    Hi Gary, thanks for the great video. I am 67 years old and I am learning to weld. I wear progressive lens glasses and really appreciate your efforts in this demo. I think my glasses should be ok as the working distance for welding coincides with my head tilt angle, but will try the cheater lens if any difficulties arise. I have decided to buy this helmet, just before viewing your video. Now, I am fully convinced with your thumbs up. As a seasoned veteran, your opinion matters. Cheers !

      Thank you Charles. Sometimes the weld location makes it tough for me to get my progressives to work. Looking up under something for example.
      I want to learn TIG welding before I buy a TIG machine. I have done stick and MIG for decades. I was taking a TIG class but in the middle the COVID hit and they stopped. I made a video of me TIG welding in class by shoving my phone into the hood with me. :) It was not the best but I got a few shots. I found it the clearest to take my glasses off and use the cheater in the class. You will figure out the best combination. I have had mine 2 years and still enjoy it. Thanks for watching and the kind comments. I really appreciate it if I can help someone out.

    Easy to use works well with mig welder and plasma cutter. Came with a replacement battery, several inside and outside replacement clear shield pieces, carrying bag. Also has a great warranty. Warranty is the reason I paid the extra over cheaper ones. You get what you pay for in life and there's no short cuts either

      The prices just keep going up. I got this one for $230 for the black one. The ones with the designs were more. That was only 4 years ago. But for 35+ years I welded I just had a fixed lens and when I went to get my first auto darkening I wanted the large viewing lens and a good one. Thanks for watching.

      @@GaryForgingOn yes everythings going up but the pay. I've been thinking about grabbing one of the yeswelder panorama auto helmets but hate to let go of a hunerd.
      I use to drill under highways and welding was a part of my living.

    Thanks for showing the arc shot, I've been wondering what the new style true color lenses look like. My Miller Elite lens has finally died and it is time to get an upgrade. The Viking might be a winner!
    This is not a criticism just a suggestion, but welding while sitting might not be your best choice. When we sit we tend to lean our heads too far into the weld which is alot of strain on the neck and back as well as all that smoke up your hood into your eyes and lungs ( you already have the respirator, of course! ). Standing makes us tend to straighten up and pull your face out of the puddle. It'll take some getting used to after 30 years of using old gear and habit, but the new lens will help!
    Also unlike with mig or TIG where breezes can blow away your shielding gas, you should get yourself a small fan and "suck" the smoke away from you and the puddle. Alot of guys use the fan to blow towards them which will mess up your shielding gasses with mig or tig, but you can use the fan to suck the smoke away and not disturb the gas coverage.
    Like I say, hope you dont mind my sayin' and, thanks for the demo!
    Peace!

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't mind you saying that at all. I usually do all my welding standing just because I have to move around so much to weld. I actually didn't even think about the sitting part but you are right. I don't weld as much as did in the past and my biggest issue now days is to find some combination of glasses/bifocals or no glasses or magnifying lens in my hood so I can see the puddle well. I end up getting closer to the weld now more than I used to. Just trying to see what I am welding. I just need a lot more practice time. I am going to weld up some holders to put some scrap on and just weld stringers over and over. I was stick welding the other day and was amazed how shaky my hand had become. Totally out of practice.
      Thanks for the tips though. I am one person that appreciates helpful tips. I need some kind of fan. Normally there is enough of a slight breeze through the shop to help with the smoke but some days it is just very still and I should get my small desk fan out and put it on the table to suck the smoke away. I have had issues with large fans while mig welding before so I know what you mean. I have even been stick welding both inside and outside and had strong gusts of wind mess up my stick welding. That was frustrating to have to grind it out and weld it again while hoping another gust didn't hit me.
      When I get more time to practice welding I want to film through the Lincoln more so I can show more of the actual welding and maybe do some different settings too.
      Thank you again.
      Gary

    I’m just a home diyer That has a cheap 90amp flux core welder at home for odd jobs. I did spend a few extra bucks and get a Lincoln Viking auto darkening. Even after installing new good batteries, I can’t seem to see the bead or weld puddle. And on thin metal (thicker than sheet metal) of course it burns through even on the low min setting because I’m looking for the puddle to form. (Yes I am in weld mode not grind mode - haha).
    Luckily I’ve not gotten flash burn because I made the sensitivity and delay settings as soon as I got it. I started with darkening setting of 10 and gone both ways but still not able to see the puddle. Any help would be appreciated!
    If I got a tombstone stick welder, would it stick weld small sheet metal jobs?

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have not done flux core in decades. With wire, stick and TIG . I can see all around the puddle. I weld MIG and stick on 10 and I had to move up to 11 with TIG.
      Delay and sensitivity will not help with seeing the puddle.
      I am not trying to sound like a jerk on this but I am sure you got all the protective films off. I only ask because I almost missed some. I never try to act like a jerk or make someone feel bad. I just did not have that problem so my best guess would be the flux wire. I have not tried it.
      I thought about making a video on stick welding thin metal. You can do it but it is tricky. The only way I had luck was using my regular small welding rod and breaking the flux off of another rod and feed that rod into the weld. Keep most of the arc on the other welding rod. I want to show that in a video if I can dig up a better way to video the arc shot. If you can find someone welding without flux that would let you watch might help too.

Not the best but you can probably look on my list and find the video. I learned welding on the job back in the 80s. So I have a lot of bad habits. But the best thing for beginning is try to get a class if you can. I have never done TIG welding and was taking a class but the COVID virus cancelled us meeting so I hope to finish. As another older guy who just tried an auto darken hood, I can relate. Was strange to be able to see as you strike an arc. I tried one from Yeswelder, as I can see the dials and grind/cut/weld controls better when they are mounted externally.

      I found I can see better taking my glasses off. Which is weird since I have wore them all my life and have bifocals. But when I was using it to TIG weld it was crystal clear. Mine is about 3 years old now and I like the newer ones because they mounted the grind mode switch on the outside. It is a bit of a pain to turn it to grind mode on the inside so I usually just use a face shield for grinding.

    • @JeffinTD
      @JeffinTD 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I have my eye on the new one too. Don’t know if I’ll be a fan of the hold the button down for 3 seconds- would prefer a dial or slider that you could move instantly with gloves on and know it is in the mode you intend. Wouldn’t take much more than 3 seconds to change to face shield.
      Anyhoo with partial cornea transplants and slight astigmatism in one eye, I do use glasses. May get a prescription to have safety glasses that are single focus right about 25”.

      It fits good. When I bring my hood down it actually hits the respirator but it hits right where the hood should stop anyway. My biggest problem is still trying to unlearn 35 years of old school welding habits. Even with the new auto-darkening hood I still leave my hood up and flip it down before I start welding most of the time. And I lift it up as soon as I finish to see. I lift it up just before the screen automatically lightens up. It is just a habit I need to break. Because of that I hit the mask more because I flip the hood up and down more. I hope that helps. It fits fine but it does hit on it right when it stops.

    sub'd👍👍
    thank you for the review.
    been lookin for a new hood. i first started with the pipeliner style hood, but its been very aggravating flippin it up and down. and to mention gettin flashed when i think my lense is down when i jerk my head to drop it. and now I'm in school for welding i need somethin more convenient and for a respirator. the pipeliner style is right at my nose and cant stand it anymore.
    great job sir.
    edit:
    also, how does it work with sweat??? when im lookin down at a 45° i sweat so much.
    are the controls sensitive to moisture? thats if you have experienced that. thank you

    i just got my new 3350 helmet page 2 in book says 1/2 way down page The cartridge provides protection from harmful UV and IR radiation , in dark and light states ! and on page 3 chart line 3 of chart it says UV/IR Protection Up to Shade DIN 16 at all times . Now it that true ????? date posted 11/12/2018 PLEASE REPLY

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you look below that line in the Chart on page 3 it shows that the specification for the Light State is from 3 to 5 . Then it has the Dark State listed as DIN 6 through 13. So it just appears to me that they stated in their general helmet information on page 2 that it covers both the light and dark settings in the cartridge which would be from 3 all the way through 13. Then in the Chart is says anything below DIN 16 is protected. Which is probably a full specification that shows it was made above what was needed for the cartridge.
      I am not a Lincoln expert on these but that is how I interpret those 2 statements. I hope this helps a little.

    Have you had any issues with eye strain? I have heard some people complaining about eye strain using the 3350 4c technology for long periods of time. But I've also heard people say nothing about eye strain and it claims to be easier on the eyes , I'm just curious I like how clear the 4c technology looks and want to buy one.

    • @GaryForgingOn
      @GaryForgingOn  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not used it for an entire day of welding yet. I have only used it on small projects. I have not heard of any eye strain but I guess it could happen. My guess would be the setting. The shade numbers on the dial are not notched so you can get off a little on the number. One day I thought it was real bright and clear and I looked and I had the dial more about 9 or 9.5 . I bumped it up to 10 and it was still a lot brighter and clearer than my old gold lens 10.
      I do computer work for a living and I know that if the monitors are too bright they seem to be easy to see but they actually strain the eyes more. I have had my eyes start twitching continuously for days and then I found out to turn the brightness on my screens down until they looked dull gray. I would think that would cause my eyes to strain more but it actually made the strain go away.
      I just wonder if someone was welding with the lens shade too light and caused strain. Just a guess though. I have welded with the 3350 for a few hours but then I stopped to do other things so that is not a good test.

      I have been trying to figure out the best mic system and back when I made this one I just had a lavaliere mic which picked up everything. The other problem is that I am using my phone to make my videos and I use an app to edit my videos and render them. All I can do is adjust all the sound up or down with that software. I cannot isolate just certain sounds and reduce them. So now I try to keep things quiet when filming like when I am forging I turn off my gas forge when I can when the video is not paused. Thanks for watching. I am trying to improve all the time. :)
