    I'm 390#, short, big belly. I'm a kayak angler and currently use a nucanoe frontier 12. It's a great boat, but a bear to paddle. The LT has all the features I'm after and I love the hull design.
    The weight capacity is listed at 450 pounds. Being 390, will the LT still perform well? Stability, tracking, ease of paddling?
    With the increased rocker, does tracking suffer?
    Thanks!

    • @kayakflyfishingschool
      @kayakflyfishingschool  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should be good with your weight, just use the scupper plugs when not in moving water, they will help.
      The LT should still perform well in all attributes, the stability will be a bit better because you are short and your belly will put your center of balance lower in the kayak. Tracking will be better as well since you will have a bit more of the kayak surface in the water. Ease of paddling won’t be affected much at all, it will still be easier to paddle than the Frontier 12. I have had almost 609 lbs in it when cleaning up river and creek and it didn’t affect much, just a bit wobbly because I didn’t have the load balanced the best.
      The tracking does not suffer at all, they did a really great job of designing the hull to ensure water is asking as much of the hull as possible to get tracking to a great level.

    • @matthewbeckwith663

      @@kayakflyfishingschool thank you so much for this detailed response! I pulled the trigger and purchased the LT a few days ago. I know it will float me, and I'm on a weight loss journey. Hopefully next Spring I'm down 40 pound. I never though about how my body type put weight lower in the cockpit.
      So the LT floated 600 pounds?? Holy you-know-what.
      I'm head over heels with the hull design. The open deck reminds me of the Frontier, so that's a plus. I hated sitting high in the Frontier and the low seating options were flawed. For my needs, everything about the Frontier was fitting a square peg into a round hole. Its an awesome platform, though and maybe some I will add a motor. The low framed seat in the LT is another huge point of attraction for me.

    Donald, what length paddle are you using with this kayak, and would you change that length?

    • @kayakflyfishingschool
      @kayakflyfishingschool  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carson, I use a 245 cm paddle with this kayak with seat in regular position. When I add the seat riser I use a 255 cm paddle. That added height form the raised seat brings a bit more off the deck and farther from the water, so I increase the paddle length to ensure I get as much out of the effort as possible. I actually use an adjustable paddle so that I only have to have one paddle no matter what configuration I have with the seat and I can use that same paddle on multiple models of my fleet.

      Draft is around 6 -8” good for skinny water, but you have to keep in mind that the full length keel does protrude farther down in the aft. So you may need about a 10” depth to clear it.

    Thanks for the review. You stated it is a paddle kayak you can fish in rather than the other way around. Does it make a good fishing yak? Can you fish standing up? How much water comes up through scupper holes?

    • @kayakflyfishingschool
      @kayakflyfishingschool  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome.
      Yes you can fish from this kayak, it is an excellent fishing platform. I actually teach kayak fly fishing from this kayak. It is very stable, the clean and open deck allow you to get great footing and space to move your feet. Most people have no issues standing and fishing from this kayak. If you have a decent, not excellent, but decent balance you should be able to stand and fish with little to no issues at all.
      If you can find a place to test paddle one, please do so, the hardest decision you would make after that is what color to get. 😉
      If you need help finding a place, please let me know and I will help where I can.
      As far as water in the scuppers, I rarely have any come in, unless in moving water. I have had some water come in but I had over 350 lbs in the kayak. But with just me and some gear, at about 225 lbs, I don't have water come through scuppers.

    Thanks Donald. Looking at kayaks for fly fishing out here in the PNW. Do you think this could be transported on the roof rack of my Jeep Renegade?

    • @kayakflyfishingschool
      @kayakflyfishingschool  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I think you can load it by yourself into a Jeep rack. I load it into the second and third tier of my kayak trailer, the third tier is just over 6 feet of the ground. If you put the bow up first, the double handles in the stern make it easier to pick the kayak up and push onto your rack. The side handles make it a little easier to adjust from either side of the rack as well as assist in getting the kayak up into the rack.
      At 75 lbs, it isn't too heavy to load for most people into a rack because you are really only lifting one end at a time.

    I’m torn between the ultralight and the light tackle!!! I weigh abou 185 and was wondering what would be the best choice. I will be using it for finishing in a local bayou as well as using it as a recreational kayak floating the Caddo River in Arkansas.... Just wondering which would I would be happier with? Thanks for any feedback!

    • @kayakflyfishingschool
      @kayakflyfishingschool  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. The UL cuts through waves so you will get water over the bow in the river, but it is a good river boat.
      The LT rides on top of the waves and will help tig drier, it is also a really good rivet boat, but handles the lakes better and gives you more room for fishing equipment.
      The UL does not have much dry storage at all, just an 8" hatch. The LT has a huge hatch up front that you can use to store camping gear and just large items, and has more room in the tank well for storage.
      If you have the capability to transport the LT and your river access doesn't require you to carry down a steep bank for a lot of yards, I would recommend it. If you have to Portage your kayak a 40 yards or so up or down a steep embankment, the UL would be the better choice.

    Picking up my new Lite Tackle on Sunday. You mentioned car topping in the video which interests me as I will be doing the same. Typically would haul kayaks upside down, but the front hatch has me worried since it doesn’t latch. Have you experienced any issues? I messaged Crescent and their only advice was to remove the hatch cover, but that worries me that the kayak might catch too much air. Any insight? Thanks!

    • @kayakflyfishingschool
      @kayakflyfishingschool  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Payton,
      I have not had any issues with any of my Hatch covers coming off.
      I have only hauled them on the roof a couple times, but I have hauled them on the trailer for over a thousand miles round trip and no issues.
      I have heard of others having concerns with the hatch as well.
      As Crescent said, you can take it off and while it will be affected by the wind, it really isn't detrimental to do it that way. However, you can also leave the hatch on, make sure that bungee is tight, and you can take a small lashing strap and secure hatch lid to kayak between the bungee to make you feel better about the hatch movement. You can add this strap before you load it on the roof.
      Again, I have never had mine come off the kayak in the hundreds of trips, short and long, that I have made with them in the last year and a half.

    Just for you guys info, I own a Jackson coosa HD, and a lure 10 and 13.5, a watched so videos on this yak for a buddy looking to buy a fishing kayak to keep on his houseboat, I took him to outfitter that sales them, they had a salesman take us over to a small lake near by, my buddy liked it for sure, when it got time to close the deal my buddy said make me a deal on two and we want have to move mine back and forth, what a buddy😀 so I did the deal and they knocked off some $ for the two... to be honest, pretty happy ,been out 4 times now, stables ,fast, track great,
    Seats pretty good even though a little low, but I’m sure adds to the low center of gravity, neither of us are interested in standing,
    Had rather have two flush mount rod holders in the back, love the open deck and storage , doesn’t have a cup holder, but I like the deep groove in the deck center designed to take water to the scuppers, I like laying my bottle water in it,... only one problem, at the factory some how there is a miss alinement in scuppers , causing a leak, reached out to them today and they said they will make arrangements to replace the kayak, hopping to hear back n the morning, seem like str8 up folks, except for scupper problem I would highly recommend them😀

    • @kayakflyfishingschool
      @kayakflyfishingschool  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So happy that you and your buddy each got one...and with a deal to boot!!!!!
      The lower seat does add to the lower center of gravity and gives the paddler the most energy efficient position. I can understand the flush mount rod holders that have been almost standard on many kayaks since around early 2000, but the two mighty mounts allow you to add whatever rod holders you wish, for us since we use fly rods, the flush mounts are really of little use, but for conventional fishing, I can see the desire for sure. The drain area (scupper) can be used as a cup holder (holds cans, water bottles, and smaller tumblers, but not big ones...just let it sit down in the scupper hole, the scupper will still drain and your water bottle will not roll around the deck. :)
      Sorry to hear that you had some defects on your boat, I am certain that Crescent will get a replacement out to you soon, they have some top notch customer service and a very good warranty program. Please let me know when they get back with you and what they say, just so I know that you are taken care of, please. I find that this kayak is very stable for standing and fly fishing. The stability is very high and the width and open deck allows you to spread your feet to nearest to the edges. The open deck also allows for great line management and ease of casting. I do take the foot tests off and place in the cubby holes next to the seat which gives me even less snags on my fly line.
