All day, everyday...I close my eyes and I'm right back there hanging on Castle Hill Avenue in the Bronx on a Saturday afternoon in the sunshine. The styles, the people, that Fender Rhodes sound and these grooves. Sad to hear about Paul's passing. I think Paul left the country about 5 years ago and I lost track of him. Herbie's Thrust album with Paul and Mike Clark still drops my jaw. Saw Mike Clark (ex Headhunter's Drummer) a few years back and he is still killin' it.
Paul Jackson's funk pushed Herbie and Bennie to places they could never get to without him. He will be studied and copied and loved by bass players forever. I have a theory that every bass player can remember details of the exact moment they 1st heard Spank-a-Lee, it's a life changing experience for most of us....
James Levi plays a straight and dry beat, like Harvey Mason was doing in that famous George Benson live concert, and with the rim shot grip like James Gadson was doing to get this super short and dry snare sound. Dont want to compare those brilliant Headhunter drummers, i love them all.
PAUL JACKSON every time I hear him (playing conservative here they all are)he is old school phunk no thumb just playing the instrument. Check out Spider on VSOP live wow.

Yes Miles,Herbie Hancock, Donald Byrd were the among,if not the first,to go into the late 1960s and 1970s funk/soul era with jazz funk... Hits immediately because the public loved the sound. Gato Barberi, The Jazz Crusaders, Bob James, Roy Ayers, Ronnie Laws, George Benson all had highly successful singles and heavy radio rotation during the 1970s.. Lonnie Listen Smith, Norman Connors, Pharoh Sanders,Grover Washington. Quincy Jones produced a few hit jazz funk lps of his own in the 1970s. There's others I've left off the list but there were some greats that did the music well. A few had gold and platinum albums when 1970s fm radio and albums sales changed the industry.

Really appreciate the old commercials at the end too. Really adds to the vibe.
Wah-Wah Watson’s incomparable, atonal staccato accent at 6:02 as heard all over Herbie’s “Steppin’ In It” and others from Man-Child. That sound brings back so many feelings as it cues a ton of the key changes on that album.
My uncle Wah Wah played on over 300 hits with same guitar a Gibson L5 he got from Ray Parker jr! Pa Pa Was a Rolling Stone, Let’s Get it on, Smiling Faces, Car Was etc. RIP!!!!!!
Paul Jackson was the Paul Chambers of hard funk. Every note in it's place and never over exegeratreted...! Wah wah Watson rhythm guitar king! Damn I still miss these empererors!!!
Wah Wah is my uncle and you are right! His influence is massive and surely missed! RIP!!!
The world needs a show like this again... I remember this show in the 70's
What else can be said?....geez...hard-hitting FUNK by a jazz Master!...RIP to the departed bc they left such a blazing trail!.....those still here like Herbie, and Bennie....deserve all the love! O wee!
Funk was everywhere . It's such a musicians medium. Also those commercials are twisting my mind even though I don't remember one of them
Amazing that a jazz concert broadcast would have so many ads targeting women. Those were the days!
12:44 !!!!
Unshakable groove!! Rest in Peace Paul Jackson..............
Good grove back in the day.
Aside from bringing me back to those heady times (pun intended) and the groundbreaking sounds we were all treated to, I can't help but remember the ads from back then! Talk about a flashback! LOL! Have always loved Paul Jackson raw and elemental bass playing too! :)
If anything could encapsulate how authentically groovy were the 70's, this is it.
Not only is herbie an excellent pianist but excellent at choosing people to work with and he dont rule the show the whole time he comes in and out and when he is out he holds up the rest as a musician should do. In the perfect band u cannot tell who is the star
Perfect match 👌🏼
P.S. A time code - a great help,.. by the way - thanks therefore !
P.P.S. The (of course censored;) joke guy and commercials sequence, actually the freaky but so cool :D smashed me so good !!!
Taken on a voyage with the Headhunters.....drop me off when your done.
I like how each musician adds their own licks into the song, without overstepping. They add just enough to complete, not takeover. You can hear each one of them, separately. Good stuff.
Never seen footage of James Levi drumming before. Incredible pocket!
thanks for saying his name. i've never heard of him before but he's great!
I worked with him for a bit some years ago. I’m 24 but he tried to help me (I’m a drummer) the most and he gave me great points!!
underrated comment
Being praised for keeping 'up to date' with new sounds, even back then! :)
Amazing music beautiful grooves
So smooth... RIP Paul Jackson. I was just jamming the bass line to Mayonnaise today. Super fun stuff to play.
Paul Jackson and (the recently deceased) Wah Wah Watson SLAYING IT here. Not to mention Herbie always treading new ground..
Do you know who is on bass? Alphonso Johnson?
j s as Loren said, Paul Jackson on bass, with James Levi on drums. Alphonso played with Weather Report between Miroslav Vitous and Jaco, and made awesome LPs and tours with George Duke and Ndugu, not to mention George Duke Billy Cobham live album with Sco
Loren White FWIW, Paul's my ex-brother-in-law, and he and Levi schooled me in "the Oakland Lay", introduced me to Jaco, and schooled my pale posterior in a variety of ways- Jaco and Paul's mutual admiration society was intense, and funny. never asked either to weigh in on Slim, tho expect he was afforded "hella player" status by the ringleaders
Wah wah is the man! Just discovered his music not long ago, great to see him here with Herbie
Wah Wah is my uncle!!! He literally played countless session and his sound can still be heard on radio and TV!! RIP Melvin Ragin!!!!!
You got Herbie Hancock. Tons of lights. And a dude stone cold grooving, in a chair, wearing a Gilligan hat. I'm in!
Wah Wah Watson. That's Wah Wah Watson.Ok?
@@nigelstansfield1644 Cool man. Calm down. I would have gone by the name Reverend Gilligan Hat, but that'll work.
It’s wonderful that Herbie expanded the minds of Kirshner’s audience with different music.
Amazing performance! Thank you so much, Mr. Hancock for the years of incredibly inspiring music and soul. RIP to Mr. Paul Jackson - truly one of the all-time greats. Much love.
Wow. When we were kids we were surrounded by masterpieces and didn't even know it. We liked a little bit of everything. Rock, jazz, soul, latin and R&B. That Headhunters album was in everyone's collection that I knew. We were teenagers!
The golden age. Fusion, innovation, talent and good weed
Genius! Introduced my students to this masterpiece so I really enjoyed my 50th birthday party as a result. Saw them at The Victoria Theatre London around 1974 I think it may have been. What a supreme inspiration...
Bennie is so awesome !!
I have just listen (over n over again) to your genius work Headhunters... I have't heard this for about 12 years!!!! You are such a beautiful-ineffable-musikal shaman/wizard! Love you cozmik brother!!! You make me happy and all your grand friends/musical wizards!!! Much love, new creations and positive enrgies to yu always!!! :+) xxxxx
It don't get much better than this.
I remember when i use to go in the living room by myself and listen to the headhunter album and just float around town in my mind hell i couldnt drive at the time but the sound definitely took me to another place❤💯 Respect to the great Herbie Hancock
Great to to see some footage of a secrets esq line up ! An album that really inspired me as well as Headhunters, Thrust and Manchild.
one of the greatest basslines ever. So smooth and funky. Sophisticated.
R.I.P. Paul Jackson
Thank You
All day, everyday...I close my eyes and I'm right back there hanging on Castle Hill Avenue in the Bronx on a Saturday afternoon in the sunshine.
At a time when everything is going to crap around the world, I needed to hear this. 🙏
James Levi plays a straight and dry beat, like Harvey Mason was doing in that famous George Benson live concert, and with the rim shot grip like James Gadson was doing to get this super short and dry snare sound. Dont want to compare those brilliant Headhunter drummers, i love them all.
That funk is unparallelled. A beacon of Funk for generations to come. Eons on Funk.
Qué felicidad para mi corazón esta música tan maravillosa. Gracias Herbie ❤️
Some greasy funky music...so good. When any musician asks me "how do I get my time down"...I tell them listen to the Head Hunters and groove.
Can you even fathom a show like this now?
Yes. th-cam.com/video/ferZnZ0_rSM/w-d-xo.html
Not on network television. Heck you can't even hear it on XM anymore.
I witnessed one last Friday!
Don't forget "Night Flight", that was on what was known at the time The USA Network! Peace.
A big fat NO !!!!
Just glad this exists and can be shared with anyone online
Herbie @ 8:49 playing what everybody is trying to figure out how to play in 2020...
DOES MUSIC GET BETTER THAN THIS?
Yes
Was this sampled somewhere? Quoted somewhere? Sounds really familiar.
Sounds like the beginning of Cory Henry’s sole on Lingus, we like it hear, Snarky puppy.

Tufload Wah Wah Watson plays guitar, sir. Paul Jackson plays bass.
Thanks for setting me straight friend
Love and ineffable vibrations always to you Herb!!! you make me tingle a always!!!!
This performance sounds so modern and it's ancient like me hahaha! I was born 13 days prior to this show.
Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. Exciting and calming at the same time. Words fail to describe.
Always enjoy seeing Herbie Hancock clips ... the vintage commercials at the end was a nice little bonus.
Crazy, I was thinking of 'Gentle Thoughts' today and this magically came up. Thank you Herbie!
Seems like just yesterday I was unwrapping this album cover and putting it on my turntable. Herbie Hancock should have a lot more subscribers; he's a genius.
THAT’S how to play rhythm guitar! Tasteful, driving, perfect.
Brilliant, Wah-Wah is so cool, even Herbie thinks so!
I enjoyed not only Herbie's solo but also the old TV commercial of 70's in this video
Herbie + Rhodes = 70s Magic!🎹
one of my best music experiences - Headhunters Live 78 in Hannover,Germany - i like H + Hs stuff - America can be proud - this is one of the ways in that Future that we need all ....
Thank you very much Mr. Herbie for this concert the day of my 20 years on the day of my birthday, my 2 years of guitar, I understand why I was there was addicted
This video is absolutely amazing
Pure funk jazz rock and soul
Secrets was such a masterful album. Hancock is without a doubt a genius. And Bennie Maupin is a woodwind god!
A master musician who hit the feel-good jackpot on Secrets with these seriously groovy players. Loving this
Back when smooth jazz had that spicy heat. The fusion was really flying high then...Miles opened up jazz when he did bitches brew. I can listen to this all day and night.
You know it was Jazz Funk in the 1970s, then dubbed Smooth Jazz
in the 1980s .
Be cool
I was wondering how I could feel more fresh and feminine. Thanks, Carefree!
