Well now I'm even more inspired to go explore. I can't wait until I retire so I can DRIVE out west and spend lots of time looking around, just relaxing and enjoying nature/life (and making photos of course). I have a full size 4x4 truck at the moment but in the future I envision a Subaru Outback turbo with some nice tires for my adventures.

My husband and I bought a cabin 3 years ago in Duck Creek and we are still exploring this area. Thank you for showing off the beauty of fall in the magnificent Dixie National Forest. You’ve given us more places to explore! Each season up here holds its own magic and you’ve captured these gorgeous Aspen so beautifully.

Really great useful information! Detailed! Love the use of viewing the maps and your notations! Nice, not obtrusive, music and not a lot of useless gabbing! Thank you for the information!

Thank you. You are one of the reasons I have reserved an Aptera solar vehicle. I am retired and love nature and historical sites. With a 1,000 mile range, I will be going to many of the places in videos.

Well, I don't know if I would be one of the "reasons", but the visuals I'm sure gave you some inspiration.

Very interesting and timely. We were just in that area last week. After visiting Cedar Breaks, we took UT143 past Panguitch Lake (which looks like a big fishing area) to US 89 and then south to UT12 to Bryce Canyon. I can see where the colors in that area would be spectacular. Will be back west at the end of Sept hoping to see some color in Colorado and New Mexico. Regards.

    Cliff,
I always enjoy your tours and great narration. Besides the beautiful color displayed, I noticed on the GAIA maps, road numbers displayed within a beehive motif.
Just out of trivia curiosity, is that what beehives actually looked like back in the day? These hive images look more like hornets nests... which kind of threw me.
Ok... I just looked it up. It is very ancient. Goes way way back. They were called "skeps". Early animated cartoons used to depict them this way which is why we are (were) familiar with this image.

Thanks Gord, I'm glad you're getting entertainment out of labor of love. Yea, I guess that's how natural bee hives look. But Utah's symbol goes back to the Mormon pioneers as outsiders would say, "those people are always as busy as bees"...or something like that. So that's why Utah is known as the beehive state.

@@BackRoadsWest1 Thanks Cliff. I didn't know that Utah is called the beehive state. It, of course, makes sense that they would use this symbol.
A "skep" is made of a series of rope rings, generally made of sisal. This allows the beekeeper to disassemble the hive when it is time to harvest. But it is not an efficient design by today's standards.
These go back to medieval times and even earlier than that in ancient Babylonia.

@@gorrdd so I didn't know that about rope rings being used to create hives. Thanks for passing that along. One other thing about Mormons being "busy as bees", a bee colony also works as a "collective", and so do people working together in the Mormon Church back in those days. So, the Utah pioneers were looked at as bees in more ways than one.

@@BackRoadsWest1 Thanks Cliff. I did a search online and it showed various ancient beehives and some with details of their construction. Not all skeps were built the same.
The ones using rope style rings were likely held together using beeswax on the inside in order to help attract the bees.
All these designs eventually morphed into what we see today.
Thanks for the references to the Morman's.

Absolutely beautiful. We've been nearby in the summer and early spring, but not for the fall colors. Is there any way to get a read on when the colors will start to appear and their duration? Thanks!

Nope, other than what we say in the video and blog post www.backroadswest.com/blog/fall-colors-above-cedar-city-utah/

we are planning to visit the area east of cedar breaks on the road you did in two parts. My question is "is there dispersed camping on that road?" Thank you.
