      Last time I used a self service checkout was in M and S and because I had to as they had taken all their staffed checkouts away. I was ages on this dreadful self service system as first it would not scan a cauliflower so I had to wait ages for someone to come over and programme some sort code it, then I had to wait for a member of staff to come over again to 'clear a bottle of wine' for me, then I had to wait for yet another member of staff to come over and put a card in the machine to clear some sort of 'system error' ... it was a complete and absolute waste of my time. And the whole scene was just as you described ... watching staff in green Afghan jackets dashing from one terminal to another clearing down 'system errors' like some sort of demented madcap relay race.

Incidentally, Safeway had scan and go 25 years ago which I thought was the brilliant with a toddler in tow coz I was in and out. I totally agree with Diana & Kim. Whilst I am tech mad and use self-service tills in both supermarkets and restaurants, I do, on the odd occasion, like to have a chinwag with the person at the till from time to time. In fact, when I go to farmers' markets, I love having a chinwag with the stall holders, asking about their produce, as it's an education for you. I also agree with Diana; many times at the self-service checkout, something goes wrong, and you end up waiting several minutes for someone to come and help you, whereas at a manned till, they can sort it out instantly without you knowing. Human interaction is still an important part of the shopping experience, especially at markets. I think Rebecca is an absolute hypocrite, she says she has social anxiety, yet she's prepared to come onto public TV and have a heated debate. Lastly, for people with disabilities, self-service may be impossible, as Diana says.

    Don’t see what the issue is. I remember when self service came in. There’s all this talk about old people who can’t do it at the tills. It’s not that they cant it’s that they won’t!! I’m only 22 as well. It’s not like I grew up around it. I learned to use it so don’t see why others can’t?

    The problem is self-service is no good when you need to buy liquor, and no good if there's a problem with the pricing. No good if you have multiple items of the same type and can't be bothered to put them in the 'bagging area'/scale. That's where a clerk is needed.

    • @rossblack9559
      @rossblack9559 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then dont do self service if it is that much of an issue for you. Good grief. You would think you have to run 50 miles, it takes 2 minutes, maybe the issue is you not them. The same issue when scanning happens on normal tills aswell.

    I like the self-scan tills. I can scan as I am shopping, see the exact amount, remove items and most important put them into a bag as I am going around the shop. At the self-scan till, I zap the till with the barcode reader, pay and go. I don't even have to pack it all as I have done it going around the store. Sometimes it will require a staff member to re-zap items (security check) and I have to unpack and then repack, but it is rare enough. It can take me sixty seconds at the till. I don't have to wait around for half an hour while people discuss their week or what they saw on TV.

    • @CorporalFriendlyShark
      @CorporalFriendlyShark 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Spot on. I was in a shop the other day, they had 2 out of 8 tills on with queues stretching right down the store. If those other 6 tills were self-scan I would have quite happily done it myself to get done quicker.

    • @booth2710
      @booth2710 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      well if you sometimes have to get a staff member - which you probably have to hunt around the whole store to find, to rescan your stuff and then repack it all you may as well go through a manned service till in the first place.

    • @joyelmes7814
      @joyelmes7814 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a different thing entirely, you are referring to the gadget you take with you and scan as you go and just pay at the end. I think most people are referring to the actual self scan tills. Where you scan them at the end of your shop and have to do each item yourself. Your method would be beneficial to some people as long as there is no card problem. Having to scan items, some bulky and heavy through the actual till is really hard for some older or disabled people. We need the staffed tills, they can assist instantly if you need help to fill your bags or your card has trouble, which you see all the time.

    • @martinbobfrank
      @martinbobfrank 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joyelmes7814 I agree it is different from the normal self-service, which I used before using the self-scanners. Also, as you stated, you have to use a credit card which means not everyone can use them. I also use the self-service when I need change for work as the banks are now rubbish with giving you change.
      There should be enough manned tills to cater for all types of customers. However, I have worked for a brief four months as a till operator at ASDA in 2001. You do not get given time to talk to customers and be all helpful to them, in fact, it is the opposite. You are kept to targets on customers getting through the tills, and so a slow customer is biting into your performance ratings. Of course, most staff including myself always tried to be nice and accommodating to customers but you risk getting a trashing from your supervisor.
      Also, not all till operators have access to all services or functions on the till. So then the supervisor needs to be called, and that can take ages. As I am sure anyone who has been through a till will know about.

      @@martinbobfrank I agree with your comments. This video has attracted a majority of self-checkout haters by a highly biased presenter. My local supermarket seems to be operated by checkout staff that would rather not be there, but the answer is choice. Supermarkets should provide staffed checkout staff at all times.

    Why is this a drama?! I have seen it in CONTINENTAL EUROPE work JUST FINE! MOST OF THE BIG STORES HAVE BOTH...
    In Belgium/ NETHERLANDS/ FRANCE/ GERMANY, in the big stores, you go to the self service places and often it's cards only, which I don't mind, if it means me not standing in queue. Yes, people that never used it will have issues using it the first time, but I don't want want to wait 30 minutes with my 3 items infront of carts full of groceries... You can have BOTH! It doesn't mean people are being sacked, it's just quicker for people that have few items to go.

Especially the part where it says “An assistant will be with you shortly!”. They don’t stop talking. “Please take your receipt”. No, YOU take my receipt and stick it up your arse. So annoying. 😮
