted klay. I know Stephen A Smith was one of the people claiming Jerry West stopped the trade. But Bob Myers and others have said it wasn't true. Jerry West was responsible for convincing Kd.
What about Hakeem Olajuwon with the Rockets? Vince Carter with Raptors? Speaking of football, Calvin Johnson & Barry Sanders with the Lions? Those are legendary and more recent too.
@@ultrustictom landry and the cowboys too. his widow said his shabby treatment by jerry jones led to landry “renewing his love for the giants” and rooting for them for the rest of his life.
This is a beef I've been waiting on for a while to discuss. It's too bad Jerry is going to his grave knowing that a ownership under appreciated and under valued his importance and influence for all he did for that franchise and made it for what history it currently has, and took it all for granted. What a shame honestly. He didn't deserve that
It must really sad sight to see a guy who spent his entire 14-year career with one franchise have a beef with that same franchise and this served as a precursor to Scottie Pippen's beef with the Chicago Bulls years later. RIP Logo.
This is possibly worse, i think. The bulls quarrel with Pip was solely for the money, and their management was famously cheap. They were like that to everyone except Jordan, and that was because he was far too valuable. The beef lasted from when Pip's value overgrew his contract until 98, which is like 6 or 7 years. Bulls didn't really beef with Pip after that. But Lakers consistently undermining West throughout his career is pretty nasty. And the guy was a Laker for life. Pip actually delayed getting a surgery until the 97-98 season begin because of his grudge with the management, and he ended up getting big bucks elsewhere. But West stayed with the franchise for decades until he finally gave up. I'm not saying what Bulls did to Pip was OK, but I think it's extra wrong when a guy as loyal to the franchise as West, a guy nicknamed 'the logo' gets this kind of treatment.
I knew it was anything but rosy, but man, looking at it like this, it's a well done to roast beef. But knowing he got to where he did despite his burnout and depression. There's some hope. May he finally, properly RestIP.
It's disheartening to see that the Clippers gave much more care about Mr. West's passing than the Lakers. Felt they were just obligated to do so. Rest in peace to Mr. Jerry West.
It was really disappointing to see the Lakers only posting a paragraph statement on their website when he passed after all he did for that franchise. It could have been an opportunity to put the conflict to rest and they just wasted it.
As.a warrios fan, I was elated when west broke off relations with the Lakers. Even more elated when he became a consultant to the dubs and helped them become a championship winning franchise. One of the greatest players to have ever played the game and one of tge greatest executives He had no reason to be humble, but he was. Overcame a horrific childhood and pushed himself to excellence till his last day on tge planet. A life well lived
You know, you could make a case that the Los Angeles Lakers are the biggest soap opera in all of Hollywood. Forget about your TV soap operas (Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, The Young and the Restless). The Lakers have been one big long-running soap opera ever since they planted their roots in L.A. I’m amazed that Jerry West was able to tolerate all that drama for so long. P.S. Jerry West was one of the greatest legends in NBA history. Both as a player and executive. Jerry, thank you for all you did for basketball. 💜💛🏀
Not a Lakers fan, but it’s real tragedy that the wicked witch of the west (Jeanie Buss) decides to alienate the most important Laker (not the greatest) and the the most signifcant NBA person after all he did. Jerry West will always win this beef even if the current Lakers management doesn’t acknowledge it.
OK so single handily Jerry West turns around the Lakers - all by himself. That was after he became a true SUPER STAR playing guard for lakers for 14 years. Then in comes Phil Jackson who was the right coach at the right time but Phil then decides he wants to sleep with the Lakers's owners daughter. This is called "Dipping Your Pen in Company Ink". One thing West isn't is dumb. He can see the writing on the wall. Jackson coaches team and then.plays house with Jerry Buss daughter. Pure power play, thus leaving West no choice but to leave. Phil has and EGO the size Blue Whale and Jeanie Buss is someone who strips first and thinks later. West ranks all time top 5 guards, if not top three. He ranks number one and NBA general manager. West is the Lakers but alas with air head Jeanie running Lakers - the Lakers are no longer Jerry West's best memories. Sad because this guy was wall ALL CLASS.
Jerry West lived a profound basketball and American life - iconic as a player, executive and looming figure in the history of the game. He was an MVP, a champion, a gold medalist, a dynasty-builder and literally the league’s logo. West ended his playing career with 14 All-Star, 12 All-NBA Team and five All-Defensive Team selections, and scored 25,192 points, 6,238 assists and 5,366 rebounds in 932 games, translating to an average of 27.0 points, 6.7 assists and 5.8 rebounds per game. After retiring in 1974, West transitioned into a successful executive role, shaping the Lakers' dominance through strategic draft picks and trades. His tenure as general manager saw the Lakers capture multiple championships in the 1980s and early 2000s.
Jerry West legacy is set for life. No matter what the Lakers franchise didn't do, they will never be able to take away this legend's achievements. Its a shame they treated him as they did, and maybe thats why they are the most hated franchise in NBA hustory.
I hate where the Lakers have gone since Jerry Buss died in 2013. It’s a completely different franchise from the one we know and love. Seven coaches since then, inconsistent teams, celebrating non championship banners; what happened to the Lakers, bro?
@@turtle19dad The internet sure has a lot of ideas about how the Lakers can become irrelevant again like they were post-Kobe. Lebron and Davis both just put together healthy and productive seasons. They're not the problem. Frankly, their biggest problem last year was awful coaching.

The fact that other NBA teams showed more attention & respect to Jerry West's passing than the Lakers shows how far that once proud organization has fallen. Jerry West was a Lifelong Laker who was primarily instrumental in building their championship dynasties in the 80's and early 2000s. They should be ashamed of themselves. Leaving him off the top 5 Lakers list off All-time and putting LeBron on it was a real slap in the face.
Exactly. This franchise has become a complete joke. It was already starting, but really accelerated after The Fraud King took his talents to LA. Now, they are just a clown show.
Watch Jeanie Buss roll out the Jerry West tributes next year at Crypto Arena and make bank. All this appreciation for him when he's gone and none when he was alive. Jeanie is an embarrassment to her father's legacy.
That is so so true. I hate those posthumously awards or comments - damn it say it, do it, show it when they’re alive for goodness sake. Jeanie, Rob and all the other bozo’s up in Management should be shipped off to Siberia or the Ukraine. What they did or maybe what they DIDN’T say is just as bad as JJ saying Bob Cousy played against Fireman / tradesmen, policemen…..NO RESPECT. NO CLASS. NO BRAINS. With comments like that, though his basketball IQ may be high, his character, his personality, his integrity are LIGHT YEARS BEHIND!
Considering the Lakers did a one sentence statement on his death that had a vibe of "We are glad he's dead", I honestly wouldn't be shocked if they only do a 2 second tribute video and then act like he never existed.
So what I'm hearing is that Jerry West is the front office GOAT. Dude assembled the most important rebuilds of the last 50 years of the NBA. Besides his great career as a player he really earned that logo.
Firstly, sincere condolences 🙏🏾❤️ to Karen West and the entire West family. Secondly, I became a Lakers following their 1969 defeat at the hands of “that team in green”….and instantly began to hate them until now with a PASSION. Of any, team in any sport, I can’t stand nor ever will stand the Celtics! As a 14 year old, I saw the first preseason game in Honolulu between the Lakers and the Bucks. West & Wilt vs Jabbar and Oscar. Epic. I loved the Lakers and Jerry Mr.Clutch West. Over the decades, I’ve seen the Showtime Lakers, the Kobe & Shaq Lakers, even the LeBron Lakers play live……but what hurts me the most is the the team……the ONLY NBA Team I support, blatantly disrespect the Logo, the Legend, the Complete Laker, Mr. Clutch - the late Jerry West. The way they treated him makes me want to puke and start supporting anyone else, even the sick Celtics. The Buss family will have a lot of questions to answer for. Jerry West’ passing this week will bring to light and the forefront just how sickening and absolute PATHETIC the Buss Family really are! To not have taken care of the Logo for his tireless commitment and dedication for over 40 years to the Lakers organisation IS REALLY CHEAP and NO CLASS! Downright PATHETIC. I for one, would love to see someone else ( with real class and REAL MONEY) BUY the Lakers Team and start respecting the coaches and staff, and players by really valuing their contributions, pay them their worth and appreciate and treat them like other teams around the league do! I also believe, Mr Clutch will have the last laugh, where He is going, Jerry Buss can only hope to go. Not saying The Logo was perfect or a saint, but he treated people with respect, showed gratitude, kindness, empathy and love. Buss family all about power and wealth…..can’t take that stuff to heaven. Too add from what I remember of the Lakers Hulu doc(it's been a couple years since I've seen it) West had beef with Jackson before he came to the Lakers. West denied he hated him on the doc but others, players including Shaq, had said he did and it was enough of an issue West had said, paraphrasing and privately, he did not want to bring Jackson in as coach.
Mr. Clutch, the Logo. That man was a throughline through generations of NBA basketball since basically the beginning. He’s been such an important figure in the NBA 🥲 RIP champ
Jerry West was the most important Laker ever, and ever since the ownership started to treat him with disrespect, the Lakers have struggled and are struggling still. Kobie and Shaq both requested Jerry return because they felt his loss and knew he had the right stuff to turn things around. Sadly Jennie Buss is no Jerry Buss and that is why the Lakers best days are a thing of the past.
It’s a damn shame how things ended between Jerry and the Lakers, he should’ve been treated and respected like the Laker legend he is. Such a brilliant mind for the game alienated by some of the worst ownership. At least Dr. Buss got results with his mess, Jeanie’s tenure has been one of the worst in Laker history.

What a way to honour a Lakers legend by talking about his history and legacy with his team. RIP To The Logo, Jerry West!
Lakers really embody the West Coast ‘Nice but Not Kind’ energy. If they were anywhere else but LA Jeanie would’ve been forced to sell the team by now.
Jeanie leaving out Jerry West in her top 5 laker players is just absolutely ridiculous.
I love all the videos y’all put out, but I’m gonna have to wait to watch this one. I’m a lifelong lakers fan and Jerry West was a hugely inspirational figure to me and it breaks my heart knowing the Lakers did him so dirty. RIP to the logo.
Jerry's loss is very fresh. Come back in your own time, when you're good and ready to watch this video!
West was literally the glue keeping the Lakers together. The Buss family fell into success
Its sad to see a franchise discard their alumnis like this. Now, it's too late to repair the damage this beef has done. RIP Mr. West.

My dad is from California. When West left the Lakers he was sure they were going to go through a rough patch. They didn’t immediately but later on watching West help build the Warriors stunk for Laker fans.
He also built the Grizzlies too or at least set the foundation for it.
Oh right after he left they began to lose, they still had Shaq and Kobe but the pieces around them were not the same quality at all.
@@eboooo West coulda been a peace maker both Shaq and Kobe respected great players
@@eboooo wrong. west left in 2000. Lakers went on to go to 3 more finals and win 2
Jerry West, the Logo. Man was a legend as a player but is probably better as a team builder. Man helped assemble 3 Dynasties, that is insane! RIP.
If the Grizzlies had won the 2003 lottery it would've been 4 dynasties.
When West worked for The Warriors he stopped a trade that would have sent Klay Thompson to Minnesota for Kevin Love. I think that was a wise decision as I'm not sure we would have won titles without Klay.
I remember that. That would have happened and the Warriors are not a dynasty.
And he traded pau gasol for Marc gasol and he the reason kawhi chose clippers over lakers
The Buss kids are one of the million reasons why I hate nepotism.
The two younger sons are a great asset in the scouting department. It's Jim and Jeanie who destroyed the Lakers legacy.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a sports franchise been at odds with one of their legends since the Cowboys and Jimmy Johnson.
What about Hakeem Olajuwon with the Rockets? Vince Carter with Raptors? Speaking of football, Calvin Johnson & Barry Sanders with the Lions? Those are legendary and more recent too.

This is a beef I've been waiting on for a while to discuss.

Forget about your TV soap operas (Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, The Young and the Restless). The Lakers have been one big long-running soap opera ever since they planted their roots in L.A. Jeanne buss downfall i’m here for it
Not a Lakers fan, but it’s real tragedy that the wicked witch of the west (Jeanie Buss) decides to alienate the most important Laker (not the greatest) and the the most signifcant NBA person after all he did.
You should’ve added the part Rob Pelinka, Kobe called for a meeting with West to discuss Kobe wanting to play in Memphis

The fact that other NBA teams showed more attention & respect to Jerry West's passing than the Lakers shows how far that once proud organization has fallen. Jerry West was a Lifelong Laker who was primarily instrumental in building their championship dynasties in the 80's and early 2000s. They should be ashamed of themselves. Leaving him off the top 5 Lakers list off All-time and putting LeBron on it was a real slap in the face.

Dr. Buss wasn't much better towards the end of West's tenure as GM
Considering the Lakers did a one sentence statement on his death that had a vibe of "We are glad he's dead", I honestly wouldn't be shocked if they only do a 2 second tribute video and then act like he never existed.
