I bought a H&R model 158 Topper with the 30-30 and 20 gauge barrel combo for a hundred bucks from a guy who just got married and his new wife didn't like guns back in about 1993. Only used the twenty gauge a couple of times but I put a H&R scope mount on the 30-30 barrel and mounted an old Weaver 4x scope on it and used it for my deer rifle. What a tack driver! probably the most accurate gun I have ever owned. Put many a deer in the freezer with it. My older sons make fun of me for using it. Old fat man with a little gun! But old fat man is the first one dragging out a nice buck from the timber opening morning and they aren't laughing then. Hand loaded some 170grn Hornady SST bullets for it and they work great. "One shot one kill". Now one of my son's wants it for his son and I told him he can have it when I die but until then it still goes with me to the timber during deer season.
Dont forget the safety of that transfer bar between the hammer and firing pen. It wont fire without physically pulling the trigger and that makes it possibly the safest gun ever manufactured.
The 158 wone of my first guns 20Ga&30-30 I was 16 old had a lot cent now 61 yung still got 5 H&R 13 Barrels fit 2 of them I go hunting that's what I grab. Love them.
I just got one at an auction! after a $20 FFL I spent $90 on it and I think its a neat gun. I have the 20 gauge variant, I didn't know that you can swap the barrels out
i was at my local gun shop today and saw this model for $125. i really wanted it but i dont know much about it. the more im finding out the more i want it! i think im heading back for sure!

Among the many dumb trades or sales involving firearms over the last forty some years that I have made involved trading off a H&R in .45-70 and 12Ga. I've yet to find a better "pack gun" that served more than one purpose.
How do I know which topper model Herrington Richardson 20 gauge that excepts a 30-30 barrel?? I bought one a 20 gauge and want put a rifle barrel on it can you help me ??
I think it has to be the model 158 Topper to accept the other rifle caliber barrels but I don't know for sure !! I own the Topper model 58 12 gauge which is more than enough to kill anything in North America and I also bought those gun adapters to shoot .22LR, .22Mag, .38Spec, 9mm, 45Colt , .410Bore and 20 gauge and the muzzle loader adapter as well so it is the MOST versatile gun I got and will never get rid of it for it was a Santi Clause gift back in 1978 and the gun was made in 1977 and is still near mint condition !!!
I would like to find barrels for my H&R shotgun i have. it is a 410. the thing that is different with mine it is a snap lock for arm. anyone have a direction i can go to find some? Thank You.

I got mine when I was a teen in 1972 or 73 for Xmas. Still have it. Great gun. Simple no nonsense.

Yes you can always shoot shorter shells than then chamber indicates but not the other way around
