Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!! I will be applying a lot of the same techniques for the raised beds I just built. But you sold me specifically on the elevated psi being sent to the beds before further pressure reduction, as well as a valve at each bed to throttle the water up or down for watering adjustments. I was planning on installing a blow-out at each bed to get the water out of the lines, ( with the assist of compressed air), but again agree with you that it might be better to disconnect and hang them up in a more controlled environment for the winter. Great info. Thanks. I think I'll try the drip tape. The new boxes looked awesome. I did notice, in the latter part of the video, pressure treated wood used with the narrow and older boxes. Probably not a good idea, even if it was just used to tie the corrugated steel panels together. It wears off and mixes with the soils.

In regards to the other raised beds with pressure treated wood and corrugated steel, the previous owners were the ones who built them or had them built, we just inherited them. We haven't had the time nor the energy to replace them just yet but may do so in the future.

You are incredible! The last 2 videos are outstanding & so helpful! Gave me so many valuable things that I need to have in my raised bed garden. I do need to have a taller bed, but I can put rock or preferably something that will eventually turn into a compost to take up some volume of the bigger bed.
Glad you found the video helpful, if you have logs, branches, leaves, etc. on hand, you can do a semi hugelkultur method to take up extra space in a deep bed.
Looks neat and competent. My hesitation is at the end of season if you want to refresh and turn the soil over it gets in the way and you have to disturb it and replace in back in place every year or season you turn the soil. I like how they work but will stick with hose and watering can for now as my beds are not large nor numberous. Your installation is really great looking.
We don't turn over our soil, we cut out our plants at the soil line and leave their roots in place to decompose and turn into organic matter. To amend our soil in between seasons, we sprinkle amendments over the top of the soil, lightly scratch it into the surface, add more compost on top for added mulch and we are good to go.

I really enjoyed the video , I want to install a drip system like yours , but my water supply Is rather far from my raised beds . I would need to use a raised platform with 50 gal water barrels on them to supply my water, my garden is about 20’ x 24’ , I am just concern about the height of the platform to make sure that all my plants get water . Would you have any idea on how high the platform need to be for this to work . Thanks for any ideas or improvements to my system to make it work . Thank you JimE.
Just discovered your video, Very good info. As a suggestion you can eliminate the PVC primer when using "Blue Glue." Most PVC glue is clear. The reason your glue is blue is because it contains its own primer. You can save time and money.

Thank you again for this video my wife and I are planing on 7 4'x8' raised beads and will enclose the garden with 1/4" metal fabric on the ground to keep the gofers out and screen on the sides and on top to help keep out the crickets other bugs and birds out. We have a 40 psi regulator at the main valve where the water enters the garden via PVC pipes so we have good pressure reaching each bed. Drip tape however needs to be further reduced to 8-15 psi depending on what type of drip tape you are using so we have a 15 psi regulator in each bed as well. If you were to use a 15 psi regulator at your main water valve, you wouldn't get enough water pressure to your beds to successfully irrigate them. Hope that helps and good luck on your project.
That is metal edging that we used to outline our garden to delineate the space and create a border for our perennial plants that are planted along the fence line.
Someone at a local nursery told me that pressure reducers need water flow or they may be damaged. Wondering if you heard anything like that and if so, would it be better to put the shutoff valve before the pressure reducer? Thx, and great video!
One more thing. The Senninger Pressure regulator valve you showed in your tutorial was installed backwards. The white end is the outlet and the black end iconnects to the source. Thanks again for a great tutorial.

Greetings I built a raised bed garden and ordered exact supplies in this video. My bad is completed and ready for veggies. My question is what is your recommended watering schedule? Thanks for your time and consideration in advance.
The number or times and duration of the watering really depends on the climate that you live in. If you live in an area with dry summers but frequent temperatures in the 90's and 100's, you may have to water more often and longer than someone who lives in North Carolina who may still experience hot temperatures, but still receives occasional rain. We have our drip setup to water twice a week on Tuesday and Friday and we run the irrigation system for about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes. Our summer temperatures are typically in the high 60's to high 70's with overnight lows in the 50's. The best way to figure out your schedule is to water for a set amount of time and for the next few days, check your soil moisture and see how well it retains the moisture, you don't want it to dry out but you don't want it to be soggy either. A good inch or two of mulch on top (we us a barky compost) will also help your soil retain its moisture and protect your drip tape from the sun.

I'm so glad I found you on youtube! Many vids on creating raised garden beds, but you are the first that I found that discussed setting up drip irrigation.. Question: what if I bury the drip tube into the bed? Say 6" I'm in NJ, this will save me having to take it out for the winter and for root veggies it might be better?
I am not sure if burying the drip tape only 6" is enough for a NJ winter. I believe the best practice for any drip irrigation system in cold climates is to clear all the tubing and valves of water before freezing weather hits, removing the irrigation system from the garden and storing them indoors through the winter will also extend the life of your irrigation system. Our drip tape is usually under an inch or so of mulch but it was left uncovered to illustrate the system and set up for this video.
The beds are worked into the gravel so there isn't much gravel below each bed, either way, we have had raised beds on or around gravel for the last 10 plus years and have never had an issue.
I noticed that at ur last home u made a video installing soaker hose irrigation to ur beds. So what made u switch over to drip irrigation in ur new beds? Pro’s & Con’s would be super helpful please. Thank u so much for ur amazingly beautiful videos!
Hey there! We still love those soaker hoses and use them in a few extra large (100 gallon) grow bags that we have set up. The main consideration was cost. The BPA free soaker hoses are a bit pricey (even mores o over the last couple of years) and the cost would have probably been 10x as much to outfit all 19 of our raised garden beds with them vs drip tape supplies. The drip tape is also easier to customize, though the the 50 ft soaker hoses did fit quite nicely in 4x8' beds like we have (it may be more difficult for other folks with varying bed sizes to get that perfect fit and coverage). You could automate soaker hoses in a similar manner that we did here , where each bed has a main feed line from PVC or poly tubing, then screws onto the soaker hoses at each bed. In our old garden, we didn't really automate the soaker hoses and simply plugged a garden hose into two of them at a time (utilizing a hose splitter). So, for fewer raised beds, they're still a nice option - and require less cutting/assembling/fiddling than drip tape! One "con" of the soaker hoses is that they do tend to spray/spritz a bit, so you have to keep them covered in mulch to prevent that. The drip tape does not, so you can choose to cover it or not.
@@violettraine1029 PVC is used in drinking water systems so that one is safe for sure. I haven't been able to find any information on the drip tape or poly tubing as far as that goes.

At the 7:20 mark, you have a T instead of an elbow. Is there a reason for that? Won't water escape out the other side of the T vs. going up into the raised bed? Or did you cap it off and have it in case you ever want to add another line from that spot?
Hello Lani, good catch and yes, if there is a T we continue the main line to either connect another raised bed or we extended the line a bit further and capped it in case we want to tap into the line in the future as it leaves our options open. But yes, you don't want to leave a T at the end of the line.
You only need the 15 psi regulator if you are using drip tape in your beds. If you are using standard 1/2" drip tubing in your beds, you only need a 25 psi pressure reducer. We have found that you may need to use adapters to convert from 1/2" to 3/4" before converting back to 1/2". Thank you for posting this. I'm just starting my garden with my boys and we've watched this video several times now. Since you've been in your new place for over a year now, is there anything that you would change about your drip line irrigation? Also, how did you select your gravel and are you pleased with it?
We are very happy with our drip tape irrigation system and haven't thought about changing a thing about it. For the gravel, we like 3/8th inch gravel that can somewhat pack down and lock into itself. If you use round stones or rock like pea gravel, you will sink quite a bit as you walk around. We also see what gravel is available at our local bulk landscape supply companies, sometimes take samples home, to see what would work in the area and how it looks in the space. Hope that helps.
Fantastic job of covering drip irrigation. However, you have missed a link in your supplies: the Perma-Loc shutoff valve that you use right after the 15 psi reducer.

Do you have a main controller that automates your various drip or irrigation stations already? We have Hunter brand controllers linked in the caption and ours just has a small solar panel attached to the side of it that is wired to the controller itself. It may be easiest to have an irrigation specialist to set it up for you depending on what you have to work with already.

@@mishagutkin4666 That part of the system was already set up when we moved to the property so it isn't something we had to mess with. Although we did add two additional stations to the main drip irrigation header for our new garden area. There are various solar panels on Drip Depot's site for the main irrigation controllers but it may be best to have an irrigation specialist out so they can tell you your options and what may work best for your specific situation.
I've just started thinking and researching irrigation so I'm curious if you can use the faucet off your house as the main water supply? Or what is the best way to obtain water for this method in a garden? I apologize if this is an obvious thing I've just never looked into irrigation for my garden until recently.
You can definitely use any faucet or spigot you have available! I just added a link to the 4-in-1 faucet adapter in the caption here (which includes a backflow device, pressure reducer, filter, and drip tubing connector) plus the hose bib timer you can use to automate the system too. You can even attach a garden hose for additional length if needed first, then add that adapter and swap to drip! The backflow will protect your main house potable water supply, and the pressure reducer will make it fit for drip. Check out this video too: it shows us running drip from a faucet. You are incredible! The last 2 videos are outstanding & so helpful! Gave me so many valuable things that I need to have in my raised bed garden. I do need to have a taller bed, but I can put rock or preferably something that will eventually turn into a compost to take up some volume of the bigger bed.
Glad you found the video helpful, if you have logs, branches, leaves, etc. on hand, you can do a semi hugelkultur method to take up extra space in a deep bed.
Looks neat and competent. My hesitation is at the end of season if you want to refresh and turn the soil over it gets in the way and you have to disturb it and replace in back in place every year or season you turn the soil. I like how they work but will stick with hose and watering can for now as my beds are not large nor numberous. Your installation is really great looking.
We don't turn over our soil, we cut out our plants at the soil line and leave their roots in place to decompose and turn into organic matter. To amend our soil in between seasons, we sprinkle amendments over the top of the soil, lightly scratch it into the surface, add more compost on top for added mulch and we are good to go.

I really enjoyed the video , I want to install a drip system like yours , but my water supply Is rather far from my raised beds . I would need to use a raised platform with 50 gal water barrels on them to supply my water, my garden is about 20’ x 24’ , I am just concern about the height of the platform to make sure that all my plants get water . Would you have any idea on how high the platform need to be for this to work . Thanks for any ideas or improvements to my system to make it work . Thank you JimE.

Just discovered your video, Very good info. As a suggestion you can eliminate the PVC primer when using "Blue Glue." Most PVC glue is clear. The reason your glue is blue is because it contains its own primer. You can save time and money.

Thank you again for this video my wife and I are planing on 7 4'x8' raised beads and will enclose the garden with 1/4" metal fabric on the ground to keep the gofers out and screen on the sides and on top to help keep out the crickets other bugs and birds out. We have a 40 psi regulator at the main valve where the water enters the garden via PVC pipes so we have good pressure reaching each bed. Drip tape however needs to be further reduced to 8-15 psi depending on what type of drip tape you are using so we have a 15 psi regulator in each bed as well.
If you were to use a 15 psi regulator at your main water valve, you wouldn't get enough water pressure to your beds to successfully irrigate them. Hope that helps and good luck on your project.

Someone at a local nursery told me that pressure reducers need water flow or they may be damaged. Wondering if you heard anything like that and if so, would it be better to put the shutoff valve before the pressure reducer? Thx, and great video!
One more thing. The Senninger Pressure regulator valve you showed in your tutorial was installed backwards. The white end is the outlet and the black end iconnects to the source. Thanks again for a great tutorial.

Greetings I built a raised bed garden and ordered exact supplies in this video. My bad is completed and ready for veggies. My question is what is your recommended watering schedule? Thanks for your time and consideration in advance.
The number or times and duration of the watering really depends on the climate that you live in. If you live in an area with dry summers but frequent temperatures in the 90's and 100's, you may have to water more often and longer than someone who lives in North Carolina who may still experience hot temperatures, but still receives occasional rain.
We have our drip setup to water twice a week on Tuesday and Friday and we run the irrigation system for about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes. Our summer temperatures are typically in the high 60's to high 70's with overnight lows in the 50's. The best way to figure out your schedule is to water for a set amount of time and for the next few days, check your soil moisture and see how well it retains the moisture, you don't want it to dry out but you don't want it to be soggy either. A good inch or two of mulch on top (we us a barky compost) will also help your soil retain its moisture and protect your drip tape from the sun.

I'm so glad I found you on youtube! Many vids on creating raised garden beds, but you are the first that I found that discussed setting up drip irrigation..
Question: what if I bury the drip tube into the bed? Say 6" I'm in NJ, this will save me having to take it out for the winter and for root veggies it might be better?
I am not sure if burying the drip tape only 6" is enough for a NJ winter. I believe the best practice for any drip irrigation system in cold climates is to clear all the tubing and valves of water before freezing weather hits, removing the irrigation system from the garden and storing them indoors through the winter will also extend the life of your irrigation system.
Our drip tape is usually under an inch or so of mulch but it was left uncovered to illustrate the system and set up for this video.

Gravel under soil? What an idea! I might go for concrete.
The beds are worked into the gravel so there isn't much gravel below each bed, either way, we have had raised beds on or around gravel for the last 10 plus years and have never had an issue.
I noticed that at ur last home u made a video installing soaker hose irrigation to ur beds. So what made u switch over to drip irrigation in ur new beds? Pro’s & Con’s would be super helpful please. Thank u so much for ur amazingly beautiful videos!
Hey there! We still love those soaker hoses and use them in a few extra large (100 gallon) grow bags that we have set up. The main consideration was cost. The BPA free soaker hoses are a bit pricey (even mores o over the last couple of years) and the cost would have probably been 10x as much to outfit all 19 of our raised garden beds with them vs drip tape supplies. The drip tape is also easier to customize, though the the 50 ft soaker hoses did fit quite nicely in 4x8' beds like we have (it may be more difficult for other folks with varying bed sizes to get that perfect fit and coverage). You could automate soaker hoses in a similar manner that we did here , where each bed has a main feed line from PVC or poly tubing, then screws onto the soaker hoses at each bed. In our old garden, we didn't really automate the soaker hoses and simply plugged a garden hose into two of them at a time (utilizing a hose splitter). So, for fewer raised beds, they're still a nice option - and require less cutting/assembling/fiddling than drip tape! One "con" of the soaker hoses is that they do tend to spray/spritz a bit, so you have to keep them covered in mulch to prevent that. The drip tape does not, so you can choose to cover it or not.

At the 7:20 mark, you have a T instead of an elbow. Is there a reason for that? Won't water escape out the other side of the T vs. going up into the raised bed? Or did you cap it off and have it in case you ever want to add another line from that spot?
Hello Lani, good catch and yes, if there is a T we continue the main line to either connect another raised bed or we extended the line a bit further and capped it in case we want to tap into the line in the future as it leaves our options open. But yes, you don't want to leave a T at the end of the line.
Helpful video! If we m using 1/2” drip line from the faucet, is there a 15 psi regulator for 1/2” in, 1/2” out?
You only need the 15 psi regulator if you are using drip tape in your beds. If you are using standard 1/2" drip tubing in your beds, you only need a 25 psi pressure reducer.
We have found that you may need to use adapters to convert from 1/2" to 3/4" before converting back to 1/2". For more in depth information and other alterations you can make, check out our article on the topic:

Thank you for posting this. I'm just starting my garden with my boys and we've watched this video several times now. Since you've been in your new place for over a year now, is there anything that you would change about your drip line irrigation? Also, how did you select your gravel and are you pleased with it?
We are very happy with our drip tape irrigation system and haven't thought about changing a thing about it. For the gravel, we like 3/8th inch gravel that can somewhat pack down and lock into itself. If you use round stones or rock like pea gravel, you will sink quite a bit as you walk around. We also see what gravel is available at our local bulk landscape supply companies, sometimes take samples home, to see what would work in the area and how it looks in the space. Hope that helps.

Fantastic job of covering drip irrigation. However, you have missed a link in your supplies: the Perma-Loc shutoff valve that you use right after the 15 psi reducer.

Do you have a main controller that automates your various drip or irrigation stations already? We have Hunter brand controllers linked in the caption and ours just has a small solar panel attached to the side of it that is wired to the controller itself. It may be easiest to have an irrigation specialist to set it up for you depending on what you have to work with already.

@@mishagutkin4666 That part of the system was already set up when we moved to the property so it isn't something we had to mess with. Although we did add two additional stations to the main drip irrigation header for our new garden area. There are various solar panels on Drip Depot's site for the main irrigation controllers but it may be best to have an irrigation specialist out so they can tell you your options and what may work best for your specific situation.

I've just started thinking and researching irrigation so I'm curious if you can use the faucet off your house as the main water supply? Or what is the best way to obtain water for this method in a garden? I apologize if this is an obvious thing I've just never looked into irrigation for my garden until recently.
You can definitely use any faucet or spigot you have available! I just added a link to the 4-in-1 faucet adapter in the caption here (which includes a backflow device, pressure reducer, filter, and drip tubing connector) plus the hose bib timer you can use to automate the system too. You can even attach a garden hose for additional length if needed first, then add that adapter and swap to drip! The backflow will protect your main house potable water supply, and the pressure reducer will make it fit for drip. Check out this video too: it shows us running drip from a faucet.
