Chief! On carriers we have a 'portable crane' called a 'Tilley' to hoist aircraft which have somehow wandered off their wheels. But if you know the right people (the guys who go up the carrier's mast to service the radars) they will take you up to the top when in port just to see if you are brave enough to do the climb. The upper radars are about 200 feet above the waterline (the flight deck on my carrier was 60 feet above the waterline). The views are fantastic! You take a pair of your 'skivvies' (underpants for landlubbers who don't know the word) up with you just to hang up there long enough to take a photo. If you do the climb they award you a Certificate as a 'Skivvie Waver'. It is a very exclusive group. When I took my skivvies out of my pocket to hang up, there was a huge laugh from my shipmate-buddies who took me up (it was in San Diego). Before I went up I took a yellow-pen highlighter and colored in a 'Stain' in just the right location. Huge FUN onboard ship sometimes, it matches up with huge WORK. By the way, it was much more terrifying climbing down the mast than going up!!!
The stuff that some deck crews have to endure during a tour haha. Bless them all. I remember very vividly (wasn't a crane, by all means). Our boatwain had myself and another fellow greeze a total of 16 davits that ran around the cruise vessel. Had to roll them out with weights and hand crank them all up in one day. My arm feels sore and spinning just thinking about it. Great videos cheif.
So clean. From bridge to engine room. Hi chief . The first i want to send you and all crews member best wishes. I respect your knowledge . I'm vietnamese and i'm a chief engineer too. All ships on your vidieo are so nice. In the future if i have opportunity i want to join with you guys. Goodluck to you.
We had a few issues greasing pullys while stationary. The grease only ran to one side. I cured that real quick. I had the operator move the system 10 feet in each direction as I greased it. Problem solved.
Greasing of crane pa lang yan...mas mahirap pag nag change ng hoisting wire... Anyway, I always remember kung gaano kahirap nang trabaho sa Handymax bulk carrier 30 yrs ago....from cadet to master....matagal din akong nag cmate bago ako naging master...I acknowledge this video very much... thank chief makoi for your effort...
Good informative video of one of the hardest and dangerous jobs on board is hanging from a boatswain or bosun's chair to grease and paint on the heights ... and not all sailors dare !! ... even if you pay extra money , thank you because it reminds me of the many times I did that hard work 👍
Thanks Chief 😊 I love watching your videos.. thanks to some videos related in seaferers until I found your channel.. I watched your vlogs all days... more power to you Sir.. God Bless ... Not just subscribed... 👍 I ring the bell also ..
Ok. So I’m a crane operator and have been for years. Even on a ship called the BOB BARKER. It’s not hard . What you do chief is hard. What we do is easy piesy.
I drove a prototype tower crane that folded up and became a trailer, so the makers delivered it to site unfolded it and showed me the how to operate it. I checked the manual and like all cranes greasing was a daily or weekly affair. But the grease nipple I didn't like was 60ft up and 30ft out at the end of the jib, I refused to go out there and suggested fixing a tube to the bottom of the mast. This and several other grease points were tubed and a central grease point fixed, they named it after me.!!!! In those days an operator was paid an extra hours money per day, called greasing money to make sure all fluids etc. were topped up and the machine was fit to work.
They free climb that? No freaking way. I climb water towers and we have fall protection all the way up. I love your video. I have watched a lot of them. fascinating.
@@ChiefMAKOi We watch your videos at work. I have a workmate who was in the Navy and has a Filipino wife, they loved your vblog on the cook. You are a gifted filmmaker. Your channel is compelling and so watchable.

Salute sa inyo mga sir.... My on Board crane is quite hard to grease, we literally had to sit on the cable n grease it along the way. Any safest suggestion other than doing that? we tried this method but the cable still turn out to be little bit yellowish . Im just Deck rating but most the greasing part, we'll do it. ur help is much appreciated
Thank you for this dangerous and important work you do! You and the other workers should get paid the full value of your labour, and you should all control the ships, not the bosses who do no work and take so much money. That way, you could make the work environment safer for yourselves, because the cost of safety provisions would be paid by the very people the safety provisions are protecting!
_Chief Makoi I really enjoy watching your videos they are very educative, I would like to ask you, I have not navigated for more than ten years, I am an OICNW, what advice would you give me? Thank you for your time._
If you and your girl break up. Remember theirs always one in every port. Wear your glove and enjoy the ride. Ha,ha,ha. Tell the guys grease that bootie on tootie fruity.
Chief another question as u are cadet after u get eligibility for exams to become 4 engeener.. after then for 3 engineer u have to give exams?? or 3 engineer u get promotion?
Eligibility doesn't necessarily mean competence. Your license is just the minimum requirement. There are plenty of seafarers who have higher licenses but if you ask them a simple question regarding to normal jobs of one rank higher, they don't know how to answer. Learn everything you need first. When you are already confident you can perform the job of the next higher rank, then take the exam for higher license.
"eligibility doesn't necessarily mean competence". MAN, truer words were never spoken. Go for the guy who has 'mastery' and can answer your questions without delay or having to 'look things up', I had a guy on the carrier who knew every word in OPNAV Instruction 5510.1. He was worth his weight in gold! Also, he knew all the shortcuts too - legal and illegal. He always had the good sense to avoid the latter. But we had to be careful not to overload him. He was NOT the most senior - he was an E-5...!
Your men was greasimg the cables with bare hands maybe they wiped there hands with a rag but there hands are still dirty and going down that metal ladders and touching it with dirty hands is asking for someone down the road going up or down is waiting for a accident. No hand cleaner just rags is not well, safety first for the lives of all sea men

I LOVE that I got to hear the crews conversation! That was really cool!
This one reminds me of greasing the cables and general maintenance on the aircraft elevators on the aircraft carriers I served on.

Is that what they call it these days?
tanong ko lang boss pano kayo nag ggrasa ng mga pinon gear sa crane? binabaklas nyo ba o may grease fitting yun?
No wonder we had a hoist wire snap on the wharf the other day..... About 3% of that wire got inspected and greased.
Very easy for this job . I like this job
7:47 got me laughing so bad
I'm surprised that there wasn't a safety cage on the ladder, they had to be 20 feet or more above ground.
Do you have any doctor appointed in the ship. So that he can provide aid in case of accidents or treat any crew member with sickness?
None.
How to operate emrgency steering sir
Buwis buhay ah,ingat mga kababayan..

Bosun guys and Decks cadets are in charge of this work.
Thought to bear in mind whilst aloft,
Its not the fall that will kill you.
Its when you hit the deck.
YES, you are perfectly OK for 99.9 percent of the descent!!!

Usually after 5 years of no sea service, you have to repeat all of your training courses.
Is this deck or engineering task?
Deck

I’m surprised that an automatic greaser isn’t installed. If one exists.
Sir bawal po ba malabo mata sa barko?
Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
sir tanong ko lang kung anong kailangan na trainings, certifications pag nag apply international as deck ratings?
Mas mabuti check mo sa website ng MARINA para sigurado.

Usually sa mga company maximum 2x lang pwede mag cadet.
so pwedeng 3rd officer na sya 😊

Yes.
Magkano Po sahod Ng ratings?
Usually around 1K-1.5K USD depende sa rank at sa company. Merong companies mas mataas magbigay.
