    it's so nice when responsible owners ask for help relatively soon and then they put in the work. and I love it that Victoria emphasises it that it's the OWNERS who do the work, and it's not some miracle that just happens overnight

    Speaking as someone who also raised a gsd puppy during lockdown, I sympathize. I would take a bullet for my dog but I wouldn’t re-live his puppyhood for anything. The difference is I didn’t have a partner or children so I was able to devote all of my time to helping my dog learn manners and bite inhibition. A gsd puppy is a full-time job.

    • @m6666
      @m6666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      Actually, all puppies are full time work. You have to put the work in training in order to see results, then you'll have a happy, well adjusted friend for many years. Yes, there will always be setbacks but as long as you keep at it you will be greatly rewarded with a great dog.

      @@m6666 no, sorry having raised two German Shepherd pups, it's hard work. More than other breeds I have raised. You need to be the boss and they continually test you. A G. Shep is not for everyone. They are a great dog, but you need to put in the hard, long work!

    • @m6666
      @m6666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@Myrcella_Rykker I know how much work they are, I've had one. But try raising a Vizsla puppy, that even after three hours of exercise, including one and half of that time running with 20 other dogs non stop and you get home and he then spends the rest of the night throwing his toys around. I used to take him trail riding with my horse for five or six hours and he still wasn't tired. Did obedience trialling with him and agility and even had him trained for retrieval trials. The one thing he really fought me on, was submitting to me for the drop position, I couldn't get him to do that till he was 16 months old, and yes I tried every trick in the book. Even professionals couldn't get him to do it. So, yes, I do know how much work goes into training dogs and I have to say shepherds are pretty damn easy bc they're highly intelligent and really love to work and please.

      I let my dog go outside without a lease to do her business and whatnot she knows not to leave the street. When I was visiting my mom her gsd saved her from getting beat up by this dog that has a reputation for being a "bully"
      My dogs less then 20 pounds and that dog was much bigger then mine. After that happened I made sure either me or my mom was outside with her. (or my mom's gsd) most of the dogs there are either old or tied. And if only ones wondering why I don't just tied my dog.. basically everyones dog is loose in my hometown.
      The dogs in my neighborhood are perfectly fine with her. As for cars she doesn't usually chase them. When she does I tied her for a few days. I trust my dog more then most drivers in my town...

      She uses positive reinforcement and negative punishment.
      Reinforcement is encouraging a behaviour and punishment is not encouraging a behaviour.
      Positive is adding a stimulus (treats, petting, encouragement, play, toys, etc...) and negative is removing said stimulus.
      She reinforces the human/animal relationship.

When he was a puppy, an ex girlfriend who's great with dogs watched him and assisted with some training while I was at work. Coming home after working 12hrs and having to devote 3 more hours to him was rough, but I knew it would pay off and i really enjoy it. For 9 months he's well trained. One of the challenges of training dogs is thinking like a dog. Thinking like a human, it makes sense that being pushed away with arms and legs is a "bad thing". But to a dog, this can be seen as a reward for its behavior.

    • @melissagoodman1833
      @melissagoodman1833 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      *Moderator* Some dogs don't like water and grooming can be incredibly stressful. Anytime a dog doesn't like something, it's our job to break it down into small steps to help them build a more positive association. "Stubbornness" is more of a human way of thinking that we project onto dogs when there is always an underlying reason whether that being stress/fear, not knowing what to do/not understanding something, as well as the human thinks, frustration, etc.
      Hope that helps clarify.

    I'm on my 3rd and 4th German Shepherds. They are not dogs for the timid or soft-voiced owner; these are highly intelligent dogs. Unless you set the boundaries and the rules from the beginning, and the dog sees you as the leader through voice and action, the dog will take over and begin running you. Which is what happened to this couple. The walk was incredible; letting the dog pull like that injures the trachea. This couple was totally out of their depth. Thank goodness for Victoria.

      @melissagoodman1833 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      *Moderator* Yes, it is very important to teach a dog what you want from them and German Shepherds are incredibly intelligent working dogs. The idea of needing to show them that you are the leader and being stern to avoid them taking over is part of some outdated philosophies that we know now to be untrue- that's more of a human construct. Dogs simply repeat behaviors that work and will develop behaviors that humans find undesirable if their needs are not met properly.

    I have 4 German Shepherds and all of them are really well mannered. The one thing you need to know is to give them proper training and teach them manners when they are puppies cause once they cross the 4 month mark they are a bit hard to train. I usually never take out my dog until they are calm. I stand in front of my gate and wait until they are calm before going for a walk or run and they also need a lot of physical activity to keep them calm

    My GSD is also one year old , but thanks god I trained him well from 12 wks , walks right beside me .But I remember those puppy days… I was crying , so frustrated, I thought the puppy hates me but I kept going . Looked for help online and just kept going with training, persistence was the key. All the craziness ended around 6 mo . Now my sweat and tears paid off.
    But still full time job until 3 yrs old.
    Phoenix is good , food motivated , easy to train .

    I’ve been watching so many of these videos, I have a lab/retriever that is going on one that is my best friend. She has be so great with me and my little boy with autism, but she struggles with other dogs, cats, and squirrels. I got her last December, and she had spent all but her first 8 weeks or so living in a shelter, and they didn’t socialize her well. It’s been hard for me to find anyone to help me work with her that has another dog. I have a ton of medical issues and my little boy has autism, and she has been amazing with all of that. She instinctively knows when I’m in pain and she’ll come cuddle up with all her weight on my stomach, which is sometimes the only way the pain gets better. I just want her to have a happy life and have other dog friends. I feel like she just doesn’t know what to think of them, she did pull me off my feet a couple times before I switched her to a harness and got more control over her when it comes to sitting and all that. I just want to give her the best.

      @tinyflame17 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikesManCave you can search it up if you wish.
      The study normally used to support the idea of dominance in dogs was a study about Gray Wolves. Some Gray Wolves that didn’t know each other were put together in an enclosed space, and seemingly fought for control. But that doesn’t happen outside of captivity. Wolf packs are just families. No “alpha”, just two parents, maybe some yearlings, and the younger pups. The person that made the study later states this, and says that the original study was incorrect.
      Dogs also don’t form packs like wolves. They aren’t monogamous and the males don’t usually recognize pups as their own, much less protect or feed them. And dogs obviously don’t see us as other dogs, so even if they functioned with a hierarchy it wouldn’t apply to us. Every single behavior that Cesar calls “submission” is either learned helplessness (I can’t defend myself, so I’m just going to freeze/stop reacting) or appeasement behavior (I don’t want to fight but I’m afraid, so I’ll make myself as small/least threatening as possible by showing my stomach or giving a low tail wag).
      There’s literally nothing to back up dominance as something that actually exists in dogs. Why would they have evolved to want a hierarchy? They just do what works and what feels good, which is often not what we want them to.

    Loved the video! But would love more addressing on the nipping and jumping and nipping. I’m having this issue with my 5 month malamute puppy and regardless of what I do I can’t make him stop when he’s so into it since he sees it as playing.

    • @deadgame2098
      @deadgame2098 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you respond to it, the puppy will see that attention as a reward. Do what Victoria does in this video - turn and walk away from your dog. The less attention it gets when it nips, the more it'll realize that it won't get what it wants when it nips. Also try the 'touch' command as a way to positively redirect the energy. I promise you that teaching your dog that he won't get the attention he wants from you from biting, the less he'll do it. Another thing that can help is that when he tries to play-bite you, stuff a toy or a ball in his mouth before he grabs you. Show him what things are appropriate to nom on vs what is not. If he still tries to bite you, make a high-pitched yip sound. If he seems alarmed and backs away, it has worked. That high-pitched noise is what other dogs do to say 'ouch!' and teach each other when playing goes too far.

    • @deadgame2098
      @deadgame2098 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Sorry I've got more: another way to stop this behavior is to tire your dog out with lots of play, and also chew toys and puzzle toys. Redirect that energy away from you. My puppy (now three years old) had a biting problem but now he chews on his bones, and even when I rile him up he knows when to stop. When I play with him he is constantly 'sneezing', which is dog code for "I'm only playing with you, not fighting". If he accidentally bites too hard I pull away and he immediately stops the play. I promise you that redirection is the key to changing this behavior.

      I work at a dog boarding/training facility and we use the command “off” when they jump or bite/nip kind of push them off and say “off” in a very stern voice. German Shepherd is very loyal, caring and intelligent, but more emotionally replys on owner and desires more attention than many other breeds.

Reality is after 3 mo here she is still only 90pct housebroken, which was her actual problem i think. She is much less reactive, knows few commands drop it, look at me, stay but inconsistent. Barking is still extreme and must crate at nite. Ive put so many hours into it i could have used otherwise. Biggest issue is jumping and some play biting which scratches me up. I cant have my female pals help as im afraid for them. She also wont listen as well once outdoors.
